Actually for the record, greyhounds are incredibly sweet, gentle and loving creatures. they make amazing pets. They don't bark. They don't believe it or not, chase other animals around. They usually just want to chase a ball and play and sleep. They have a lot of special needs because of their speed. But they are the sweetest, most gentle pets you could ever ask for. I know this because not only did I work for an adoption agency for greyhounds, but I also had 2 myself for over 10 years, and they were the best pets I could have ever asked for.

The muzzles are used with greyhounds to protect them from getting caught up biting the lure line and nipping each other which can cause tears in their thin skin. I’ve adopted retired racers for 24 years and all of mine wear this type of soft muzzle when playing with each other. Sighthounds have a different play style than most dogs which actually looks like Velociraptors chasing each other. It’s all fast movement, open snapping jaws, chasing each other and biting each others head. They don’t use any force in the bite but it looks very scary to non sighthound owners. In an over excited state like chasing a fast lure, they can accidentally hurt each other or themselves. I assure you, this hound is very happy to be chasing the lure and doesn’t care at all that muzzle is on. These hounds love to run almost as much as they love to sleep in cushy bed! I type this as my 92 lb retired racer Archibald snoozes across my legs in bed. They are amazing athletes and wonderful family members!

I’ve had greyhounds since 96, vest if all the dogs I’ve had. They sleep 18-20 hours a day so they can have that energy for zoomies. Sweetest dogs in the world, and smart, I talk to them like people and they understand, sometimes I have to repeat myself but the do understand. They also hold the worlds record for high jump at 15’ last I heard. I don’t tell my dogs they can jump, my fence is only 6’, so I help them into the car to set limitations in their mind.

Yes, they can reach top speed in two strides, which is why Sighthounds should never be tied up outdoors (among other reasons) - they'll snap their necks. Their backs are hinged like a cheetas. The rule of eyes... Round pupils in the front of their skulls mean they're predators and flat pupils in the side mean they're prey. To make a predator do something well, it has to want to do it; a flighty dog is useless and potentially dangerous depending on the size. I have a competitive Schutzhund Rottweiler and there's no way I can make Rollo do anything he doesn't want to do for me. To make a prey animal do it, you have to control its instinct to bolt; a flighty horse, for example, is downright dangerous all of the time.

​@@Philip-hv2kcYeah you have to be conscious of that in a coursing dog. Not a good idea to have them around small animals or kids off leash. That's for sure. You can be reasonably confident through socialisation, but still you have to know your animal and organise its world accordingly. I take my Rottweiler everywhere I go, but he's been socialised and trained to the absolute extreme. Few people have the skills, experience and most importantly the time to put into an animal like that. It took hundreds and hundreds of hours to get right and very careful planning to train him. I never recommend working dogs to people who have to ask.
