Whatever you review or demonstrate, you always do such a thorough job with it, and this little bushcraft fire kit is no exception. As you were pulling things out of that pouch, your enthusiasm reminded me of a small child who was excited to find a prize in the bottom of his Cracker Jacks. Well done, my friend!

Nice kit, but it's a bit "ferro rod heavy", IMO. My kit has one medium ferro rod, one butane lighter, some fatwood, a bag of Birch bark, an Altoids can Flint and steel kit, a lens and an Altoids tin with a couple tea bags and sugar packets. Various means of starting a fire and some refreshment! 😁
@HighCarbonSteelLove7 жыл бұрын
Very true! This kit is filled more with stuff I like playing around with, as opposed to a "true" fire kit. My fire kit pretty much consists of a ferro and and/or a flint & steel altoids tin..haha. Sounds like you have an excellent kit there! Thank you for taking the time to stop by! -Dave

Playing around with stuff is fun for sure; I prefer F&S myself. Thanks for the compliment on my kit. I keep it in a US military canteen pouch. Has a small pocket on each side. One for my F&S kit, one for my tea set.

Great setup. Love how you have flame/spark and heat methods for starting fire. 1:27 :D that's a decent size lens. I can't be the first person to remind folks that a diminutive Opinel #6 has a spine that makes the perfect ferro rod striker but is also a multi-tasker because it is a great blade for fine and detail work in the field. Further, that affordable little knife would easily fit in your kit pouch. I love Opinel!

I like a pouch for a fire kit, though I think carrying that many items is a mistake. Yes, it's fun playing with and learning different ways of starting a fire, but I've found very few master other ways unless they leave their primary method at home, and take, at MOST, only two types of fire starter, neither of which they're very good at. You don't learn to be really good with a fire steel by carrying and using a monster ferro rod. You learn by carrying a small ferro rod, and making it work. That is probably the best ferro rod out there, which is why it's the worst choice to carry. The largest ferro rod I ever carry is a Light My Fire Swiss 2.0. I also carry one that probably no more than a fifth that size. Carrying a monster ferro rod is like carrying a blowtorch to learn how to start fires with matches. Sharpening the spine of a knife is extremely popular on KZbin, but a pretty strange practice, if you think you'll ever need that knife for a big carving project, or for emergency use in the wilderness. There are many things you may have to do that call for placing your thumb, or even your index finger, on the back of the blade, right where you have that sharp edge. A sharp spine can let you do several things, but it takes away from a knife's real purpose, which is cutting all sorts of things, under all sorts of conditions, and it simply is never, ever necessary. There are innumerable items that will do the same tasks as well, or better, than a sharp spine, and do other things besides, without interfering with the functionality of the other side of the knife where the edge is. I also don't understand why anyone carries char cloth. I don't know who first thought this was how the pioneers and long hunters and general woodsmen did things, but it isn't. Char cloth was very, very occasionally used at home, but never in the wilderness. No one would waste cotton by burning it, and even cotton scraps were valuable. More, there is no need at all to use char cloth to start a flint and steel fire easily. The woods is full on natural char items, and also contains items you can use to start a flint and steel fire without charring anything, Char cloth is a good thing for teaching people how to build their first flint and steel fires, but after that it should be abandoned for things that make natural char, and things that will create a good ember without being charred. Otherwise, they won't ever master flint and steel fire, and if they desperately need to start one without char cloth, they won't know how. Of course, frontiersmen seldom used a handheld striker for flint and steel fires, either, though it's a good idea to learn how to do so. Frontiersmen used the lock on their muzzle loading rifles as both flint and steel. It was a heck of a lot easier and more convenient than a striker and separate flint you had to hold. Some even carried a very small pistol for just this purpose, and a few used a very small pistol with a sawed off barrel.

Say Heah aAgain, I first saw Dave from Bushcraft on Fire when he first introduced the Grizzly FireStarter It's a large rod of Magnisium with a ferrosium rod attached into it with a wooden handle and I got the meral ine also which is smaller. Anyhow Dave ignited it in water and it burns at a very high intensity. I carry one with me when ever I go into the bush, Oh their life time guaranteed so I don't think I'll ever run out. By the way that Condor is excactly what I was looking for so I can attach it to my O.K.C. It's great to have redundancy in fire making. However, you have enough weight in ferro rod to choke a horse. I suppose if you're not worried about weight in your bugout bag it's fine. But honestly, overkill sir. I did enjoy your video, thanks for sharing.
@waredbear9 жыл бұрын
Great Kit!!! You have seen the videos on my fire kits. My only suggestion would be to have more options to catch your spark like magnesium dust. I'm working on a video showing how I put the dust into straws. These work great at keeping the dust dry and ready for a fire. I also put duct tape around the pill bottle to help hold the Vaseline and Magnesium dust together. I also include a small piece of heavy aluminum to make a bowl to hold the material and to hold small tender above the fire....not on it. It catches a fire better and doesn't smother the small flame. Thanks for sharing Dave.

You should never have trouble getting a fire started with your kit! Great kit. I have many of the same items as you do, though not as many fero rods. You're right about how nice a large fero rod is, as you can actually shower marginal tinder until it is dry enough to ignite. A lot of the items I carry are more for fun than anything, as all I really need is: Large fero rod, cotton balls with Vaseline, and a piece of Fatwood in case the cotton balls get damp/wet, and a knife of course. One thing though, I have tried keeping fatwood shavings ready, but after a while they dry up. Now, I don't shave them until I am ready to use them. I have even put them in a plastic bag but they still dry up on me. Maybe the bag had a pin hole it it. Anyway, thanks for showing so many options for fire, and your Condor case is perfect.
@HighCarbonSteelLove8 жыл бұрын
+csh 62 You are exactly right! I rarely carry this full kit into the woods, as most of it is just for fun to play around with. I do, however, always have my ferro rod and flint & steel items. I don't carry fatwood with me because there is so much pine here in the northeast, that if I need some, it's very easy to obtain. The shavings are just being saved for fun, as I like to test out manually sharpened spines on the fatwood I have here at home..haha! I love the Condor pouches! Thank you for watching and leaving your awesome comment, my friend! -Dave

I had a real bad experience so this is a F.Y.I. for some. When I got my Bokor Plus Black Vox Rold the Sheath fit the knife so loose that I couldn't tighten it..When I was ready to go on a few day bush craft trip with some friends I was going to take a set I just put together. I took my larger Himalayan Imports M-43 with the Black Buffalo Horn Handle my smaller one has a White Handle. anyhow, I was going to team it up with my Bokor Magnum Series Vox Collection 2000 a beautuful design very Retro style of knife, for the finer stuff I decided to use my Myerchin Pocket Knife with the Marlin Spike which I use to untangle paracord. .The knife is used my mariners in open water so the lock-up is very strong and the modified Warrencliff blade matched this set. I was going to take my Rold as a back up so I took it to my room, I decided not to take it because I called Bokor and tgey were sending me a new sheath. I put the knife on the chair in my room. In tge morning I went to put it away and start getting ready for the trip, The knife was dangerously loose and flew out of the sheath and straight into my foot Puch, Shades of Bakus I said it bled like crazy so right away I took a towel and pressed on the deep wound. I made it to the easy chair I'm the other room leaving puddles of blood trails, I mean it bled. Finally I stopped the bleeding but everytime I put pressure just to walk, it would start pouring again, I kept the leg elevated and finally after three days it finally stopped bleeding. I have a little medical training so I know I didn't hit a artery so that was good. If blood pulsates Oh Oh. I got a new sheath but now it's for a cross draw carry because of the goofy angle. But here's what I did. I took that loose sheath and took the nylon frog belt loop and put it on, The sheath is a good quality kydex and now with the snap on my new belt loop the knife isn't going to fall out. Bokor should of done this first of all..Now I have a very good sheath that holds my Bokor Plus Vox Rold safely and it's a good sheath now.

Can you imagine a incidence like that in the wild. Yikes, that would sceeeeeer me. Yeah, my tetanus shot was up to date and I nursed myself by keeping it clean and very little walking, I used Papillon Bandages (butterfly) and if I have to say I did a good job I did. The scare is small and healed 100%

Say Heah Dave, I'm pretty happy with my fire kit, It's a little smaller than yours, Being a Cigar smoker, I have some pretty good Tourch Lighters, I also like using Magnesium, Mine is the Grizzly brand, It will light on water. I also like having real fine Steel Wool for thunder, Have you ever tried it, It takes a spark great but becareful it burns hot, But for emergency only a couple of road flares you prolly would find on the bottom somewhere in my Haversack or Backpack, Yes I use Ferro Rods too. I almost feel embarrassed and elated both at the same time, Infact just yesterday I found out how good serrated knives make feathers, By clicking the wrong picture, I ended buying a Benchmade 156 CSK in D2 years ago, Even though I like the way it's made alot better than my CarbonV S. R. K. but the most I do with it was fondle it every once in awhile since it's a serrated combo version. That's until yesterday, Come this weekend it won't be virgin anymore, I plan teaming it with my new Husqvarna All Purpose Forest Axe adding one of my Bacho Laplander to the trio. One of the emergencies I experience is running out of day light because mist of my equipment I trust, So knowing my Road flares are in my pack, No problemo. If you know what I mean jellybean, Sure do kangaroo or tennishoe. Anyhow, Your absolutely right, We have to practice our fire making techniques, No doubt. But all I have to do is light my stogie and I can make fire with a birds nest, But my Ferro Rod my Grossly Magnesium Rod Oh it has a small ferro rod built in, I just scrap a small pile throw some sparks on it and like I said, It burns very hot. So does the very fine Steel Wool, Job well done, Yeah Condor is a good brand, It's a Maxpedition Product, Not the same as the knife company, I have a backpack by them.

Nice Kit, I want to get me one those Big GobSparks ... this how I set mine up ... It is in 2 parts a Small Altoid can with fatwood, Charcloth and Fresno lens in belt Pouch with a Bic & Fero Rod attached to its sides and the second part is a Round leather Pouch in my MSR pot that has Another Fero rod w/Striker, Flint & steel, Magnifying Glass in a leather pouch in a Altoids can, Bic Lighter, Container of Storm proof Matches , and a Baggy of Fire materials (Fatwood, Surefire, Candle and Etc) Don't like all my Fire stuff in One spot incase something happened I have some with me. Also on Beltis One of my Knives and Pocket knife in Pocket, both can Strike Rod. ... Thinking of Adding a Small Rasp to Make Fast Tinder Shavings, Seen one that Folded into its Handle before.

Try putting your fire kit into a dollar store plastic soap dish container. No weight, water and moisture resistant, and only carries what is truly important for making a fire vs carrying so many different items, and a heavy industrial weight pouch.
@HighCarbonSteelLove9 жыл бұрын
+John Lord My main fire "kit" is the monster ferro rod and my knife. Or a piece of chert and my knife. Everything else is just for fun to play around with. Not really worried about moisture, as the ferro rods will hold up against the wetness. Thank you for watching, my friend!

The pouch is not heavy, and is far easier to carry that a plastic soap dish container. I do use plastic soap dish containers, but only for throwing in my pack, which is NOT where your fire kit should be. Molly and hook and loop allow you to carry your fire kit outside your pack, and even on your belt, which is where your fire kit should actually be. I do agree about carrying so many items. Doing so is unnecessary, and a poor way to learn how to be a good woodsman. But a pouch you can easily carry outside a pack or pocket is the best idea possible. It gives you options you don't have with a soap dish, and options matter.

Dave remember when you said you liked a thinner blade but you wish you had your old Mora 510, it was that video. You reminded me of one of my Fav's. It's a Solengin German Weilmannsheil knife, I always thought it was a 4" blade until I measured it, it's more like a 3 3/4"+. Anyhow it's a slender elliptical shape blade like the Canadian Boat Knife similar in style with India Stag Sanbar Handle it appears to be a full convex but a 2/3rd scandi or saber like grind but it seems to be convexed, it's sort of hard to explain..Anyhow I bought two from the same selle on e-bay. The other knife is similar in size and a slender clip point that I used as my Bird and Trout Knife the one side for a right hander has been ground for upward cuts and is just in the right spot for me, it was done by the maker. But it's all integral the bolster and the pommel is one piece of stainless steel..I remember not paying alot for them although at the time it seemed to be alot for the $65.00 I paid for them apiece. I bet the seller wished he never sold them, My Slender Elliptical Knife is a Carbon and it's beautiful. Anyhow I use it seasonal because I would hate to loose it in the snow then I would have to mark the area and wait until the snow melted. I wish I could if bought more of them. It's a awesome carver the point is a cute and carving curves is no job for it, I could make a netting needed LE although I don't know how to use one and I started to carry it as my neck knife. I wish it doesn't grow legs and walks away either. I love my Skookum Bush Tool which mine is made in a 3V, but this little knife is so fine that I love to use it as my neck knife. It is in the top of my Fav's. I wish I could find more info on it but all I know it's a good one and it works wood real good for a small knife and easy to neck carry, Ciao.
