Fun car, at least something different. You forgot to mention that things like the cheap plastics, stick out windows in the back etc were done on purpose to keep the car as light as possible. It only weighs a ton. I know people who own one of these and they're extremely fuel efficient, even the petrol ones. Better milage than Citroën claims even. Fun review, keep it up!

I daily drive a Citroen C6, really nice and soft ride and quite reliable imo. And the design holds on to this day. But I still miss my old XM, haven't driven anything more comfortable than my old XM. And it is a shame that Citroen doesn't offer the hydropneumatic suspension anymore. Will buy something else when the time comes to decide if I keep my C6 for weekend drives or sell it.

I'm with you on this Matt. It's a fun, quirky little car. I've driven a couple while the wife's Grand C4 Picasso has been serviced (if you have kids you'll understand...😄). It's a holiday of a car that bounces down to the beach on a summer's day, no frills, wine and beer in the back. Spirit of 2CV. Not to mention that suspension on crappy roads - amazing. PS I was ready to hate Citroens but ours has been genuinely flawless and perfect for the job of child wrangling. 🤔

My family got quite excited about the Cactus around 3 years ago, I was mainly excited about the side bumps protecting the door from getting destroyed on the local supermarket and underground city parkings, which in Spain in pretty much guaranteed. So we went to our local Citroen dealer in Fuengirola to test drive it. It was the 1.2 Pure Tech engine, 82 hp. We did fit in there, the space was not bad, the design interesting, certainly original and different from most on the market. The trouble is the car was only sort of ok for a city traffic, it just wouldn't go anywhere uphill, it seriously lacked power. I was flooring it on a slightly inclined motorway and it was barely maintaining the speed of about 115-120 km/h. The problem is that version was the only one with a reasonable price of about 12,500 euros. Reasonable for a funny budget subcompact car with almost no extras, not even alloy wheels. The stronger 1.2 turbo version of 110 hp or a 100 hp diesel one costed 4.500-5.000 € more and it just didn't make much sense to me to spend that much money on this funny looking, but still a plastic and budget car with a regular low ground clearence, not a crossover, as the salesman was trying to suggest, haha. I went for a second hand Honda... But I admit the I gen Cactus is attractive to look at and can definitely be a good option for a city car.

I completely agree with you about french cars and there counterparts in the intro, but I will say the peugeot 406 has always held a sweet spot in my heart, my grandad had one for his taxi rounds and it never failed him, it was just humble, got the job done, reliable, comfortable, and funny enough, he had to get rid of it coz he was starting to breakdown physically! (Of old age of course) I especially loved the front end styling, it was very bold and aggressive for a 2000 peugeot saloon. I'd have to say that after this era, peugeot became a bit iffy and their reputation got a bit hindered, however now they seem to be pulling back, or have been for a few years if I'm not wrong especially with that gorgeous 508 which has set the design language for the whole of peugeot

I had a 1.6 diesel. Got recalled 3 times. 1 was emissions failure. 1 was engine warning light. 1 was adblue tank was leaking. However. Touch screen was slow, alot of noise once you go over 70mph. Pop out rear windows sucks in the summer time. Heater takes 10mins ish to get going. One cup holder only in the front, and its awkwardly shaped. A few odd storage facilites around the car which were awkwardly shaped or stupidly angled. Gear stick was flimsy, rear seats were annoying if you had a 3rd passenger and you had items etc. But... and i reply but... I would get another one. Yes. Fun car to drive, spacious, very common on the roads today. Styling, roof racks, mpg, interior, uniqueness. Its a brill french car with personality.

I must admit to having a soft spot for Citroens. We had a Citroen Xsara Picasso a while ago. I bought a Citroen Zantia from the block for £75, it was rock hard on the suspension a bit like when the airbags go on a Range Rover. Turned out to be the lever was seized in the middle of the centre console. Gave it a good yank & it sorted it out. I kept it for years and it never let us down as a family car. The ride was plush to which was great and loads of room. Not all French cars are crap, not for £75 anyway lol.

@bonzobanana1
@bonzobanana1 3 жыл бұрын
@@w3villz425 The reliability index is based on the frequency of warranty repairs for cars and uses 100s of thousands of cars to create that data, their is no bias or opinion just pure data. You should never compare your own individual experience based on a few cars because that would be ridiculous. I think up to about the 90s German cars were very reliable 2nd only to Japanese but they seem to have fallen a long way back now. Remember there was a time when British cars were very reliable but around the 60s or 70s with the rising value of the pound and union issues the quality dropped a lot. Japanese cars still prioritise high engineering standards with tight tolerances which is why they still remain the best quality cars. It should also be pointed out the sort of cars that sell into the UK that are German are more likely to be higher end performance and luxury cars which tend to be a lot more complicated both electrically and with regard the engine. If you keep to a small Volkswagen with a simple engine and a manual gearbox it's probably going to be pretty reliable. Again the reliabilityindex is a good source of reliability data for buying s/hand cars it gives both frequency of failure and expected repair costs. Sometimes with German cars its not just the reliability but the ridiculous repair costs sometimes up to 2 or 3x the cost of similar cars. You combine a car 2x as likely to have a fault and 2x as expensive to fix and that is 4x the costs and likely general servicing costs are more expensive too.
@bonzobanana1
@bonzobanana1 3 жыл бұрын
@Lord Rupert I don't think you are wrong whenever I see some local story about reckless overtaking causing an accident its either a white van or one of the German marques often it seems to combine both so they were both overtaking at the same time and hit each other. Also I watch many cycling videos and you often see cyclists showing reckless drivers overtaking them with no clearance and again its the German marques. Only yesterday coming back from Weymouth to Yeovil a BMW was overtaking when the overtaking lane had ended and he just sneaked back into the correct lane with not much clearance with regard cars coming the other way. Occasionally you see a very good driver in a German marque car but that is the exception that makes the rule. It's really about how German cars are marketed as status symbols for badge snobs so the type of person obsessed with his own importance is much more likely to buy one. My motivation is a nice car that is well made and reliable plus very practical that costs the minimum amount of money to keep on the road. I'm like you I pretty much assume a owner of a German marque is going to be some sort of low grade human being with little consideration for others and puts the safety of others at risk.

Unfortunately the Citroen C3 I had at the time blew it's head gasket TWICE in six months (main dealer services & repaired too) and put me off the brand for life. Came back to visit this video and I bought a Cactus. Not to replace the family Skoda but replace my Rover 75, I bought the basic Touch Model which meant it came with wheel trims, no air con, no Bluetooth or phone set up, but you know what I can forgive it as it's a quirky car, I love the pop out windows, I love the fact it has cruise control, a rear spoiler and what appears to be tinted back window, I even managed to find a set of cactus alloys and tyres for £250! I recently took it to the Motorist for the Furious Driving Social and it kept up with my mate in his diesel V40 on the twisty roads in the English and Scottish borders in a straight line it lacked the power and hills are it's nemesis. Funny thing was I was not looking for a Cactus at the time I was looking at a C1 or a Citigo and stumbled upon it. I mentioned I hate touch screens well I still do but with it being the base model you can turn the radio on and then put the heating controls setting over it and it's simple to use.

I had a Berlingo with that semi-automatic transmission. It was hateful, it was like a learner driver changing gears. The clutch started juddering at 70k and went completely at 90k and took four days to change. Also, the front suspension was made of chocolate. Numerous ball joints and bushes plus the shocks were done at 60k (compared to my current Skoda Octavia with only shock absorbers changed in 170k). Eventually the small tank which contained the (expensive) PAT fluid for the DPF sprung a leak and led to it being unable to regenerate. So finally at 140k it was gone.

Yup, I have a 2010 C5 (Mk3 X7, 163 bhp model) 2.0 hdi VTR+ tourer. Magnificent on long journeys, great for towing and loads of space. My Diesel engine has been good throughout apart from one point where two of my diesel injectors needed recoding, and the dreaded hdi 2.0 drive belt pulley wheel needed replacing, due to the common fault of the rubber damper drying out and rattling. It’s started first time every time and get great economy for a big car. It’s just on 82k, had a dual mass fly wheel and clutch (lasted pretty well as they go). It’s service every year, not just at the 20 odd k miles that the book suggests. The things I didn’t expect to have challenges with: 3 replacement front window mechanisms to date, so many popped headlight bulbs I can’t keep count. Failed folding wing mirrors (operate sporadically when they feel like it - apparently a common problem with the door controllers), failed door seal rubber at 45k, new steering rack due to yet another common problem of corrosion where the steering column meets the rack. 3 washer pumps, 1 rear centre break light led unit at just under 50k. Satnav works well, though sometimes loses its bearings so system needs an occasional reset. It loves to request a new battery every three years (thank god it doesn’t need coding). The car itself is a comfortable cruiser, loads of space inside, dashboard like a space shuttle.... so many buttons to press! Massive boot space and pretty long. Great for towing with, you don’t know you’ve got a van on the back of it though there’s plenty of power on this engine version. Get 45mpg average, so does well on fuel. It’s standard suspension so can be a bit wallow in the curves, but it’s an ok compromise for road comfort. It’s doing well on it’s engine, nothing to complain about in that regard. Interior is not bad, feels decent quality and not so plastic like. I’ve had fords most of my driving life, a Volvo and a Citroen Xantia back in the day. To date, I’ve never spent as much repairing a car as I have on this one in all my driving life, and have to say I’d never touch another Citroen despite personally finding it an ok drive. I cannot tolerate repeatedly repairing things, and parts are astronomically expensive. One dealership actually told me get rid of a Citroen at 60k, they are just not worth the hassle after that point as they are too expensive to repair for their value. Wise words indeed. It just so happened that I couldn’t find another car quickly when needing repairs, so stuck with it for the major money spent. Despite their appeal in some respects, I wouldn’t touch another with a barge pole. I’ve never had as many issues with my previous motors, and certainly haven’t cost as much. Sorry to say it, but Citroen’s generally are as cheap in brand new production as they are to buy second hand. 😕

Yes, I owned a 106 diesel ( '96 reg ) for 4 years. It had about the same miles on as yours when I bought it for £400 on eBay. The only things it needed in that time were a few suspension bushes, and a water pump. Great little car, till someone skidded into me in snow. Insurance co gave me a courtesy car fo 10 days, an almost brand new Aygo. Power steering, a/c ... etc. lets you know the difference of 15 years in the designs. But the 106..., simple direct injection diesel, super.... Wonder what the C4 Cactus will be like at 10 years old.

Excellent video and just what I needed as changing my Mercedes 350e for a more economic Catus, besides having owned my Mercedes’ for 18 months I’ve realised it’s not the car for me, as servicing and parts make your eyes water and it’s not that much fun to drive either. I much preferred my old Citreon DS5 or my Renault Laguna Coupe and guess what I had no problems with them in the combined 7 years I owned them. Really like French cars very under rated.

Body roll is a safety feature. It doesn't reduce the car's max. cornering speed by much but it slows the driver down a lot. My first car was a Citroën Visa which I usually drove gently - until the day when I spotted a very tight bend too late. Yet despite an impressive body roll, the car took me around the corner safely - at a speed I hadn't thought possible. 👍👍

I remember fondly all my 2CVs i had , my dad loved them . He had like 8 or 9 in his life , even after he went for something else he still had a 2CV as a second car. Man cornering was "something else " in 2CV, and overtaking was only for people with balls as big as watermelons , especially if you had to overtake a lorry .

@iangibson6015 3 жыл бұрын
@@idimidodjimi6760 I agree about the overtaking. I remember an advert for the 2CV that said "Like a Rolls Royce, the 2CV has 4 wheels. The 2CV is faster than a Ferrari if it is doing 50 mph and the Ferrari is doing 40 mph" or something like that...

Thanks for an informative and humorous video. I have to buy a used car now after my Stilo finally put a rear coil spring through the suspension arm. The car has served me well for 14 plus years (2004 registered and bought in 2007). So now im in the market for another car. My head says a Toyota Auris Touring Sport (I actually like the CVT) but my heart says a petrol Cactus. I know Citroen do not have a good reliability record but my partner has a 2008 C3 diesel and it’s been great. I would very much appreciate your thoughts on the reliability side of things and cost of repairs if it does need some work. Lastly, I was thinking of going for a 2017 model but wonder if it may be wiser to spend less and get a low mileage older model. Thanks again for the videos. I watched your one on 10 most reliable used cars for under £5k and was not surprised to learn that all but one was from the Far East!

I’ve now got a Berlingo van, the second I’ve owned. I’m with you on going for the quirky ones. Having had an Escort, a few Cavaliers and a Volvo V50, I’d go for quirky French any day. If you didn’t have to deal with AlfaRomeo dealerships I’d buy my third Alfa tomorrow ( I cried when I px’d my 1st 156 for a Renault Scenic when the kids demanded more bootspace) but they aren’t ever having another penny from me.

I currently have a BMW E46 325i M-sport, which is a really good all around car, but i've been thinking about selling that and replace it with two cars since I have the space for it. One that's focused on comfort and low running costs to drive to work with, and one with a more sporty focus. The comfort and average fuel consumption (they did a lot to save weight) of the Cactus makes that a strong candidate for me as a daily driver. For the sporty one I would right now really like to have an Alfa Romeo 156 GTA, which has the Busso V6. Now, both Alfa and Citroën are know for breaking down, but so are old BMWs, so I'm used to that haha.

We have a pre-facelift Cactus, diesel, 100PS, manual gearbox. That's the right variant to have. It is a very basic car and yet very comfortable. Quirky but not too much. Performance is satisfactory, though not much fun around the bend. fuel consumption is brilliant (5.5-5L/100KM in heavy traffic, can do 4L/100KM in relaxed intercity rides). We bought it as new and currently it is standing at 155,000KM with only routine maintenance.
