19:40 the rule is to prevent hand passes from happening. What Reilly was meant to do is whack the puck down and then have him get possession to prevent players in the future from whacking the puck to teammates. The rule is good and the call is good

The rule is good, the way it's ALWAYS called is good. Even thee way it was called this time is good. Reilly stops the puck from going out of the zone and would have posession if Keller didn't challenge him for posession -> the refs wash-off. This is the way the situation is called seven times per game. Even in this situation. It wasn't the refs that turned the call over, it was the situation room.

The first five minutes of the Leafs-Coyotes game segment is hard to watch. 19:13 "What is Morgan Reilly meant to have done there?" play the puck himself with his stick, we see plays like that a dozen times a game, you can knock the puck down with your hand then play it yourself. What you cannot do, and should not be able to do is play the puck with your hand to your teammates. 20:40 If I bum rush a goalie knocking him, myself, and the puck into the net, and the goal horn goes off, fans will get excited. That does not mean the goal should stand. Fan excitement by itself is not how you should make game rules. If the Coyotes scored, but the goal was taken back because of a hand pass and Leafs' fans started cheering, would you change your mind on the rule, because now fans are excited? Rules should only be made with the fairness of the game in mind, not fan excitement. Calling the rule asinine because it led to an outcome you don't like is so stupid. The rule makes sense, the rule is fair, it was called correctly, end of story.

23:11 I fully support the hand pass rule. It's a game balancing issue. By forcing the players at the blue line to use their hand to bring the puck into their body and control it, you at least give the defense an opportunity to contest that puck or catch a breath since you can't ice the puck or flip it over the glass anymore. Watching a team make a 6 on 5 stand is one of the best things in a hockey game, but you have to feel like your team has a chance to escape that pressure.
@AlexandrMTL
@AlexandrMTL 2 жыл бұрын
Steve, Morgan Rielly is supposed to catch the puck and drop it to himself. We see this happen all the time in games. Once he has the puck on his stick, he's free to pass the puck to a teammate. That's the point of the rule, it's not stupid.
@michaelhiltz7846
@michaelhiltz7846 2 жыл бұрын
But when the person knocking the puck down gets engaged by an opposing player, like Reilly was, and therefore cannot play the puck. As Reilly couldn't because Keller was checking him. This rule does not account for that, and therefore the rule is in fact stupid

This is one Steve rant I'm not in total agreement with. I'm not saying the sequence of events of that particular goal aren't a bit ridiculous under the letter of the rule, but the point of the rule is to discourage players from using their hands. You're supposed to be playing with your stick. Obviously there are going to be times when it's called that aren't necessarily "in the spirit" of the rule, but it's much like the delay of game penalty for clearing it over the glass in that regard.
@sophiewang1025

I also don't understand how there can be stupid rules for hockey, a literal game, unless it makes it unnecessarily dangerous. Like, it's a game,.As long as the rules have no real consequences outside of the game, you can literally make up anything you want and it won't be "stupid".

For Steve’s argument about what Rielly is supposed to do with the puck, he could just play it himself? We see it all the time when a player knocks a puck out of the air to themselves and play goes on. He doesn’t have to either let Keller get possession OR let it go by. For sure there’s an argument about wether Keller touched the puck in the air or deserved a penalty, but acting like Rielly did everything he could is just wrong. If Rielly wins that board battle, or even touches the puck with his stick, it’s a fine play.
@joer8854

I agree with you there. I say if they are going to review, call the hand pass and the penalty. Call the calls that should have been made in the play period. Put the clock back to the point where the hand pass or high stick (whichever should be called first) should be called and go from there.

Lol, Leafs fans feel that the goal should have been allowed because it would have made them happy. The idea is that Reilly would play the puck himself prior to a teammate playing it, then it would have been a legal play. Reilly did have a chance to at the same moment Marner grabbed the puck but didn't as Marner was possessing the puck.
@MrReelio3
@MrReelio3 2 жыл бұрын
Am I the only one who's basically fine with the no goal call and the rule? Steve's argument of "what can Reilly do?" is silly. He can play it himself, win a battle with the opponent after they play it, or use his body to block the puck exit. It isn't a super power that gives you a free clear if you raise it off the ice, you literally just can't use your hand to pass it. I see guys jump and glove it down all the time legally. I also don't like Steve's argument for a more vague interpretation of the rule. He wants you to be able to hand pass it if you didn't mean to? Like he clearly said that he doesnt want cross ice one timers from a hand pass but he wants refs to somehow determine if someone meant to pass it or if they were just keeping a play alive? Isn't a simpler interpretation of the rule preferable? Otherwise we will have the situation room trying to magically determine the intentions behind playing the puck with the hand instead of just being able to make a call. That would be like saying "well yeah he kicked the puck into the net but clearly he was just trying to kick it into the corner to keep the play alive." It's kinda funny if this play was reversed and the Coyotes got a last minute goal taken off the board, this "controversy" wouldn't even get a 3 second aside in any podcast. I hate how the NHLs rules are only dumb and incomprehensible when they hurt the Leafs, it's just silly.

Jesse brings up a great point: who says Toronto is that team? It's easy to disconnect regular season success from playoff success and chalk it up to chaos or being cursed, but you're at that point where the playoff losses are no longer a small sample size. They're representing something there in the regular season too. The blueline doesn't get enough criticism for its lack of depth even WITH Muzzin. It's a collection of fading players who used to be very good and young players who aren't there yet. That's simply not a contending defense.

Lots of boarding calls are from far closer to the boards, which should reduce the reaction time for the player being boarded. But because Kane is a strong man, he gets punished 1 game. Steve, i have to disagree with you I think the rule makes complete sense. This rule is to prevent players from swiping the puck across the ice to their teammate. It gives that player an unfair advantage because the opposing team all of a sudden cannot do anything, if they try and get the puck from their hands it's a slash. Whenever I look at a bogus call and I critique the rulebook, I ask myself how would I change this rule to a) make it less ambiguous and b) take as much human error out of it as possible. So there's no interpretation or "I don't feel like calling this" effect that most penalties have or don't have. So I ask you 3, how would you change the rule?

You have a very good outlook to things! I think the best way to change the rule to make without contentions for the referee is to say "next player to touch the puck cannot be a teammate." That way, if the opponent takes control of the puck, all is good. But if it's a deliberate pass, it's called.

It’s so much easier to pass it with your hand to your teammate then it is to put it on your stick first, there for it’s a clear advantage for the team hand passing

20:08 - C'mon Steve. Rielly can touch the puck to nullify the hand pass. He doesn't have to give possession up.

Did you actually watch the play? Reilly didn't even get a chance to glove it to himself, Keller had his stick in his glove (penalty) and pressuring with the body to prevent Reilly's stick from possession. Seems like a lot people aren't getting Steve's point, the rule needs to take context into account if the refs are going to count on this type of review.

You commented about no Leafs hockey on Wednesday night -- it's Raptors night. I don't know if one team has first dibs or how they work that out, but that's maybe one reason Leafs aren't playing there tonight.

For the suspension thing, if you're a repeat offender the duration should be double. And the suspendable offenses should be categorized and carry flat game amounts. Stick infraction to the head is 2 games etc.

wont happen since heres the NHL way of thinking ''if we suspend player X for 3 games then fan Y wont buy a ticket to see him play''....and im convinced that they think like that all the time and not just for huge stars

The Leafs might have gotten wrecked by the salary cap... They signed those guys expecting it to go up in this 5 year window, instead the increase gets delayed and now all these guys are gonna be ready for big raises within the new cap haha

Steve with an all time worst take. The rule is cut and dry which is how rules should be. You can't review a hand pass and decide if there was an advantage or not. He gloved the puck and the leafs got possession next because of it.

Whenever I think about the Situation Room I imagine them all drawing straws, spinning the losers chair around 50 times, then having him throw a dart at a dartboard. If it lands evens, call stands; odds, overturned. Gives me solace when the reviews make 0 sense 😂

I honestly have no idea what game you guys watched. They dominated the first. Arizona did a good job of getting in the way of passes and shots, but they were getting destroyed in offensive zone possession. You really can't call that being bad. They were on even par until the final 10 minutes, which you could argue is bad considering the talent difference. But come on, being dominant for 30 minutes and even for 30 usually results in a win.

The glove pass argument might be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. The rule makes a lot of sense, a glove pass doesn't depend on how far the puck goes. If you play a puck with the glove and the next person to take possession is your team mate it's a hand pass, how is this hard to understand? Also why should they make calls to make it more entertaining? That's what happened last year in F1 at Abu Dhabi and I remember this podcast hating it, but when it's the Leafs that's what you want?
