Despite the ref being an absolute bunny the game was one of the best Ive seen and the drawn series is the best thing that could have happened for world rugby. fantastic Lions tour. Great to see a team come here , take on the best in super rugby and then a 3 test series against the world champions, and draw the series. Brilliant support from what have to be the most loyal and decent sports fans you could hope to host in your country. Long may these tours continue. It gives rugby a breath of fresh air it definitely needs.

I love the silliness of the commentary "accidentally, absolutely - it doesn't matter". Yes it does - there's a subsection of the laws to deal with it specifically. "11.6 Accidental Offside - (a) When an offside player cannot avoid being touched by the ball or by a team-mate carrying it, the player is accidentally offside. If the player’s team gains no advantage from this, play continues. If the player’s team gains an advantage, a scrum is formed with the opposing team throwing in the ball." Romain Poite looked at the replay and deemed that Ken Owens couldn't have avoided being touched by the ball. I would agree with him on that. Even if he hadn't half-caught it (which is a really difficult instinct to avoid), the ball would have still unavoidably touched him. (There's also the extra matters of whether Kieran Read interfered with Liam Williams in the air, and whether it actually went forwards or backwards from Williams' shoulder. Those are all close calls that are open to interpretation. Ultimately the only interpretation that matters is Romain Poite's)

Then play should have went on as the Lions did not gain an advantage from this. This would've meant The All blacks, who had a clear gap to run into, most likely would've scored a try. The Lions didn't gain an advantage from the so-called "accidental" offside, therefore why the fuck was a scrum given? Either way, the referee has had a howler, if he had let play go on, AB's most like would've won, if he had given a penalty, AB's most likely would've won.
@jamesatkins7592

Yeah and the lions were penalised for challenging for the ball in the air in test 2 with much less contact than there was on Williams here.

TomosANTIGUATomos exactly correct my friend. It was accidental and the award of a scrum to the attacking team was spot on. NZ captain trying to tell the referee the rules was quite funny and showed himself up as he was wrong. But in NZ they never admit that but they are getting a bit one eyed nowadays....you cant win em all even if youre the best nation to play the game for the last century and a bit!

Given that the All Black 13 had two players in front of him and another chasing, it's unlikely he would have scored. Everyone had stopped because of the whistle.

This is the truth from a Lions supporter; Lions were brilliant defensively and with their kicking amazing, did everyone proud. However ABs showed their class and we were lucky in the end to come away with the series draw. But it's good for Rugby that the ABs don't win everything.

archvermin As a Lions supporter, I feel we were very lucky. I have never seen a AB side squander so many try scoring chances, maybe it's the end of an era. They seem to have lost that killer instinct. They lost to Ireland in the N/H autumn, then beat three weak S/H teams in the championship, then won one, lost one and drew one against the Lions. They have a lot of young players, all coming into the team at the same time, I think it has unsettled them. Great series though, congrats to both teams, both captains and both sets of fans.

Lions fan here, I've never been so happy to take a draw. While we played outstanding rugby, it was a miracle we were still in this game thanks to Farrell's boot. Even in the second test we were hanging off the proverbial cliff at 18-9. If you'd asked Lions fans before the series if they'd take a draw, how many would've said yes?
@archvermin
@archvermin 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed on your point about the young players, while there are experienced caps on the team (Read, Smith, etc), a good number of them have not tasted abject failure before. Now clearly this result is no where as bad as 2007 in France, but it's an opportunity for this generation of All Blacks to take in a portion of what transformed Richie McCaw into a legend. Cheers to the supporters of both teams.

Allblacks couldn't put on there usual dominant performance because this Lions team unlike 2005 came to play rugby. They matched ABs up front were great in defense, and showed endeavor and character when attacking. Coming from an Allblacks fan myself this is worthy of respect. Of course the ABs shot themselves in the foot SBW, stupid errors, bad decisions etc. ABs got unlucky with the ref but so did Lions at times the officiating was poor which almost spoiled a Greg series.

Why cant we appreciate that we witnessed a thrilling test series fought to the bitter end, where both teams had ups and downs, aswell as luck and unluckyness. Sure I saw somewhere (BBC doc on Warburton's retirement?) either another international or Gatland himself saying they thought Sam Warburton's finest moment as a captain came in this game. He barely spoke to the ref all game, while Kieran Reed was talking constantly, but when the offside call came, Sam went up to Poite and asked for the TMO to look at it. Because he hadn't been backchatting all game and it was the first time Sam had questioned him, Poite took him very seriously and sent it to TMO, then agreed it was accidental, leading to the draw rather than the loss. You can really see the difference in how they deal with the ref at that point, as Sam calmly gets clarification ("Black or Red?") then simply steps back and tells his team it's a scum, while Reed tries to tell the ref what the laws are ("No, no. No. Romain, in the rules it's not an accidental offside.")

Technically the accidental off-side might be justifiable based on the rules, but normally the ref would probably just give the penalty without the video replay and everything. I also disagree with the first penalty against the lions but 3 points early in the game is different to 3 points just before the end I think. New Zealand were very unlucky there. All 3 tests have been decided by penalties and discipline/conditions though which is a real shame, especially with both teams' attacking skills. Test 1: Countless penalties and knock-ons by the lions Test 2: Big red card all blacks, yellow card and a crap load of penalties and knock-ons by the lions trying to throw away their advantage. Difficult conditions. Test 3: Lions still conceding lots of knock-ons releasing pressure but being misers with penalties. "Very greasy conditions" according to Gatland. B. Barrett's goal kicking has cost the all blacks wins in test 2 and 3 big time. Surely someone else will take over kicking duties now. I thought someone would for the 3rd test. Great kicking from Farrell in 2 and 3 though.

@jamesatkins7592 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's fair point and the lions have had some success I mean these are the best system of players we can find theoretically. I just think they would theoretically be better if they were a full-time team. The all blacks threw away the 2nd test though and goal kicking could be better in 2 and 3 so the lions relied on that a bit at times. Still plenty of good rugby played. I'm not saying they'd be better than a good all blacks team just that they would have a better record than you mentioned. England have a better record than the lions overall apparently, although I imagine they have a bad ratio of matches won to loss in New Zealand itself. Overall I think it's fair enough to say if the lions theoretically had more time as a team they would play better. The all blacks though would also be more familiar with their opponents then but I don't think that out ways things.. Anyway a shame this is only once every 12 yrs

This was an exciting series indeed, can only imagine what the SA series for the men in red would be like in 2021 (if I'm right on the year). Too bad this game didn't into extra time though, which would have made things very interesting just like Romain Poite's call.

Great Lions tour. Interim All Blacks yet to solidify a dominant unbeatable team to the calibre of 2015 World Cup side. Usually the case rebuilding after world cups. All Black fans always expect to ABs to dominate every visiting team. Lions side were good and grew as the tour went on. But ABs butchered this test and should've won. Lions kickers 100%. Jordie should've had the kicking duties. Missed opportunities that ABs normally take. Too many errors. Great series. Lions touring fans and NZ economy the winner at the end of the day ;)

Laws of rugby 13.3; Position of the kicker’s team at a kick-off: All the kicker’s team must be behind the ball when it is kicked. If they are not, a scrum is formed at the centre. Their opponents throw in the ball. Read is well in front of the ball when it's kicked (4:25 in this video, 77:54 match time). Should be a red scrum on the half-way line.

The men dedicate themselves from an early age to get a chance to play rugby professionally. They climb the ranks until they are considered to be worthy players for their clubs. They then have to impress at club level to get selected for their countries. They then have to prove themselves at the highest level of international rugby. They then get picked as the best players of the British Isles yo get selected for the Lions. They put their bodies on the line and train hard just to win those 3 games. They go toe to toe with the best country in the world on their soil for 3 tests to earn a series draw. Gets called 'luck'. No such thing as luck at elite level sport mate, only upsets.

If the lions scored more than the all blacks in each test then we would have embarrassed them. BUT we didn't. Same way as barrett DIDN'T make all his kicks so at the end of the day the scores are what they are. If lions took their chances I'm the first test we would have won that. Too many shoulda, woulda, couldas from these professional KZbin coaches

@Jack Of Blades the lions have a much better record against the All Blacks in NZ than either of the individual nations they represent. Having four countries to choose from is clearly the reason for their success. Individually the home nations have lost approximately 20 games in a row against the All Blacks in NZ. Says it all really

Good decision, here is the exact rule : "When a player knocks-on and an offside team-mate next plays the ball, the offside player is liable to sanction if playing the ball prevented an opponent from gaining an advantage". The most important is the end of the rule. That's not the case here, Fekitoa could not play the ball.

I was hoping that last week's poor performance was an isolated incident, but this was another garbage outing by the All Blacks. Flawless handling and seizing every opportunity has always been a staple of New Zealand rugby, yet those things were nonexistent in this game. What's going on here?

Good point- the ABs shithouse performance will be swept under the carpet while everyone whinges about the non-penalty. Some of Hansen's selections were poor- the arrogance of two players with little or no test experience starting was exposed. The All Blacks will NOT win a Rugby World Cup with Beauden Barrett at 10- the guy is flash and excitement but cannot control a tight game- surely this has been soundly proven the past two weeks.

Some of the blame should be given to Beauden Barrett for missing some of the kicks. Inclu last weeks game. I think he missed two tonight and a couple last week. A great playmaker, but an average goal kicker thats for sure. I dont know why the ABs didnt have Jordie kick considering hes the better goal kicker.

Nah you know what I'm gonna stop whining and just give credit where credit is due. I said it before they even landed in NZ that this Lions squad is probably one of the best I've ever seen. Balance is the word that describes them the most for me. Athleticism mixed with poise and aggression made sure this wouldn't be a onesided contest. They showed up and showed out and quiet easily could've won this series 2-1. As for the AB's there are things that we can work on but I wouldn't say for one bit we're declining. We have unearthed new solid players in Jordie and Laumape. I'm sure the year so far will be looked at through a microscope and we'll surely find another gear as we more than usually do. On to the next one.

What a great game, shame about the draw and the way it ended. I thought initially Reid would be pinged for colliding with Liam Williams in the air, but I don't know what to make re offside or accidental. I don't think it's fair to say that cost the all blacks the series, they should have put the game away with any number of fumbled passed. The lions did a good job to hang in there. I think Hanson will rue the ABs not being more clinical, they are usually much sharper than this and Barrett's kicking was off from the tee.

Josiah. M it’s not really 4 counties vs 1 as the team on the field is still 15 players and not 60, if there were 60 on the field, then yes you could say that, Lions always play away and have never played with each other and join each other on the tour, so every team has advantages and disadvantages so it is always fair game.
