The LX with the 5.0 was the hot ticket back then, with less weight than the GT (and a lower profile on the street). This one is as close to 1992 as you can get. Thank you High Octane Classics and Mr Magnante (and hope the biop comes back clear) ~ Chuck

@@frebnewman6403 The Caprice was a good car, we had them with LT1 350s in 94-96 that would do 155 mph. I never was issued one. And I’m jealous about your 90 mustang 😀.

If you wanted a lighter 5.0 coupe, the LX was the way to go. I'm pretty sure it was an LX notch that Revan Evan used to set those crazy low 1/4 mi times back in the early days. Too bad all these cars were thrashed so much that clean survivors cost so much. One note - the SN95 was the first to get five-lugs on all models.

That car is a cream puff! I daily drive my 91’ Mustang Lx 2.3 5 speed car although I swapped in a 2.3 turbo from my old 86’ Thunderbird Turbocoupe about 15 years ago. Been a reliable and economical car all these years. Just recently I pulled the 2.3 turbo out to reseal the entire engine since it was starting to leak with its original 200k mile gaskets/seals, added a higher flow exhaust manifold and a slightly larger hot side along with a new T3 turbo and repainted the engine Ford grey as original. I’ve put a few thousand miles on it since the minor refresh of the 2.3t and it runs a little better than before and doesn’t require premium like it did before,, probably due to cleaning the carbon out and replacing the main/rod bearings and lapping the valves’ new springs, etc. In the winter I’ll put around 300lbs of sand bags in the hatch area over and behind the axle and it goes almost anywhere, also thanks to a lighter engine up front.

The GT was available in both convertible and hatchback, not just hatchback. There were a bunch of GT convertibles made back in the day. Only the notchback wasn't available in GT trim. Minor correction on your facts: the pony wheels appeared on all five liter V8 cars for the 1991 model year, not 1990. These replaced the finned wheels on the GT and the ten hole wheels on the LX 5.0 cars. The ten hole wheels then became a factory option on the LX four cylinder cars. Thanks for posting the video!

You could also get the hatchback in the 5.0 lx. I have an original, unmolested 92, black on black 5.0 hatchback lx. I've had it for 23 years and it's the best car I've ever had. I drove it daily for 10 of those years and it never let me down. I had to relocate the ignition module to the fender (like the t-bird) due to overheating but after that, it was dead on reliable. I still have it buried in the garage. Might need to pull it out of mothballs as these are becoming crazy popular again. cheers.

With 2.73s, it was a low 15 sec machine at best. 3.27s would allow 15 flat and maybe a 14.9. IIRC, the distributor boot also provided some suppression of radio interference. Pony wheels arrived in 1991. However…I’m interested to know the back story why one wouldn’t order the power package if they were going through the trouble of ordering an AOD with AC. Interesting car, and I always enjoy Steve’s videos. I just have a 91 in my garage and know waaay too much useless information about it.😅

Now if you picked up that same car with 5 speed and 3.08s from the factory they where low in the high 13’s stock, gears and a few mods you where in the 12s on a good tire. I currently own a black 93 GT 5 speed with the typical HCI gears etc, fun reliable car that makes all the right noises and can click off a high 11 second ET fairly consistent. Have a single turbo setup sitting on the shelf that will make it under the hood one of these years, but for now I just enjoy her as she sits
