do you not want the inlet and outlet switched so the filter stays indoors to keep out sound and then have the inlet on a hose so you can more discreetly route it? others will hear your filter and come wanting it

You could but that would place the filter inside closer to you and that would expose you to more radiation from the filter. There are many ways to position the filter you just have to think through the consequences. Thanks for the comment.

Most homes will not be near enough to be damaged during a nuclear explosion. The explosions, although destructive in the immediate location, do not affect that large of an area. Maybe a 10 mile radius. You are much more likely to be affected by the fallout that can cover hundreds of square miles. But if you are unlucky enough to be experience the actual blast that could topple your house, you are probably toast no matter what you do.

What strikes me about this is that radioactive particles are drawn into the body of the filter plenum which is inside the shelter... And that plastic isn't going to be thick enough to shield out beta particles or gamma emitters, even if it will shield alpha. I would definitely want that in a ventilation compartment outside of my shelter living space. This is more or less how CBRN systems work on warships where the filtration units are in a dedicated filter compartment which opens to the upper deck and the intake screens, but which is outside of the main citadel. That way any maintenance work or filter changes doesn't result in radioactive dust inside the inhabited areas. Have to say that I think this could be knocked up for a few hundred dollars at most using your carbon filter design, a couple of soakwells and a 12 volt blower. Thanks for the insight.

The placement is dependent on your shelter design. It would be best outside. Or in a space inside like a garage that would protect it from the elements. You could also shield it if you wanted it inside your shelter area. Thanks for the comment 👍

Using a battery setup is fine as long and you use a potentiometer. This will regulate the amperage with ohms. 27v with high ampacity will cause particles of metal to fly off the rod. Sounds good. One thing is make sure your flow rate is low, just enough that would keep the area you would be in to about 0.25 inches of water above outside air pressure. The contaminated air needs to be in contact with the activated charcoal for at least 1/4 of a second to remove the contamination. So, too high of flow rate would not allow the contact time needed. Thanks for the comment.

Preparing for a nuclear incident is undoubtedly challenging, and I commend your efforts as they significantly benefit us. I would like to inquire whether there is a need to replace the activated charcoal in the filter after a certain period. How long can we expect it to remain effective? Your response will be greatly appreciated.

I would think this type of filter would be good for about a month. We have these type filters in nuclear plants and they are not all that big and are normally good for 30 days. Of course that depends on the air quality and contamination levels. If it is extremely dusty the dust alone could plug the filter. So having some sort of pre filter would be very useful to extend the life of the filter. Also using it at low flow rates will extend the life but you need to normally have a slight negative to neutral pressure in the shelter.

QUESTION: Hepa filter to catch larger particles. Then activated charcoal filter to catch tiny radioactive particles. Then another Hepa filter?? Finally the air blower pulling the air through the piping, filters, and into the bunker for a Pressure Positive environment? I’ve read the bunker doesn’t need to be air tight as long as it’s pressure positive. That way air is constantly pushing out and nothing can float in. QUESTION: Also to note the charcoal filter mechanism needs to be in the bunker otherwise it will get continually irradiated by fallout??
@edwardjackson9791
@edwardjackson9791 4 ай бұрын
You can use HEPA on both sides of the activated charcoal but the inlet can just be regular HVAC type filter to catch the big particles before entering the activated charcoal bed so it won’t plug. The charcoal does some mechanical filtering but its primary purpose is the trap and hold up the radioactive gases that can’t be filtered. This is called adsorption. The radioactive gas can then decay to radioactive particles which can then be filtered out by the exhaust HEPA Filter. Yes a positive pressure is best about 0.25 inches of water pressure is enough. The filter would best be outside the bunker but somewhat protected(i.e. in a garage as long as it it not close to your shelter). The filter will become more and more contaminated but this type filter would probably last at least a month and by then it would likely be safe to exit the shelter. And during that time the filter would also be decaying as time goes by.

@edwardjackson9791
@edwardjackson9791 5 ай бұрын
Every filter will be radioactive if used to filter radioactive fallout. This type of filter will probably not need to be changed out for a single event. It should last for several weeks or months. Yes you need to have it far away, like outside or very well shielded if inside. If the filter adsorbs radioactive contamination that could give you a lethal dose when changing it you probably have already received a lethal dose from the event. You must remember the filter is decaying just like the radioactive fallout. It is a fairly rapid decay. So the filter will last several weeks and changing will be unlikely and if it is needed a lethal dose is not a real possibility again unless the contamination radiation levels were so high that you would have already received a lethal dose from fallout itself. Thanks for the comment.

Thank you for the comment. If you look at my channel I build a simple air pump with 6 inch pvc drain pipe which can be used basically as a bellows. The water I talk about is a measure of differential pressure normally used on HVAC systems. If you have a filter for example and measure the pressure difference from one side to the other it is in inches of water. So if you take a clear piece of tubing and make a loop (like a p trap under a sink) in it and connect it to the inlet and outlet of the filter then water when air flow goes through the filter the water in the tube will displace based on the inlet and outlet pressure. If you measure the difference in the water level with a ruler it gives you the inch of water. There are plenty of KZbin videos. Here is one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/epWuaZprjcSLd9Esi=LMQJuRvbp7HkEekM

Good idea. The shape of the bucket or container really doesn’t matter as long as you don’t have leakage past the filter media. The only requirement for flow rate is it provides enough makeup to supply your shelter with makeup O2. The air flow should be in contact with the activated charcoal flow >0.25 seconds. So slow flow is better if it provides the correct amount of makeup O2. I bought a CO2 monitor to check the air in our area.

The same for colloidal silver: 4 batteries/9v making a yellow ish -gold colloid solution (wich is best colour in term of perf ppm) in 30-40 min. Must boil the water first then immediately use it for the process, If u leave it for 1 h it become dark gold highly concentrated. Some people recommend when u drink it to add some normal water( not tap water!) for better taste or if u have stomach issues. Another idea is to add a pinch of hymalaya/sea salt for a proper absorption in tissues and avoidind depleting your body of imp minerals since we use distilled water for the colloid. Distilled is preferable than de-ionized water , if use deionized always boil the water anyway due to possible bacteria/viruses contamination. ( check online resources). And of course store colloids in a dark bottle/jar and in a cupboard or fridge. 😊👍

That is difficult to say. It depends on how air tight the space is and number of people. The key is to provided filtered makeup oxygen to your space as long as you provide a slight over pressure (.025 in water) with most air flow though the filter it will provide protection. The filter elements used at nuclear plants are not much bigger that a couple of trash cans and provide air filtering of around 50,000 ft2. So it mostly depends on how much makeup air you need not the volume. This filter is not perfect but it will provide better air quality that just a furnace type filter. Where would you position you device to filter the air?
@edwardjackson9791

Best place is outside under cover but inside like a garage would work. You just have to realize it will be drawing contamination inside the area you put it. Also away from people. The filter itself may become radioactive as it filters and present a radiation hazard. Thanks for the question 👍

Thanks for the video. I just finished replacing the pump in my CS 310. You can make a simple puller out of a long (2.5" or more) 5mm .8 bolt, a nut, a washer and some spacers or tube of the right ID and OD. The pump removal was super easy using the puller. No prying or banging, just turn the nut and out it comes. Maybe I can do a simple, quick video and show how to make a puller.

That be great. My problem was the original pump had no treads so I had to push it from the top. Wasn’t hard but the replacement pump had threads and it would have made it much easier. Thanks for the comment 👍

I’m not sure what you’re saying there? Are you saying you can’t hear me mumbling or because I’m mumbling you can understand, or can’t hear me because someone is mumbling too loud? Appreciate the feedback but not sure what to fix.

I added colloidal copper to my water. You would expect the ppm to rise with the additional copper particles. It dropped by 30 ppm !!. How is this possible ??. Did the copper kill off more impurities then its own volume ??.
@edwardjackson9791

I know it is hard to measure the colloidal content. It is not as straightforward as measuring the change based on like adding salt or other substances. I looked on the internet and it was different with colloidal copper and silver. I never did get a good answer. I make the copper and get a bluish green water color and use it for disinfecting surfaces and like my hands. But I don’t take it internally. The silver is a bit more tricky because it starts out straw colored but turns darker and gray over time. That makes since because that is the process in photography. The silver in the film when exposed to light turn darker the more light it receives. Sorry I can’t be more help but unless you have sensitive enough and the correct kind of equipment you may just have to estimate based on color.thanks for the question and if you find an answer please post it for me and others.

it's because TDS meters aren't meant to measure colloidal contents. they are calibrated for 100ppm and higher. they round up and down by 2ppm, for example a 1ppm solution could show as 0ppm

Shouldn't it go through the filter before it goes through the carbon? Shouldn't the order be: 1) Batting 2) Filter 3) Carbon 4) Small amount of Batting (in case some carbon gets loose) Also, do you know if this is enough carbon to actually stop anything? And if so, how long do you suspect this amount of carbon would be good for? I know the professional systems use like 30+ pounds of carbon. However, they are also designed to last for months which seems a bit overkill.

The batting (roughing filter) on the inlet is good and helpful to prevent plugging. The reason for the carbon first is it captures radioactive gases and holds them up for a long period. The gases pass through any filter. The carbon traps the gases and allows them to decay into fission particles which the filter can then remove. As for amount of carbon, the beds at nuclear plants for the control room were 2 inches deep beds. But the important part is the air flow through the activated charcoal should allow at least .25 seconds of contact time so you want a flow rate that allows that contact time. In reality you probably don’t not a lot of air flow. I have a CO2 monitor to make sure there is enough makeup flow. The activated charcoal will probably last a very long time so the limiting part will likely be the HEPA filter. But this system would likely be good for over a month and if you are just using for makeup flow it would likely last much longer. For the cost you could make spares that you could exchange if needed. Hope this helps. Thanks for the questions.

It still working great. You get a small amount of vapor but it is drastically reduced. I did change the connection to the pump. I took the cap that came with the pump and after modifying it to fit on the PVC pipe I JB welded it to the PVC pipe so it would fit better to the pump. The fitting on the pump is some really odd Chinesium size.
