I think since INEOS bought the team and even more so since Dave Brailsford isn't there anymore that things are falling apart. They let go riders that didn't quite make it in terms of being GC contenders anymore, like Sivakov and Geoghan-Hart, who would have made great support riders, even contenders for victory in week long races, well even team leaders for Grand Tours as things currently look. Now Jhonaton Narvaez is going as well, one of the few bright points of this season. They're letting top talent go and just don't have the depth to challenge anymore, even though they ride like they do, this is a problem, and I put it down to bad management. I'm guessing Bernal is on good money because he signed a long contract before his horrific crash, and this combined with Froome's similar, almost career ending, near life ending, crash, this must have set back INEOS a long way and they've never really recovered. With Jim Radcliffe now being more interested in Manchester United than pro cycling I think he's let his eye off the ball and has decisions are being left, right, and centre now. I don't think Carlos Rodriguez is anything more than a top 5 GT finisher, which don't get me wrong is still darn good, and G Thomas can't go on forever, and I think is winding down his career now, so INEOS have a problem. Finally, have you ever been on a pro team the management just said to you to decide amongst yourselves? If this is right then it's just an abdication of duty by the team's management. I don't know what is going on, but the team would be very foolish to let Pidcock go. Might never be a GT challenger, but he's probably the most talented rider on the team. He must have had an agreement with the team to have time to prepare for defending his Olympic mountain bike gold medal, which even though we're not fans of that sport he won that race in amazing style, and now that's done he wants to be developed more into a road cyclist winner, I don't blame him for that. I know we don't get to see or hear everything that goes on behind the scenes but I just don't believe that he's the one creating all the trouble. Maybe INEOS want him gone to free up budget to invest elsewhere, maybe it's just that in a poorly performing team tensions rise to the surface, but whatever is going on management need to get a grip on things, I didn't see anything in Il Lombadia to justify him not being there, even if he was just himself I think he'd have done better than the team did as a group. 🦋🦋🦋

Tom doesn't make it easy on himself, there are a ton of multi disciple riders in the peloton, track, cyclocross, mountain bike, gravel?..., but I think it is generally understood that when you not leader(s) you back the team and ride 100% for the win for the team. I have seen every top rider on the front riding for team mates, Remco loves to get on the front and tear off every ones legs in a sprint lead out every top rider works for the team, I don't recall a single time I have seen Tom on the front giving everything for the team making that sacrifice.

If its true, then the team is not run by Dempster, which is a mistake. The performance of the team is the manager's accountability. The buck stops at him. That is what it should be...The manager will be able to perform better if he is given space and freedom...which will breed creativity and competency...of course within certain agreed rules, understanding and guided by the team's aspirations. @@ChrisHornerCycling If you look at it from his perspective that the Olympic gold medal (he won) was his main 2024 objective surely it makes sense in a v busy season with so many different events compressed into his summer? Completely agree that Ineos have lost their way. Pidcock aside they have too much budget tied up in past performers (who are waning and/or who have been recovering from accident/injury) to retain sufficient depth in their squad to compete anywhere close to how they used to. In the 2024 grand tours their wagon rolled along often appearing near the front and in the mix for much of each stage but rarely a threat once the real punches were thrown. If you look at the majority of the recent grand tour wins with squads fielding their strongest teams then it takes the combination of an exceptional rider together with real depth in the team composition to come out on top. At no point - on the starting line - in 2024 and arguably earlier have Ineos looked to have this combination and so they lined up as “also rans” effectively just chasing stage wins.

Ineos as an organization has massive problems. On top of all the rider discontent, you have other staff leaving to become DS for other teams. Pidcock certainly has the talent to be a top tier rider if he were to fully focus on the road (which I believe is legit given that Tom accomplished his goal of being a double Olympic gold medalist). However, the question for Tom is whether he himself actually wants to stay with Ineos. There’s a legitimate case for him to leave, even if it is for a small team.

To be realistic: I regard Pidcock as a rider who should focus on Ardenne Classics and stage wins at Grand Tours. Maybe a mountain jersey as well. If that leads up to a top ten finish in GC, it will be a nice byproduct. And now Pidcock has to make the decision to focus completely on road racing and the Ineos Management has to make a decision whether they want to pay him for that or not and if how much.

If the team has good athletes and the results are not there...the fault is to be and is on the management. We saw it last year when management is weak and starts to play intrigues between riders. It made explode the team during race...even PR after the big dispute after Angliru (even big boss flew in to play a fireman) was better and showed only one black sheep, but the team was damaged and does not perform well this year...the only solution is to change the faulty directors. In high performance there is no democracy, all decisions should be founded on the facts. If Tom was send out just before race, the director should have very good argument other than his power. I think that Tom will go out...he can not be in a team run by a band of seriously bad knuckleheads.

0 seconds ago Doing other disciplines is perfectly fine, but you can't expect to get paid as a top road rider if you aren't committing to the road and the road team. Look at WVA he is paid big and may jump off-road, but he is certainly committed to the road results for himself and the team.
@Andy_ATB
@Andy_ATB 2 күн бұрын
Why shouldn't he get paid big money? Roadie ignorance at its best. Ineos knew he raced different disciplines when they signed him - and paid him accordingly. He's paid to win races - whether that's road, off road doesn't matter. And he's delivered wins across 3 disciplines.....
@mikebaxter818

@@Andy_ATB gotta agree here. Everybody knows TP's main interest - and talent, right now - is winning big MTB races. In addition to that he's a viral youtube star, at least while he's winning. Is that worth nothing to Ineos? They must have paid him the big contract on the understanding he'd come good on the road as well. Well, he has delivered on the road in the classics. So we come down to 2 things. One, his performance at GT's, which is not all that promising. And two, how he fits into the team. He's a great guy to us the cycling public, got charisma and a certain genius. But will he give it all for the team?... no, he gives every impression of not doing what he's told, or asked to do. Since all the other guys are ultimate team players, all y,ear long, they probably wish he wasn't around. You hear the other riders say he's a super talent, that's good but not so good as a super teammate. So upper management sent a strong final message and his removal from Lombardia was that message. Trouble is, they could have delivered the message with more finesse. This way, it's like they'll be lucky to get any loyalty from TP. You don't get loyalty by humiliating somebody and jerking them around. So what's left?... I think they will cut him loose or further starve him of opportunity. I hope I'm wrong, it would be great to see a happy productive TP with Ineos next year. But I can't see it, not now.

What GT said about the democracy style management of the team might be the key factor. You have highly tuned athletes all considering themselves to be something, many times something more than they truly are, but high calibre all the same. Then you ask for a vote on how to ride a race or a training ride?! You can't have this free-for-all approach because when the results are poor, fingers get pointed in every direction. You can imagine people leaving the team bus before a race, mumbling under their breathe as opposed to "Okay, I know what I have to do."

Seems like there may be a financial aspect to both sides of this little spat. If INEOS is trying to sell the team and to do so they need to dump their more expensive riders, maybe they're purposely sabotaging Pidcock to try and get him to jump ship. On the other side, Pidcock may need to say he's all in and has been all in all along to make himself more attractive in the marketplace. That would be a poor strategy by INEOS, IMO, but maybe they feel they made a mistake with Pidcock and they're trying to fix it.

Pidcock is a bit of an odd dude, I think he’s delusional if he thinks he can compete with the best GC riders (the top 4), maybe he can hang with second tier GC riders like Mas, Ben O’Connor, Landa and such, he never showed he can hang with the best on big climbs and even in TT he is average, even if he focuses solely on road races, numbers are numbers, he doesnt have the watts or w/kg and you can only improve so much even with 100% focus on road. I was on the Mortirolo climb when he won his Giro d’Italia U23 and i thought he was going to be a force in GC but looking back that edition was quite poor in talent and his best opponent was Vandenabeele, not exactly turned out to be a world beater, maybe that win is the cause of his GC delusions. Now dont get me wrong he is a great rider but he should focus on classics and winning stages in GT.

They all thought that Pidcock must have some extra big marketing value, that the fans just love him regardless of his results on the road. I can imagine that the team has run out of patience. There are too many riders speaking publicly ("what goes on in the dressing room stays in the dressing room") not a good sign, once that happens it is either an exodus of talent or the management and coach will move on! Since the management restructuring you would have expected maybe a bit of a dip for a season and then push on again. Then there was a big shake up of riders jumping ship and they brought in a lot of real top quality exciting talent from the age groups but they haven't been able to replicate all of those junior titles and real potential onto the World Tour. For me the fact they've all not fulfilled their potential suggests there are issues with coaching and or management. If there's yet another exodus of multiple riders it does not reflect well on the judgement or decision making of management! As far as Pidcock goes, he said he was going all in on the road in 2023, I think he expected to be number 1 leader by the end of last season and when that didn't happen he targeted Olympic Gold to supplement his domestique duties and a pop at a couple of monuments and possibly a short stage race. Personally I think there is a lot more to come from this lad, I believe he is underrated. When he sets a target, focuses on it he generally delivers, as evidenced by his successful Gold medal defence after a big setback and from a seemingly impossible position!

Afaik his main goal was to win the olympic gold and for that, he should probably do MTB events and hope all the road racing does not drop his MTB form. Not the other way around. What even is his goal at the TdF? Even in top shape, I wouldn't consider him top10 material this season. Sure, he has a chance to win a stage, but that has very long odds. So mostly he is there as a quality support for whoever they decide to be their main gc-rider. But when that man is fighting for top10 at best, I don't really see a problem with Tom putting the MTB on a higher priority.

First ETA- I was wondering if you’d address this. Looking back at the TDF unchained season 1 I think it was, where Tom basically started riding for himself because he didn’t want to ride for the new race leader after G Thomas crashed out, I can kind of understand why if it’s majority ruled, they might not have put him in.
@mattpotter8725
@mattpotter8725 3 күн бұрын
TDF Unchained is a TV show. I'm not saying that what was written didn't happen just that it's a show that controversy to get viewers and so I think this is blown all out of proportion. I think INEOS is being run very badly now and has been since the Froome era, heightened because of the horrific crash of Egan Bernal, and they've never recovered. They keep letting some of the best riders leave and I think if they let Pidcock go it would be even worse. I can't even believe after the Giro that G was the leader at the Tour, he's not good enough to win (or even podium) anymore and I think the problem here is the management of INEOS. Going into a Grand Tour the riders should have all been told who was the leader, and if that leader can't continue who would step into the role. You can't just let the riders decide amongst themselves, that's crazy, it's a management decision and if they're not doing this they aren't their jobs properly.

Just a quick one. Zak Dempster is a DS. Management are the people who sit above him and manage the budget, hire and fire etc. The teams owner is a billionaire who likes things done his way and likes to win….Im guessing TP having a mind of his own and knowing his own worth isn’t good at not keeping his opinions to himself… especially as Ineos has been a shit show for some time.

Team Ineos used one off the 30 rides slots for Pauline Ferrand-Prevot for a 2 years contract 100% focus on MTB (except 2024 road world) and 0 UCI man road point obviously. Looks to me they had a strategy to nails 2 Olympic gold medals in 2024 (Pinarello trowing some money to develop 2 MTB bikes) and THEY DELIVER earning MTB 🌈jersey too. Now Ineos are not happy with the cost in UCI point? Too bad for them but they can't blame Tom and Pauline to have done what they were supposed to do. Soudal Quick-Step (without Remco team) and Ineos have the same problem. They come with 5 leaders and no domestique .

No. Besides Pidcock is winning in the off road disciplines, in fact where he's won on the road you could attribute those performances to the skills he's gained as an MTB and cyclocross rider..

I don’t think Cyclocross is the issue. Flemish riders have been doing that in the winter for decades, partly to help them prepare for the Spring Classics. It’s the mountain bike that’s the issue as it clashes with summer racing on the road.

Ineos have declined so much in cycling. I thought they weren't attracting the riders/talent but it appears its the management. Their approach is not working in any aspect. Something isn’t right at INEOs and results should be better. Something is failing and they keep shedding top timers G was third in the hero some min off the lead, 2nd in 2023 second. Richard Carapaz, Egan Bernal, Tao GH won Froome won… My guess it the management are the problem. I suppose top riders, need to make as much money as possible, in the short careers they have, especially when they have proven they can win. I would never fully believe anything Pidcock and Kurt Bogaerts say. They are the biggest navel gazers in the peloton, always looking atothers and external factors to blame for his road and Cx results. Plus they will always end up doing whatever they want. To see him as the best of the rest and even close to Evenepoel and Roglic in GC races to me seems a very big leap of faith for a new team. First see it and than believe in it (and pay for it) I would say. For now he has never ever been able to challenge any of the big 6 in any race head to head. Not even when they were not atheist best,

the trick, the 'problem' ... Is ineos could not BUY the next top performer of develop the next one, the have to see that coming, how and when... 1st sign after Bernal win in TDF you must recognize Thomas was not happy to give up leadership and ... Ineos wont enforce properly ... Until 2nd sign. Giro happen and they the management put that team all in the shoulders of Bernal NO GT no Pidcock NO other leader in the team... 3rd sign Tom P rise in one day races and Bernal crash.... BUT then NONE has a blame on this management just did the movistar move, PUT THE VETERAN AS LEADER, AND AS A GC there fore thomas acted and being the road block to any ... BUT why? why Ineos wont learn IF they send away Froome and Sr Wigo... suddenly the management is not looking forward and focus they have some talent BUT THEY MUST SEE ... THEY DONT HAVE ANY of top 10 guys in the peloton. I don't like how this is unwrapping Because pidcock is playing bad his cards ineos is wasting talented as Bernal and Rodriguez and veterans like Thomas deserve better, but is all marketing and business ... what to expect... sonner than later a clean slate from top to bottom or vice versa but it will happen. or ineos will fade and vanish from all world tour contention.
