I have to say. Having spent a considerable amount of my upbringing in Africa where the roads weren't so great, these are everyday cars and they make alot of sense. But in Britain, they are an odd car to own unless you need a workhorse. The running costs thanks to fuel prices aren't great whereas in Africa it's not unheard of to get diesel at just over 80p per litre if not cheaper.
@kristoffscuba54663 жыл бұрын
Bit of additional info... all the v6 engines in these are mechanically identical, they just run different maps. So buy any power level v6 and get a simple remap from somewhere like darkside, and you’ll have 300bhp. If you look hard enough you can find these with rear lockers. Worth having.

I had two Amaroks, the rear seats were I’m told not very comfy. Sold the second one when diesel-gate happened and it came back from a service and the MPG had dropped considerably. The dealer plugged it in to do a software update, and I’m convinced VW retro downgraded the car to lessen the sh1t storm coming their way.

@@mvubu6823 Of course software factors in on any modern car. Do you have any idea how much software and computing goes into a modern engine. The ECU controls how much is injected, throttle response, power output, timing, ignition etc. Unplug the ECU on your car and see how it runs without it.
@freibier2 жыл бұрын
@@mvubu6823 Of course software has something to do with it. Especially with the VW Diesel scandal. They had software which recognized when the car was being tested for emissions and ran the car with a different engine map (which meant less performance and fuel efficiency, but also less emissions). Later, they removed that cheat, so even in normal driving, you had less emissions and less performance/efficiency. So it could very well be that once your car went to the dealer after the emissions scandal went public, that you got your car back with worse fuel efficiency if they removed the cheat via a software update. In fact, that is exactly what was reported in German car magazines by people who had the software update done on their cars.

My main gripe with the Amarok is that it's built in that bastion of quality vehicle manufacturing, Argentina. Which means the build quality is at best shaky. I have less of an issue with buying a ute made in Argentina than I do with paying made in Germany prices for the same ute. A friend who runs his own electrical contracting business bought a brand new Amarok last year, and the rear door handle came off in his hand the day he got it home. The following day the rear courtesy light fell out. It's had a CEL on the dash for 2 months that VW keep resetting but not actually fixing, and Apple Carplay works as and when it feels like it. By comparison, my 2020 Mitsubishi Triton (L200 in the UK) hasn't had so much as an oil top up despite doing about 40000kms more.
@highlandmalt63683 жыл бұрын
Can't comment on your region, which I'm guessing is Australia. But they are made in Hanover, Germany for the UK market and I've found build to be extremely good, and in line with what I expect from VW group vehicles. The only fault on the 2 of them I've had (2027 & 2018 models) is a NOX sensor failure at 45,000 miles, which was sorted under warranty.
@themancuniancandidate27443 жыл бұрын
@@highlandmalt6368 Yes, we don't tend to get the same vehicles as Europe, which makes the ridiculous prices we pay for German cars even more of a joke. Our BMW 3 series and Merc C class cars are built in South Africa. Our Audi A4s are built in China and India. Yet we pay way more (usually 30-40% more) for them than you pay for the equivalent German-built cars sold in Europe.

We have a 2016 Ford Ranger at work and I hate the thing. It is crude and uncomfortable to drive with bouncy suspension. It is hard work to load anything into the back of it because of the load floor height and limited space. It has 4 wheel drive but we have absolutely no need to go off road. The 4 wheel drive lacks a limited slip diff so it is hopeless on tarmac but we never need to go offroad anyway so all that extra hardware is essentially useless ballast. However, that problem is rather academic as the hire contract it is on, would you believe, actually forbids us from taking it off road.

The second was repaired under warranty having had its first service, yet another new engine. So what was the fault, basically failed DPF regen cycles on both vehicles caused the injector seals to break and leak diesel into the oil. Not impressed by these and don't count on the VW warranty. Two sister vehicles, one they repaired the other we are forking out 6800 for to get it back on the road.
