On September 9, 2024, Stephanie Zelnick, clarinetist, scaled Mount Elbert, Colorado to perform the highest recorded classical music concert in the Rockies. At 14,439 feet, Mount Elbert is the tallest peak in the Rocky Mountains and the second highest mountain in the lower 48 states. The concert was recorded by videographer Chris Clark, of Clark Media Productions, who made the climb with her, along with Melissa Davis-Capka.
This is part of Dr. Zelnick's project on how altitude affects wind musicians and how to use lessons from playing at higher elevations to optimize health and performance for classical musicians. She premiered three new pieces for clarinet on top of the mountain and played a fourth.
Due to Covid, the concert was changed from a duo to solo concert last minute. The composers included in this concert are Anne Guzzo, Thylia Yazzie, and Florence Price. This project was funded by the University of Kansas General Research Fund and the Hall Center for the Humanities.
