I read in Astaire's autobiography that for the sake of authenticity, he had two shots of bourbon before filming started, then another shot between each take; the best take was of course the last one (knowing Fred the perfectionist, there were likely a lot of takes!) and at some point he cut his ankle on a shattered glass.

Fred Astaire is a legend! He was totally unique.

Watch "That's entertainment" it's a documentary about how amazing these guys are. There's a segment where they filmed Astaire practicing, and then filming the segment. The moves were so precise you could overlay it and they were exact. Astaire was famous for being technically perfect.
