Most reliable car I've owned, I have clocked up 231 thousand miles in the 15 years I've owned it with just routine services. The best journey I had in it was a trip to Germany a few years ago, and had the chance to let it stretch its horses on the autobahn it just touched 150mph and maintained it for miles.

@@alextilson5809 In Germany the max speed is limited to 250 km/h, most cars are even limited electronicaly at that speed, but in some parts and some times when there's no working on the roads and no aditional speed limits, usualy police choose to ignore most of the cars that are speeding over 250 kmh, but not all and not every time. And the story was about 160 mph so 257.49, not much over the limit. Back to subject, XJR is looking like a 6 out of 10, and XJ series 3 is still looking 12 ot of 10 and is the most gorgeous ever forever.

I was 19 years old in 1989 and I was driving a 1974 Series 2 Jaguar XJ6 4.2 in midnight blue. I absolutely adored that car however it was an early British Leyland model which meant I drove it at all times with one eye on the fuel gauge and the other eye on the oil pressure gauge. Being a British Leyland car it kicked me in the balls and emptied my wallet at every opportunity, 2 head gaskets, water pump, 2 fuel pumps and a replacement engine, not to mention the fact that it chewed its way through Pirelli P6 tyres like a toddler with a tube of smarties. Having said all that it was still a Jaaaggg and the ride was superb and the acceleration was impressive, even by 1989 standards. My friends were driving 1.2ltr Vauxhall Novas with wind down windows and I had leather seats, power steering, electric windows and a huge grin on my face. I had two more XJ6”s over the years but they never felt as special as the first. I see Series 2’s from the 70’s pop up on Autotrader every now and then for strong money and I’m almost tempted to re-live my youth until I remember the pain and financial ruin of owning a British Leyland Jaguar 😂😂

gaffnaldo1 I worked on Jaguars in the seventies and eighties and it's always been a problem with XJs eating suspension bushes also front wheel bearings were a problem on the 308s, probably something to do with Ford thinking that using a Mondeo rear bearing on the front of an XJ with all the extra loads and stresses was a good idea.

It has 4 cup holders & since it's the 2.7 TDVi 6 speed model, I'm getting 45mpg Around Town. On top of that there's a special place to put the Cocodcomol & Werthers Originals.

I'm happy to see another X308 XJR is preserved. I have a 1999 XJR and I agree the electrical gremlins are annoying but if you replaced all the ground straps and battery leads most issues go away. However you are right, you need to drive these 1-2 times a week, VERY sensitive to voltage.

Fantastic job on keeping a timeless Classic on the road!! Did the same with a S-type 3.0 that needed new subframe and new sills. The rest was great condition. I did RVS treatment on it in the engine, gearbox, diff and Servo so now it averages 30+ and nearly 40 on a run. There’s something about Jaguar that is very special, soft and comfy but still sporty, fantastic in the bends. I wish style and class went into fashion again.

An excellent review by someone who truly understands the car. Since I was 17 I've owned almost every model Jaguar from the 1950s on up to 1999. Currently have a 98 XJ-R, a 99 XJ-R and a 99 XK-8. I totally agree that the X308 is the absolute most beautiful of the last 40 years or so. My 72 XJ-6 short w.b. would be a close second to me. One other maintenance item that is very important (from personal experience): The rubber oil cooler lines. I strongly suggest changing them pre-emptively, as that failure could easily destroy the engine just like the tensioners. I couldn't find new lines, so I had a hydraulics outfit remove the old rubber hoses and replace them, held on very securely with hose clamps instead of crimp fittings. Cost only $40 after r & r'ing them. Every moment driving any of mine is a moment to smile and actually feel at one with the automobile. That applies to every Jaguar I've ever owned (10 and counting).

I can relate to your article. Our first Jag was a black 2000 XJR, wow. But after a couple of years and at 134K miles, I thought we would have to invest in upgrades, or best bet might be to buy a newer and low mileage XJR. Found a silver 2003 XJR in Dallas, TX with 27K miles. Flew to Dallas, drove it home to New Hampshire - March of 2013. Still have it, and a '96 XJ12, and a 2008 XKR Portfolio. Love them all, and all are different. Vanity license plates are very popular here so the XJR was, and now the XKR is 'BADKTTY'. We get lots of comments on the Jag. I've owned a lot of cars, the '08 XKR is easily the best car ever, and the 2003 XJR is right behind it - and it has heated seats, cupholders, and steering wheel moves in and out as well as up and down.

What a car. We had two, the first we had for 6 years before being wiped out in a head on collision with some M3 wanker overtaking on a blind hill keeping everyone safe getting seatbelt brusies whereas the guy was cut out of the BMW. Not a single issue was had with either one both were dealer maintained. Got my brother to hospital in 16 minutes in what was a 40minute journey. Rapid and composed and such a comfortable ride. We sold it to my uncle as my dad got an XFR instead which he kept for years until my cousin got t-bonned which he walked away from much to the police’s surprise.

"Grace Pace and Space" Well OK on everything but space - the 308 platform was never good on space to be honest especially if you were over 6ft tall and was a tad cramped in the back (unless you had the extended version) But having said that I had few problems with mine but there were a few issues with rust - door frames, sills, front wings and also a sagging headliner took their toll on my wallet and eventually it failed its MOT on a number of issues that I simply could not afford to fix so it went on its way. I replaced it with a LPG converted "normal" XJ8 (executive) and never looked back for almost 8 years of trouble free driving only being sold as it was basically too low to get in and out of with a sore back. Someday I'll get another just for the fun of it :)

Such fabulous cars, these X308's, especially the R. Jaguar is up there with my favorite makes of car, as there is no one else who, time after time, gets the mix of ride, performance and great, yet understated style so right. As much as I do like the current XJ, these older ones look so nice, and they've aged really well, they don't look at all dated. In terms of "modern" Jags, if I could afford one of these R's, preferably a black XJR100, and an XJ81 6.0, I'd be a very happy man. Unfortunately, with the county, even World, being as is, at present, I couldn't even afford to fill one with fuel! One day though.

I have two Xj8 Vanden Plas sedans, a 2001 and a 2002. Bought them both in 2013. Looked for a year. The first one arrived from across the country (Richmond, VA...I live in California), and I thought it had a serious engine problem when it arrived. While my mechanic was investigating, another one came up for sale that was local and a stunner...looked like it had never been sat in or driven and was that beautiful titanium grey. Turned out the first Jag was fine....so I decided to keep both, and just as the gentleman in this video says, he smiles every time he drives his, I'm the same way. My mechanics in Pasadena, CA...Pasadena Motor Cars...are absolute experts at Jags and keep my cars perfect. They're also very reasonable in what they charge, amazing at sourcing hard to find parts, and 100% scrupulous. So I have two Jags and everything on them works! What a concept! Love the design and the way they waft down the highway.

Thanks for an excellent review. I had a 2000 year XJR like this (still have it but not on road unfortunately). I previously had S reg but not supercharged. The XJR is beautifully quiet to drive until you open it up and then it's a fantastic refined roaring lion. Really loved my one, not cheap to run, but the last of the true Jaguars ever made. After posting the first part of my comment in 2020, my son and I decided to get the XJR back on the road. We’ve spent just over a year on it and we have replaced fuel pumps, new lamda sensor, ABS wheel sensor and fixed main ABS pump (needed pcb soldering), “A Frame” removed new bushes installed and repainted and new MAS meter as it was giving crazy air-flow rates without throwing a fault code; we discovered it as it wouldn’t properly accelerate past 3500rpm. Also replaced top Accelerator cable as stretched and was only giving 81% opening. We also added new window seals all round from secondhand doors we purchased. The only work we didn’t do personally was welding of the front footwells and sills. The car has around 111k miles although the engine only has around 60k as it was replaced in late 2003 because of the Nikasil bore issue. Last month the car passed it’s MOT and is now happily back on the road. We only last week replaced the top throttle cable (they stretch) and according to our ELM327 we were only getting 81% of full throttle opening. The car is now driving beautifully and both my son and I are absolutely loving it and intending to do further restoration work on it over time as we will never sell it. They are stunning vehicles which are easy and docile to drive normally, but open the engine up and the power and sweet noise of the Eaton Supercharger is intoxicating.

Great footage and review on a great car 👍😁 I bought mine back in 2003 from the first owner and have been driving it since then without any major problems. Never had any of the described issues to deal with except for the headlining. No mechanical failure, no rust, the paint and interior still in perfect condition. I will definitely keep this masterpiece of British design and engineering in my collection and keep on enjoying its smooth, comfortable and nevertheless sporty ride 😊 If you like, you can learn more about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaiqd5RmnJismtU

I have a 3.2l XJ8 and I love it. It's the only car I've drive where you can drive 200 miles and feel more relaxed when you get out of it than when you got in. My wife nags me to get rid of it but, although it has cost me a lot to bring it up to standard, it's worth its weight in gold in getting rid of the stresses of day to day life. You would think that a car weighing 2 tons wouldn't go around corners but it does, it's fantastically balanced and planted in all weathers. It's a challenge to drive, in that you have to be firm with it to get the best from it, but I love it.

Nice to see some more youtube content on the Jag X308 XJR. Yours looks stunning in that colour. I would agree with more or less everything you said, although for me, I get about 21 mpg (7.43km/l) combined and never ever more than 25 mpg (8.85km/l) on a run. I use mine as my daily car, and I just can't compare it to anything. Nothing looks like it as the X308 was the last of the XJs to have a really low roof line compared to most modern cars. The X350 just doesn't look elegant at all and is a fair bit taller (though it benefits in other areas such as having aluminium construction). Obviously, the X308 isn't really practical when you consider how long it is; the cabin is pretty snug but I love it. Looks incredible, effortless power, superb ride/handling balance. Probably the best car I've owned.

I love my XJ350. She's a 2006 V8 Sovereign that's spotless inside. She's got some age marks on the paintwork, a few stone chips etc but I get so many comments about her. The shape is increasingly rare it seems and so many people seem to hold the old XJ's in a really high regard. The drive is exceptional, and even driving to and from work every day in stop start traffic I average 24.8 mpg.

A great review of a motoring legend xj40, x308 and the x350 were coming to the end of the real proper jag's with the XJR being the most desirable of these body shapes after the x350 all the family resemblance was lost along with prestige mark of the jag and now we have the F pace it's game over.

Awesome review, very honest but you really capture the enthusiasm. Somebody once said a Jaguar is like the bloke sitting in the corner of the pub supping real ale with a flat cap on his head. He's quiet, relaxed and inoffensive - but if there's any aggro he can beat the living daylights out of anybody who tries to take him on. Such is the XJR. I had a 1996 X-306 XJR (the four litre six cylinder) and absolutely LOVED the car. Brilliant mile muncher and so comfortable yet very wieldy. It only cost me £1k... totally amazing VFM. At that age the downside is, as you say, the ongoing bills to keep the car in good order. I also lived with the sagging headliner, never got around to replacing it. Eventually I sold mine to somebody in the trade who could keep up the repairs needed. Miles per gallon were poor, but the smiles per gallon were off the scale!
