Finally new video! I am lucky that I have some friends who work in the Dallas Heritage Auctions, I have seen some really amazing artwork and props there.

oh yeah. isn't that cool. I feel lucky I have friends who are collectors or dealers...it's hard to believe sometimes all this art we enjoy is out there floating around...it's like a modern day treasure hunt and there's so much stuff people don't even know where it is. It keeps the hobby incredibly interesting.

I got a metal plate with the Kirby /Captain America splash ( 7:50) on it, hanging on my wall. Arts nice, color makes a big difference though. Great video Rich.

It hurts my soul that Silvestri said he hasn’t seen the Wolvie Cruxifixction cover since he penciled it and maybe he got three hundy for it!

yeah. I'd never heard that but it's definitely possible. He was doing a LOT of work at the time..he was probably in the eye of the storm and just didn't think long term how iconic it would end up.

Great to see you back on KZbin, Rich. You've been missed. Recently took plunge on commissions and am expecting a Jim Lee piece soon. Very shocked to see the "controversy" surrounding this. My thoughts on it are: it's Jim Lee! He can charge what he wants! Again, good to see you back!

Everyone online has an opinion. If you enjoy it. And can afford it. I think it's great. Jim definitely knows his market. Like Bruce Timm is a great example. Albert can put up a few hundred pieces. They almost all sell. James Jean etc. There's many examples of this. Enjoy your piece. I bet it will be amazing!

@@RichardFriendartist wise words, Richard, and I completely agree. Yes, very excited to get the Jim Lee commissions! Can't believe it's happening!

So good to hear you again. Such a nice surprise this morning! Some truly beautiful pieces. I think that McFarlane Spidey 1 will fetch 3-5 mil. I can think of 3 people off hand that will be gunning for it, even at the cost of their whole comic collections. If Rob's New Mutants #98 cover sells for anything close, it'll definitely eclipse that. Its just that iconic. Love that Brunner Doc Strange, he had an epic run on Red Sonja if I recall. That Kirby Cap spread is super special too, such a historical piece with a crisp heroic Cap busting through the glass. I'd pay a cool Mil for that. (Assuming a few mil was in the pocket.)
@RichardFriendartist3 ай бұрын
that's what I knew Brunner from Red Sonja. Thanks. Yeah he's really good and in some ways maybe not known widely enough these days. I love going through old comics and you just get blown away by a fill in issue or two by an artist you maybe don't hear their named kicked around as much. Those diamonds in the rough are cool to discover.

Hey Richard! Really great vid, love listening to your stories. Small thing but the audio is only in my left ear for this video. Apart from that cool stuff ::o

I'll try and double check everything. I have audio in both sides of my headphones but one is definitely quieter. I might need to get a new audio interface. I'm thinking mine is causing a few of the issues. I am currently dealing with since taking my computer area apart. It's tricky because I got a new computer. Each generation of Windows seems to limit your capabilities to troubleshoot or work through issues. Really annoying.

Nope, it was not Mike Zeck. That page sold long ago for probably $20- The story within the story is I inked the cover and the first 7-8 interior pages. Marvel then had Mike and I go to SDCC in 1984 to promote the series. Looks to me like Jack Able inked it! Who would have known the comic art market would have been so high today?
@JohnBeatty3 ай бұрын
I went back to SDCC this year (2024) since it had been 40 years. A friend SMZ Comics had me signing at his booth, but I was pretty much invisible there due to not being around for so long. It was fun, but the crowds were insane, and while it was fun... not sure if I want to ever go back.
@RichardFriendartist3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much John for the insight. I can't imagine knowing that I sold a page for a small amount and then it would be come so iconic...it's really insane. But it definitely makes the hobby and doing art exciting. Huge fan of your art John...thank you for posting!

Great video, thanks. Like you I am very surprised by the pool of (great) artists over represented in this top, such as David Cockrum who is at least twice presented when there is no Bernie Wrightson masterpieces. Several Jim Lee, MC Farlane and FM it says something about the market of comics art. It is very polarised. I collect myself I have a few minor pieces (such as Ian Churchill, Gabriel Walta, Brett Booth) but I am very proud of them, being the sole owner of an original artwork has no price in my heart.

If you're looking for ideas for videos, I personally got a lot out of your old _Journey of a Thousand Miles_ series, which are not really art tutorials as much as knowledge and advice based on life experience and observations. Maybe mixed in with what you (and perhaps Kelsey) see going on the the comics medium.

Maybe look into pre-2000s pre-digital traditional cel animation.

Force of Will is a very iconic card. I don't personally think it's an amazing piece of art, but the significance of the card drove that price up I'm sure.

Have you seen Heinrich Kley's work? His color water colors over inks looks great and he's a good painter s well. His factory series is poster worthy.

Mike Zeck said that he didn’t make any money off the Secret War Spider-Man piece
@RichardFriendartist4 ай бұрын
Yeah. More likely it was sold 30 years back. Probably for a few hundred bucks. Did he get the original back. Or did one of the inkers originally. Always interesting to know how many times piece has changed owners also. Hard to say if it's been in one collection for 30-40 years or moved around a few times.

@@RichardFriendartist yea , the original was sold for couple hundreds in the early years but changed hands a few times and sold for the million plus. Mike has said that he doesn’t try to reclaim anything that he has done in the past. He’s retired but I think he’s content with doing the work and moving on to the next thing when he was doing comics. It’s unfortunate that he’s no longer doing comics. My favorite top 5 artist
