The gear lever on a modern auto is only a switch lever sending signals to an ECU; all the manual work is done by solenoids and servos. So, you can't wear out the gearbox dodad thingamijig flange by holding the gear lever switch.

I have to say. Having spent a considerable amount of my upbringing in Africa where the roads weren't so great, these are everyday cars and they make alot of sense. But in Britain, they are an odd car to own unless you need a workhorse. The running costs thanks to fuel prices aren't great whereas in Africa it's not unheard of to get diesel at just over 80p per litre if not cheaper.

Bit of additional info... all the v6 engines in these are mechanically identical, they just run different maps. So buy any power level v6 and get a simple remap from somewhere like darkside, and you’ll have 300bhp. If you look hard enough you can find these with rear lockers. Worth having.

I had two Amaroks, the rear seats were I’m told not very comfy. Sold the second one when diesel-gate happened and it came back from a service and the MPG had dropped considerably. The dealer plugged it in to do a software update, and I’m convinced VW retro downgraded the car to lessen the sh1t storm coming their way.
@mvubu6823

How could the MPG possibly change? You put fuel in and get miles out. Software doesn't have anything to do with it, unless you just didn't compute your fuel spend

@@mvubu6823 Of course software factors in on any modern car. Do you have any idea how much software and computing goes into a modern engine. The ECU controls how much is injected, throttle response, power output, timing, ignition etc. Unplug the ECU on your car and see how it runs without it.
@freibier
@freibier 2 жыл бұрын
@@mvubu6823 Of course software has something to do with it. Especially with the VW Diesel scandal. They had software which recognized when the car was being tested for emissions and ran the car with a different engine map (which meant less performance and fuel efficiency, but also less emissions). Later, they removed that cheat, so even in normal driving, you had less emissions and less performance/efficiency. So it could very well be that once your car went to the dealer after the emissions scandal went public, that you got your car back with worse fuel efficiency if they removed the cheat via a software update. In fact, that is exactly what was reported in German car magazines by people who had the software update done on their cars.

Would something like adding Redex Diesel system cleaner in each regular diesel fill up do the same job? It would be a quarter of the price.

My main gripe with the Amarok is that it's built in that bastion of quality vehicle manufacturing, Argentina. Which means the build quality is at best shaky. I have less of an issue with buying a ute made in Argentina than I do with paying made in Germany prices for the same ute. A friend who runs his own electrical contracting business bought a brand new Amarok last year, and the rear door handle came off in his hand the day he got it home. The following day the rear courtesy light fell out. It's had a CEL on the dash for 2 months that VW keep resetting but not actually fixing, and Apple Carplay works as and when it feels like it. By comparison, my 2020 Mitsubishi Triton (L200 in the UK) hasn't had so much as an oil top up despite doing about 40000kms more.
@highlandmalt6368

Can't comment on your region, which I'm guessing is Australia. But they are made in Hanover, Germany for the UK market and I've found build to be extremely good, and in line with what I expect from VW group vehicles. The only fault on the 2 of them I've had (2027 & 2018 models) is a NOX sensor failure at 45,000 miles, which was sorted under warranty.

@@highlandmalt6368 Yes, we don't tend to get the same vehicles as Europe, which makes the ridiculous prices we pay for German cars even more of a joke. Our BMW 3 series and Merc C class cars are built in South Africa. Our Audi A4s are built in China and India. Yet we pay way more (usually 30-40% more) for them than you pay for the equivalent German-built cars sold in Europe.

G'day, I've got one and it is good for long trips. 2400km in 24 hours, 2 drivers. long range fuel tank, Bull Bar and lots of good lights. It is lousy when you need a VW dealer and the closest one is 900km each way. I have the fancy "sports bar" and it is the dumbest idea for a tray addition. It blocks access and you cannot tie rope's onto it.

Love the Amarok I really wish the classifications for pick-up trucks were changed. My understanding is that ALL are commercial vehicles. You can buy van based MPVs to benefit from the lower cost and huge room. I wish you had similar with pick ups where you have to have the canopy on the back for civvy use and have one removed for business.

We have a 2016 Ford Ranger at work and I hate the thing. It is crude and uncomfortable to drive with bouncy suspension. It is hard work to load anything into the back of it because of the load floor height and limited space. It has 4 wheel drive but we have absolutely no need to go off road. The 4 wheel drive lacks a limited slip diff so it is hopeless on tarmac but we never need to go offroad anyway so all that extra hardware is essentially useless ballast. However, that problem is rather academic as the hire contract it is on, would you believe, actually forbids us from taking it off road.

We have two 68 plate 3.0 V6 diesels. One is sat in Martin's VW awaiting a new engine as VW are disputing the warranty claim as it didn't have its first service before the fault developed. The second was repaired under warranty having had its first service, yet another new engine. So what was the fault, basically failed DPF regen cycles on both vehicles caused the injector seals to break and leak diesel into the oil. Not impressed by these and don't count on the VW warranty. Two sister vehicles, one they repaired the other we are forking out 6800 for to get it back on the road.

Never been a fan of how pick ups drive but have only driven two. 1 Nissan nivana and Ford ranger. Nissan was some crappy base spec with a manual gearbox which I didn't like. The ranger Apple car play and Automatic gearbox which made the experience not soo bad

Mmmmmmmmm, my first experiences with the Amarok was being driven from Rio Gallegos to Cabo Virgenes and back, sitting in the back. Not a great experience, apart from the team I was travelling with and the mate (local "tea") that was shared around. It is not very comfortable on the gravel roads but then again, it is not a Range Rover (mine was quite comfortable on the gravel :)). Note: they did have an issue with wheel studs breaking at some point. So worth checking if that is still an issue.

The amount the prices of these have shot up now, might as well get a Touareg if all you need is space and a big towing capacity.

Stick ten wet working dogs in the back of your touareg for one shooting season and it wont be worth Jack shit. They are not a great car, difficult to work out of, but they have there place .

I reckon every Amarok I've seen is in that same electric blue. I'd be interested to see a review of a newer generation Duster, Matt. I know you reviewed one a few years back now. I like these little videos.

To help with the DPF issues you can fit a catch can to your engine, this is a very common thing to do in the 4x4 fraternity in Australia, it help keep diesel engines cleaner for longer.

The best way to avoid DPF issues is to hook a trailer on it & head for a big hill.

Hilux is still king of the crop! In 15 years time the Hilux will still be running on its original engine, timing chain and gearbox where the Amarok will have had several mechanical overhauls.
