Great video Peter. I think you should do a video of this car when you remove the return line from the external cooler and turn the car on draining one or 2 quarts and then turning it off. Fill back one or 2 quarts and repeat. Access to the external cooler line is super easy as you know and this will basically get all of the fluid out in one go versus multiple drain and fills as you mention. Multiple drain and fills is good as for ongoing maintenance. If you’re trying to do a complete one especially on this vehicle it’s so easy to do a complete replacement in one go. Thanks for posting have a great day

Good video. Glad to see that when you say flush that you don't mean power flush with a machine. So far I've only done a single drain and fill (at 28,000 miles) on our RAV4 but it only has 41,000 miles on it.

I did my transmission filter and fluid yesterday. My 04 v6 3.3 awd highlander took bit more than 5.5 quarts. 3.7 quarts is not enough.

Since this only replaces 1/3 of the fluid in the transmission, only the pan fluid, I also repeat this process every other oil changes or two more times. This replaces more of the fluid.

Another informative video but you need to post one showing the actual removal process on a first generation Highlander starting with the difficult to access bolts on the drivers side so we can see the easiest way to remove them.

On my ford i changed the filter and gasket. Then ran the car with the trans return tube off and kept filling the trans as i went. 12 quarts out and 12 quarts in.

Hello, I rarely drive a Toyota highlander Hybrid 2006 in Germany. Car USA import, I want to change the rear differential, what do you recommend? 85w. 90 or do you have a detailed description? Best regards from Germany

wondering why you did not drain the differential fluid?

Thanks for good video instructions. Do you have any suggestion on what might be the cause for a strange behavior of my Toyota Highlander 2001 (2.5l/2WD) every once in while when turning the ignition key, it will crank but does not start. Once it starts (after two/three attempts) no issues during the drive, smooth run. Car battery is almost new, (2 years), Thanks in advance

Do you hold the gas pedal down while cranking ? No , they holding gas pedal down slightly while cranking . If it seems to start this way , the idle air control valve is not adjusting for a cold engine .

Clean throttle body. Common issue. IAC will get cleaned also when you clean throttle body.

How come you don,t pull the transmission pan and clean it .
@stevensevek61514 жыл бұрын
At that mileage, that is a good question. Maybe the owner said the pan was pulled last time he had it done. It doesn't need to be done very often. In fact probably only once during the first owner's time with the vehicle.

Peter, do you recommend just doing a flush or do you recommend changing the filter and fluid? Also, do you think any brand of ATF is ok?
@ahmadghosheh31044 жыл бұрын
keli Surfs I wouldn’t and never did a flush. Drain and refill is the best option especially on high mileage cars. This will replace about 1/3. Of the existing fluid. I also recommend doing it every other oil change till most of the ATF has been replaced. As far as brands, you can’t go wrong with OEM brand, safest of all options. I do use STP with WS rating.

I will not use after market multi vehicle fluids. I will use fluids designed as a replacement only for what my vehicle calls for and not for other applications. Toyota transaxles/transmissions are made by Aisin which is mostly owned by Toyota so obviously Aisin ATF can be trusted and is usually less expensive than ATF from the dealer. Available from Amazon or Rock Auto.
@inverseuniverse57274 жыл бұрын
All due respect , But there is still quite a bit of friction material in bottom of the pan . It would be ideal to remove pan , clean remaining debris . Doing this , you will NOT need to repeat 2 -3 additional times.
@stevensevek61514 жыл бұрын
He is doing a poor man's flush which means doing three or more consecutive drain and fills. The point is simply to refresh the old fluid with new which is more important than dropping the pan and replacing the screen. The fluid is actually damaged from overheating. Although I agree, at that mileage and if the pan has never previously been dropped, that's what I would have done along with the three drain and fills. The drain and fills will remove more old fluid than dropping the pan. It's still a personal choice. I've had a number of Hondas over the years and they don't even have a pan to drop. If Honda can go for hundreds of thousands of miles without that service, it's likely Toyotas can as well. Still I would prefer to do it at least once during my ownership of the vehicle.

Just bought a 2020 Highlander 2wd What mileage do you recommend for fluid changes- transmission, oil, radiator, and differential ? I was told by the dealer that oil/filter changes every 10,000 miles due to new, all synthetic oil. Is this correct ?
@stevensevek61514 жыл бұрын
That's what Toyota says. I would do engine oil at 5,000 to 8,000. Transmission drain & fill at 30,000 to 60,000. If you tow a trailer or drive in the mountains a lot then at the lower number. Coolant depends on what is in the vehicle. Long life coolant is usually good for either two or five years. Differential oil every 30,000 miles. Unless your owner's manual says more often but if yours is FWD there shouldn't be any differential fluid. Brake fluid... I forget how often. And I believe you have electronic power steering so no power steering fluid to change.
@guidedbygreen14803 жыл бұрын
Personally I'd change my car oil under severe conditions in the manual which is usually 5-8k miles
@tardeliesmagic4 жыл бұрын
"Under normal driving condition" is nonsense! Most vehicles drive in heavy traffic and in cold/hot weather plus most of us leave it in "D" Drive when stationary which is not advisable and any one of those is "Severe driving condition",so it needs changing at 100k/100,000 miles MAX.At 60-80k is advised/recommended.
