@@anthonycorboy5122 I take your point. Such a margin call. *But* one could argue that Kieran Reid took someone out (can’t see whom - AWJ? Sanjay?) in the air just before the offside, and one could also argue that the ball literally landed in the sub prop’s (forgot his name) arms, then he *immediately* dropped it. Any *slight* movement towards the ball was purely reflexive, not pre-meditated. So, accidental offside, no different from if the ball had hit him on the back and bounced off. I.e, scrum to All Blacks. To be clear, I am saying that *both* calls could have gone either way, so a scrum New Zealand was probably a fair decision/outcome. Yes, I have thought about this a lot... Happy to debate it (respectfully) further, if you so wish. PS Also remember, at every breakdown, the ref could give at least three penalties to each side! EVERYONE is offside, and EVERYONE plays the ball on the floor. The best refs call it even and let it go.

Doesn't matter as the record books show the series as 1-1, but you have to be delusional if you think the Lions deserved to draw or win this series. Outplayed in the 1st test, they can thank their lucky stars SBW was sent off in the 2nd one, even then they only scraped through. Then NZ fluffed a few kicking points in the 3rd and got nailed by the ref in the end.

Do you need someone to explain to you how competitive sports work? Or put another way... you have to be delusional to think that the All Blacks deserved to draw or win this series.... won the first test well enough, thuggish behaviour saw them lose a man in the second test and fluffing kicks saw them drawing the last. But it's always the refs fault, isn't it? Come on, man, even Jonathon Kaplan said that Read should have been penalised for taking out Williams in the air, and if Poite had done that, the Lions would have hoofed the ball upfield and actually could have come away with a win.
@Nineteenseventy24 жыл бұрын
@@Karma-qt4ji FYI Kaplan pointed to law 11.6 - which states "when an offside player cannot avoid being touched by the ball or by a team-mate carrying it, the player is accidentally offside" - and was baffled at Poite's decision to award the All Blacks a scrum instead of a penalty in the 79th minute. "This is something I cannot understand and seems completely wrong - it appears ludicrous to change your decision after agreeing it with the TMO," he added. "I would, though, say I have huge sympathy with Romain as this was a high-pressure, volatile situation, and it may be his command of English was not the best at this time. "He was, though, technically wrong to use the TMO to check for offside - although he may have done so in the best interests of the game, which I have no issue with. But what many people, even those outside of New Zealand, will not understand is how he came to reverse that decision." Food for thought?
@Karma-qt4ji4 жыл бұрын
@@Nineteenseventy2 You are very selective in your quotations and I see you have steered well clear of the bit where Kaplan says Read was at fault. Let me remind you.... quoting from an article on stuff.co.nz "Kaplan, the most experienced test rugby referee of all time, said that call was "ludicrous" and "technically wrong" but argued that All Blacks captain Read had made an illegal challenge in the air. Lions fullback Williams fumbled Beauden Barrett's kick off after Owen Farrell had levelled the scores at 15-15 at Eden Park, and Owens was initially penalised for being accidentally offside. Kaplan disagreed, saying Read was the guilty party with an illegal challenge in attempting to gather the ball from the restart, Kaplan wrote in the Telegraph. "I would argue that Williams had already taken the space in the air and that Read could not win possession from where he was, even with an outstretched arm," Kaplan wrote. Romain Poite initially awarded the All Blacks a penalty before consultation with the TMO led to a change in call. The South African said Read's intervention caused Williams to knock on and if the referee had identified this, the ensuing penalty for the Lions would have ended any controversy on the matter." If the Lions had been awarded a penalty and even gone on to win the game and series, few neutrals would have batted an eyelid. Blame would have been apportioned to the performance of the team on the day (how many chances did they butcher in this game???), the discipline of the team (aka SBW and his red card), Barrett's goal kicking abilities despite Hansen being questioned about this after the first test, and a few other peripherals. No one would be talking about this one decision and putting the entire outcome of the series on it's shoulders. In other words, even staunch New Zealand fans would have (after a few days of grumbling about the game going soft) accepted the decision and moved on.
@Nineteenseventy24 жыл бұрын

Using the signwriting on the field as reference, look where Williams last touched the ball and where the second player touched it. If anything, it appears to be moving backwards, but is made to look worse by the speed that Williams himself is moving backwards due to the impact with Read. Now, imagine being Poite for a minute (ugh!!)... he sees the incident on the big screen and the ball does not seem to go forward much, if at all; he sees Read taking out Williams in the air, while not really in a position to retrieve the ball himself (a penalty against Read, according to Jonathon Kaplan); he sees that if he had called play-on, then ALB had the ball and was in a gap with only a single defender in his way and he knows that Craig Joubert made a match deciding mistake that cost him his career. Being Poite, idiot that he is, he does not have the balls to reverse the penalty, especially against the home team; he can see that this is not the same thing he thought he saw from his real time position, but he also now thinks that a penalty against the Lions would be harsh and potentially match deciding. So he goes for the save, lying blatantly (the second player never played it, my arse!!) and awarded a scrum to the All Blacks as the best compromise he can come up with. Personally, I think he should have penalised Read for the impact in the air. History is full of such penalties, so much so that neutral fans would not have batted an eyelid at the decision. Partisan fans might have grumbled for a couple of days about the game going soft and but would soon have dropped it. Even if the Lions had gone on to win the game / series from a penalty at this point, the penalty would never have caused the controversy that Poite has now caused, and would be of less interest to us than say the SBW red card. In a nutshell, I think Poite cocked it up (duh!) but I don't think he screwed the All Blacks with his mistake. It's the controversy surrounding the issue that makes it worthy of years of debate and that is something rugby needs to avoid - controversy. My two cents...

Yeah i felt sorry for the ref,he was going to stay with his original decision of a penalty even after reviewing and agreeing with the tmo that it was a penalty.Then fellow countryman garces who was one of the touch judges tells him something in French thru his earpiece and the ref reversed the decision.They played the audio on a nz rugby show a couple of days later.Remember the 2015 Scotland vs wallabies when ref Joubert basically had the same situation of an accidental offside make what he thought was the right call.Upon seeing the replay he had made a mistake but back then the tmo couldn’t be asked in that situation,then we all remember him for running off the field as soon as he blew the full time whistle.Did the ref make an error I thought so,I thought he lost his bottle again str8 after when the all blacks dominated the scrum and he let play go on with the lions halfback picking up the ball and nearly starting a counterattack.I guess it sets it up for the next lions tour to nz.

@@janegeorge1957 Yea, very similar comparison. Sad to see the ref influenced like that.

Sean O'Brien was right - with a more adventurous / creative coach, those filthy, bad losing sheep-shagging dregs were there for the taking. It should have been a 3-0 series to the Lions
