High volume manual air pump to use with the emergency nuclear contamination air filter.

This is a manual air pump to provide air to your shelter in the event there is no power available for air flow. The design uses easily obtained items and is very easy to repair during operation. It is also easily modified so if you have better ideas that would be great. The check valves could easily be replaced with rubber balls of appropriate size.

I would probably go with a broom\painters handle instead of PVC since a broom handle would be more rigid, and probably cheaper. You could use a hole saw to cut the piston out of wood (2x6), and glue it to the broom handle. Also put a reducer on the handle end so piston remains straight in the PVC tube. Perhaps a couple of toilet flapper valves could be modified instead of plastic bottle tops so you can change the orientation of the pump, or just make flapper valves out of some flat neoprene rubber. The rubber should have enough spring tension to work in different orientations. Another option is to use a blower and add a hand crank with some pulleys to increase RPM from hand crank option. That said: Surplus Center (dt] com sells AC & 12VDC blowers. A 12VDC blower with a 120VAC to 12VDC power supply would provide the means to run it both on a household AC or a 12V Battery.

Yes there are several ways and designs. I wanted to make one out of what I had on hand. I put some small balls in for the valves and the work very well but I also wanted to use easily modified things around the house. I had several propane bottles and they can be empty or full they still work. The only bits that are not normal is the large pvc pipe and pvc connectors but they would rarely need replaces. Good ideas and thanks for the input. The more people share the better. 👍

Thanks for the video. I'm curious about air loss on your soda bottle valves. I was thinking you could add a line of silicone caulk for the valve to sit on to make a better seal. Just a thought.

Yes I was concerned but the bottles actually seal very well as long as you use ones with a smooth surface. I inflated a 55 gallon bag and pressurized it pretty tight and it did not leak down. You could also use rubber balls of the correct size but I wanted to try it with mostly stuff I could easily obtain and replace if needed. Also the valves just need to really hold briefly during the pumping and they did well. The pipeing connections I used had really good seating surfaces already so that help a lot. How is it connected to the outside air supply and the bottom of the bucket?

It actually goes on the discharge side of the blower motor shown in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5ekfGSmos2qjassi=srFF4I72f7azA0rK You could make to connection inside your shelter with what ever size piping you have. The bottom side would hook to the filter discharge and the upper outlet would go into your shelter area.

@@davidschwartz5127 you connect it to the discharge of the blower, not the bottom of the bucket. The blower is a squirrel cage type so there is very little differential press across the blower. So, you can just place it in your bunker area and take a suction off the blower discharge. Thanks for your input.

Would this design help scrub air of c02 in a small shelter?

It would displace the CO2 in the air by providing positive pressure source of makeup air to the shelter. CO2 scrubbing is much more complex. On a submarine the removal of CO2 is accomplished by a scrubber using Amine.
