This video was a fun one to make and took quite awhile getting all my sources figured out, but here it is!
The legend of the 1200Hp international diesel!
This engine truly is one of a kind, there is no other Idi engine that is even remotely close to this power scale and there likely never will be, it truly is a forgotten relic; oh, what we could learn if only we could get our hands on it!
Big thank you to ‪@ziptiesnbiasplies‬ for giving his two cents on the matter, when it comes to IDI’s if there is anyone who could smell BS, it would be him!
Here is a link to my sources and other channels used!

I am Tucker Jahns (TJahns), grandson of Bill Jahns (Dadiesel). She is still in the same spot as the photos, ole girl doesn’t deserve to be a ghost anymore and needs to be brought back to the world. My grandfather doesn’t even know the legend he has left with this IDI. I am here to provide relief that my brother and I are in the works of planning to bring it back to life. Edit: called my dad, we have sheets and video, and I guess it clocked 1250 hp actually, very accurate information my father says you have researched.

Im a mechanical Design Engineer that has worked for Remington Arms, Amazon, UPS, FedEx, and others. I'd be interested in taking each part of this build, and fully drawing all the custom pieces in CAD, producing the manufacturing prints for you to start making parts. All I ask is I get a set of parts to put a PPump on one of my idi's, and run at least a single turbo. Also, what size head studs did this engine get? Surely not the stock 1/2. I wonder how big you can machine the block for head studs. 1250hp would need some crazy clamping power to keep those heads on and gaskets from poppin!

I know it isn't an IDI, but a guy I used to work for spent a small fortune building 2 7.3s converted to direct injection. They were built for a powerboat, and made over 1000hp when turned up. He kept them at 700hp for reliability. I spent weeks building manifolds.

Interesting to think about how re-discovering and documenting this monster IDI may effect the aftermarket. There's likely some old engineering tricks in there that have been all but lost to time. Performance minded companies could copy some pages from that book for sure if there's anything in it like that, if they wanted.

That's so wild that you were able to find all this out. I remember back around 2010 when I bought my first IDI 7.3 reading forum post after forum post where people were all over the place about this engine and it's wild to think that there isn't say an OG engine sitting in a warehouse collecting dust because this would have been amazing to see as a display piece at a museum somewhere. I always thought the IDI was a good platform and it was amazing how much torque they developed. I remember going to an IDI meet up and seeing someone run one on a dyno and although they only made like 250-60HP they made nearly 800 foot pounds at the wheel....and considering a Cummins usually gets into the 350-400 mark for that amount of torque I found it surprising.

Im by no means an expert on this topic and many others, but I would say. In my opinion the motor could have likely had around the 1000hp mark if it indeed ran low 10s and high 9s in the 1/4 mile. Like I said, im no engineer. But given the shape of the f100 and any truck for that matter, you need to be pushing serious power on the top end given the drag coefficient of any truck. And my best guess would also be they didnt have any fancy nascar ducting and such under the car to help out with drag. So if it did run the speculated drag times, I dont think it would be totally unrealistic at all for IDI to be pushing around 1000+.

One of my brothers had a beautiful 88 F350, 4x4 reg cab with a turbo diesel, he added a bigger turbo and injectors to he used to tow wooden boats he built all around the North East with ease. With a 5 speed manual transmission, using 3:55 gears he was able to squeeze 24 mpg just cruising around and 18 towing. Using a 3” exhaust through one big muffler. While he didn’t build this for racing, but towing boats as easily as possible in the most efficient way possible. I went on many of the trips, and was the only other person he would let drive, seeing I was a CDL tractor trailer driver. The thing I remember most was exhaust temps were so high I advised him to add a pyrometer, to help keep track, because there was so much power he never had any need to downshift on most Interstate hyw we traveled, except running across the Kancamagus in NH. With little to no smoke. Just for sits and giggles I’d love to tow a boat like that with a new F350 reg cab 4x4 with the HO 6.7 diesel, of course there’s no manual transmission but a 10 speed automatic, it would be interesting, one thing I know from an owner is in now way will you get 18-24 mpg with one.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve heard about this motor. I remember reading on it a number of years ago. It’s cool to see you resurrect it! Hypermax most likely did it because they could. Back then they were one of only a handful of companies that had the ability to make such a Frankenstein. If memory serves correct, these guys were big into tractor pulling long before they got into truck pulling, so they already knew how to make big power. My memory may be failing, but I also seem to remember that the fella who started Hypermax was a former IH engineer, so he knew the platforms as well. The story I remember reading on this motor is that someone approached Hypermax, and wanted to sh!t stomp everyone in truck pulling. Like you went on to say, the fella dominated and was promptly kicked off the circuit because his motor was so far ahead of the competition at the time

I have a 6.9 IDI apart on the bench right now, going .040" over. I chose this engine because they won't blow head gaskets, crack blocks or cranks like the 6.2/6.5 GM, drain your wallet like a Cummins, Powerstroke or Duramax, and get reasonable fuel economy for what they are in an all mechanical diesel. If looking for HP one should probably start somewhere else though.

The 9L was a slightly revised version (or possibly the automotive version) of what was originally the DV-550 V8 IDI diesel. They were used in a couple IH tractors (1468 & 1568, and were rated at something like 140 hp, if memory serves) but were not very successful. The 9L was more commonly found in busses and other medium duty trucks. Also not known for much in the way of HP, but reliable and fuel efficient. The DV-550 did have a big brother, the DV-800 that IH used in at least one big 4WD Ag tractor (I think the model was 4768) and rated at around 300 hp.
@kosachukorganicfarms
@kosachukorganicfarms 5 ай бұрын
The 9L was a revised DV550. 550s we're not turbocharged. I've been told that when you turbo them and work em the bottom end gets weak and it'll drop the crank out the bottom. There was a larger line of international V8s that included the DV 573 and DV 800. The 573 and 800 were mostly used in heavy trucks. A lot of 800s also went in construction equipment and 4586 and 4786 tractors.

Interesting backstory on this thing. I do have to wonder why they kept it an IDI for a power build though. Even ported out those prechambers become a hell of a bottleneck, and direct injected diesels weren't a new tech even in the 80s. I'm working on building my own 7.3 right now, I have a 71 F250 built around it, and I'm putting the turbo up front like a 6.5. I've thought about cobbling together a Bosch MW pump as used on Perkins V8 diesels, but I don't think I'll be pushing anywhere near the limits of the DB2 pump. I don't plan on going past 250hp, I just want to be able to cross the Rockies without making them the Smokies.

I called up hypermax. Theyd throw a kit together for you to do this build. Said itd cost around 15-20k. Wouldnt include lines or engine internals. And youd have to have the pistons cut to reduce compression and expect to use several cans of ether to get it started.

IDI engines were capable of very high rpms without boost, the combustion system sped up the burning speed. The Mercedes IDI’s from the 90’s can make 200hp/liter

Thanks for the free rep man. In terms of the rest, I think we all know that the Jahns truck wasn't even close to 1200hp. Number one, the weakest link after head studs is the connecting rods. At best in 94, you had factory turbo IDI units, and they are plenty stout (right alongside forged 7.3 PSD units), but they aren't doing 1200hp. Secondary, ported IDI heads flow less than stock units (not that that's a big deal when you're pushing 100+ boost into it), because of the port velocity, the engine doesn't make power past 3000rpm. I've personally made peak power at 3300RPM N/A but that's because N/A doesn't make any airflow down low... Regardless... The legend most likely made ~700hp, and shit rods, not the block. Cast iron doesn't flex and spit out freeze plugs, it cracks and breaks. Either way, cool video.

Took every thing from 6.9 and put it onto the 7.3 ats intake and 3 inch gartit turbo. Injuction pump. Exsts wire harns. Fly wheel. It was a ripper wish i never got rid of it. Runing about 11 lb of boost. It lived on the hill so i ran red deslie in it. Dule tanks to.

Hypermax was a pioneer in tractor pulling and Diesel technology, it could have easily made such power. While tractor puller love too boast, hypermax was very familiar with IH as they were the pioneers in hyping up IHs pulling tractors especially the 466. Hypermax could make any custom part they wanted when they wanted even if everything in this engine was one off. Mechanical diesels can be absolute monsters and there’s plenty of 5.9 Cummins and tractor engines making well over 1k horsepower. 1200hp is very achievable with a twin turbo mechanical diesel that is running an inline pump, at that point the fuel system is just a controlled fuel leak into the combustion chamber. The thing is no one is building IDIs like this or has ever built another IDI like this so many people won’t believe it but at the end of the day it’s the same fuel system as a Super Stock pulling tractor shoved onto a pickup v8. There’s people running ppump swapped powerstrokes making this much power. It’s not out of the realm of possibility once you consider the factors and the fact that Hypermax had whatever they wanted at their disposal. For example look at Gale banks. He can build a Duramax with whatever he wants in a completely custom manner and run tests all day swapping parts and changing factors in a manner that can’t be replicated. A 1200hp IDI isn’t a far fetched idea, the IDI just didn’t catch on as a performance engine like tractor engines or the cummins and it wasnt marketed as such either. It was a decently powered NA V8 diesel that could keep up with a big block and get decent fuel mileage. Cummins jumped onto the pickup scene with a reputation of bullet proof,and at the time high powered engines, coming from a long history of Ag and Trucking. Tractor pulling was popular long before truck pulling ever was and that’s where Hypermax started off

I think if you put 147 psi through an engine of that displacement and you can feed it enough fuel to compensate for that amount of air, it's gonna make that kind of horsepower no problem. Would it live very long at that power level? I don't know. Maybe they did that once, blew it up, then dialed it back, but still, it had to have made a lot of power regardless if it's tearing the block apart repeatedly like that.
@sethk1429

@@infernoking7504You would need a different cylinder head as well as different pistons. Trying to run a DI cylinder head with practically flat IDI pistons would make your compression ratio way too high, and the pistons would probably smack the glow plugs and injector nozzles as well.
@Leemur2335
@Leemur2335 5 ай бұрын
Yes but you would have to change the cylinder heads, injectors, and pistons at the bare minimum in order to make it work. With a 6.9 or 7.3 IDI you would need fully custom cylinder heads built in order to continue utilizing the injection pump fuel system. 7.3 powerstroke pistons would probably work in a 7.3 IDI but you might need custom connecting rods. The Volkswagen AAZ engine is IDI and can be converted into DI by using the pistons, cylinder head, and injectors from a 1Z TDI engine.
