@jshaw15037 жыл бұрын
tranq45 I believe it's the velocity that matters. 12 gauge slug travels waaaay slower than a 5.56. Slug is prob under 1,200 fps where as a 5.56 is closer to 3,000.
@tranq457 жыл бұрын
J Shaw : In general, yes. That said, past a certain energy level, armor stops having any meaningful ability to resist. Clearly, shotgun slugs don't rise to that level of force.

I used to test armor and Lexan windows back in the mid 70s. My experience was pretty much the same as my Dad's during WW2 regarding the Plexiglas armor in his bomber's windows. 'It stopped the first round. Usually it stopped the 2 & 3rd rounds too. But after that they just walked right on in.' Yeah Kevlar and Lexan were the same way pretty much. Chilled Aluminum was a little better, but it had limits too. One thing I learned was if they said II or IIA or III, etc., that's exactly what they meant. I watched 20 ga. slugs pass right on through early IIA stuff. BRI 12 ga DS AP slugs would walk through the engine block of a Chevy 350 and do the same to most vests. An inch and a half of Lexan could stop some Com Block AK rounds, and maybe one or two Arcane loads from a sub gun, but the rest would just walk on through. An acid test was an M-1 Garand with the old black tip AP ammo. But 5 or 6 8 round clips of that would shred a lot of 'bullet proof' limos. So I m not even watching yet, but I have full expectation of the M-1 carbine, (if you are using FMJ) the 12 ga slugs (especially if you have discarding sabot copper slugs) and the 223 just walking on through pistol rated armor. We shall see. Okay, I am impressed. I expected the M1 carbine to do better. The lead 12 gauge slug I expected to go through too. I still think if it had been a DS copper slug it would have zipped through. We knew the .223 went through because the shield didn't move, which meant no energy transfer because it just zipped through. What I do find most impressive is hits usually damage the surrounding laminate, so I kind of expected the 12 ga buckshot to walk through the weakened area, but it didn't. That is some decent armor..

People who are into the 10mm have seen it defeat IIIA on more than one occasion with the right loads (Xtreme Pen. or Def.). The bushmaster load was a ballistic tip. It had literally no chance of defeating any decent armor. He was choosing loads that were the least likely to make it through. He is a 10mm fan as well, he knew that a FBI load JHP was going nowhere fast with even IIA armor yet alone IIIA. Until he used AP ammo lol anyone, even Tim, could have told you none of those rounds were going through.
@watcher01a177 жыл бұрын

Because everyone “knows” 45 is much more powerful than the puny 9mm. Problem is it’s velocity and bullet construction that actually defeats armor. Which is why armor that can stop a 1oz slug will often be penetrated by a 62grn 556.

People don't yet realize how much of a game changer a shield is. Before you could be the greatest melee fighter in the world, but if you can't hit your target even after 10 years of training you would be useless in the battlefield because you would just waste ammo at a distance, and if you tried to use your skills in melee you'd just get shot. But now with shields someone who is built for melee can actually play a roll in warfare.

I play airsoft and I have a 13 pound metal shield and I recommend if you use one keep a sling on you when using the shield so if you need a rest you can just drop it

Now our Police know what they need to use to defend against various threats. I have a large LEO and Military following on the channel and this is good info for them.

A police officer should understand the threat they are facing and react accordingly. If its not rifle rated, they should be seeking hard cover shield or not when they encounter someone with a rifle. Also if you don't remove the threat and use the shield properly, even a .22LR is plenty deadly given the exposed legs. Its a tool, not a magic wand.

Niggia's glawk .40s aren't gonna do shit against that shield.

i was thinking about that cause with body armor you are taking a 50 50 risk i am glad transparent armor was invented glad atleast the face has some kinda armor and not just the body i was like wow we really need face armor with actual body armor there are so many ways to defeat it

I was impressed with the test but all the ammo you used was standard, bad guys now have access to hot load ammo and AP rounds, like to see the test done with AP ammo, I own and use SIG SAUER 226 Tacops pistol and 229 Legion all in 9mm calibre's all rounds are AP and hot loads, if I wear bullet proof vest I wear two or none at all, shields are designed to give a sense of protection but not guaranteed as kinetic energy from the round can cause injury from shock wave but again you've made a great review.

Would be fun to see how it held up to the various .17s. Even the hotter rimfire stuff, .17HMR and .17WSM, I think would do well based on my own observations. I have no doubt that the .17 centerfire loads would punch right on through.

Perhaps try .357 mag +P with an extreme penetrator bullet through a Henry lever action rifle. That might make it through. .40 S&W bullets or bigger are too big in diameter even if they are heavier for optimal penetration. You need a good ballistic coefficient coupled with velocity and minimal projectile deformation upon contact.

this was interesting to watch. I've been curious to see a test of this type of equipment since I saw the photo of the shield the French team went into the Bataclan with.
