People may not believe it but MD was but an afterthought during the first 10 years of the state championships. They watched as DLS, Cen10, then SJB came into prominence and dominated, with a few other teams winning (Canyon, Grant). Rollo and the alumni realized what they needed to do to win and they went out and did it.

Totally. The great Mater Dei was nowhere. They didn’t even play in the game until Bosco had already won twice. In fact Santa Margarita and Servite also played in a state title before MD did. MD was 0-4 against DLS.

But the fact was he needed to go full football factory mode to stay relevant. Not only was SJB on top, but Gorman had eclipsed all of Cali, with Cali players! That affected not only the Trinity league but also Cen10 and the IE. I would argue that MD may not have reached its lofty perch had Tony Sanchez stayed at BG.

It's a different level of football in the Southern Section. The competitive culture starts at the youth level and carries into high school. There were many teams in the SS that would've beat Serra(SM) like this in both D1 and even a few in D2.

California is the size of almost the entire east coast. Of course there gonna have good teams the state is massive and they have outdoor weather all year long. If you made a state the same size as cali on the east coast say from NY down to florida then cali would have there hands full. Also sunny weather year round. And all private schools recruit. They offer these kids free tours just like colleges do when they recruit and a cheaper education than a regular student.

Short version: The "open division" championship game is based on selecting the highest ranked section champion from a northern CA division and the highest ranked section champion from a southern CA division--i.e., the "best" section champions from each half of the state are selected similarly to a college football bowl game. Longer explanation: CA is divided into various sections--e.g., LA City, San Diego, Central CA, the Southern Section (the largest section with essentially encompasses all of southern CA except for San Diego County and the city of LA). Each section has its own divisions based on school size/team strength, and teams go into a typical playoff based on regular season/league results to find the various CIF section champions as subdivided into various divisions. MD played in the southern section Division 1 (highest level) championship against Servite and won. Southern section (going back decades) almost always has the strongest team in southern California. So MD was selected from the south for the State Open game. Further, as Division 1 of the southern section is so strong relative to the rest of the country (let alone the state, with 4 teams in the undisputed top 15 in the country), winning the southern section title was ultimately much tougher than winning this state game. Serra won the Central Coast Section Division 1 title, avenging its only loss of the season to that point to St. Francis of Mountain View. A committee selected Serra for the open championship over other top ranked Northern CA section champions, Concord De La Salle and Folsom, who ranked similarly but had more blemishes on their respective records. Section Champions not selected for the open, e.g., De La Salle and Folsom, are placed in play-in regional games to decide who goes to lower (as opposed to "open") division state championship games. Thus, for example, in the Division 1-AA regional games (the next highest level below the "open" division), De La Salle played Folsom to decide who represents the north (Folsom won), and Cathedral Catholic of San Diego played Orange Lutheran of Orange County to decide who represents the south (Cathedral won). Cathedral then beat Folsom in the Division 1-AA state final. It's not a perfect system as the open division is based on humans choosing teams, but (at least this year) it's clear that these were the most worthy open division championship teams. Cathedral struggled to beat Orange Lutheran in the regional final, after MD blew out Orange Lutheran in its trinity league game, causing Orange Lutheran to finish second to last in the trinity league.
