I still own mine, S430 4Matic. Paid $5k (CDN) for it in 2017 and because of inflation, it's probably gone up in value. I use it as a road trip car a few times a year and drive it all winter because of the 4Matic, and I have winter tires for it so it goes anywhere. It's cost me virtually nothing to own. I do my own oil changes and I had to replace a smog pump, which I bought used for under $100. The quietness and ride comfort are sublime. First of it has 3 concealed cup holders, 2 at the back on the front part of the centre arm rest that you press in and they come out and one at the front just in front of the center armrest behind the gear lever that you also press in for it to be revealed. That crankshaft sensor I’ve had to change, invaluable consumer advice on that. My boot also has the refrigerator unit taking up more space but I manage to survive with it.

Really enjoying your channel. I bought a 1999 W220 S500 L in black with cream interior a couple of years ago, just before the pandemic. Amazingly it only cost £1000 with 93k on the clock. Great spec including soft close doors, heated and ventilated seats, linguatronic, old school Nokia phone in the armrest and keyless go although unfortunately no key card. Amazingly I’ve had almost no issues. I did spend a fair amount immediately after purchase just to make it good - B service and new brake pads and discs plus a full stereo upgrade which cost more than the car but that was a want rather than a need. I also changed the sparkplugs which was expensive. I think it’s an amazing car and so much metal for the money. I also have a beautiful low millage W124 E320 Coupe. As much as I love it, the W220 is in a different league.

I have an '06 S430 4Matic with 105,000 miles on them. It has been a great car! One of the air strut did go out so I had to get a replacement from Suncore Industries for $180 and it works great. As someone with an engineering background, I did change out the strut myself, as well as some other little things on the car. To be honest, there are many things in this S-class generation that you can service yourself. If you are down to get your hands dirty once every 1-2 years, this car is a steal, considering it rides better than most modern cars out there, especially for the price. When you are looking to get one of these, make sure to check on the air suspension, which can oftentimes break. Other than that, I would say it's very reliable.

When my confidence is up, one day I desire to own one of these cars. A buddy of mine has the W221 chasis with the 4.7L V8 engine. Personally I prefer the styling and interior of that car, but both cars suffer the same fate with the headlight design. I don't know, they just never really ticked with me. Try changing a ball joint on one - you cant, you have to change the wishbone cos its pressed directly into it to remove the flex at the joint. The same applies to every component of the car - just sublime quality.

Traded it for a 2005 S500 4matic with 25,000 miles that I still have. In the USA the cup holder is in front of the arm rear, it deploys from the wood panel, not a great design. Yours doesn’t have it because it most likely broke and the previous owner did not want to spend the $150 to replace it, it just snaps in. These are wonderful highway cars, I just used it to pick up a new puppy from the breeder. 5 hour trip each way, 10 hours in the car and I felt completely fine afterwards. Any other repair has just been preventative maintenance or because I hope to keep it for much much longer. A lot of the electrical problems I’ve been able to solve by checking fuses or various reset procedures (so far). Getting ready to do the conductor plate and some upgrades to the valve body while I’m in there. Great vid, i have a 2002 SClass 500 bought it in 2015 and been a fantastic car, full history 103000 miles and just replaced parts due to wear and tear, no probs with air suspension and i use it most days, went to Poland two years ago in it and what an amazing experience driving this awesome car driving through Holland, Germany into Poland where i have family, and good milage too, 2500 miles complete journey all in and £500 in fuel so pretty good, il never get rid of of it as what can i get to replace it with? Keep up the great vids 😁

Thats impressive. You're quite right. What on earth could you replace it with? I think this is why most people keep them

@@HighPeakAutos not long after i got it i had a full stainless steel exhaust fitted actually cheaper than standard Merc one and a lifetime warranty too! Avon tyres all round, amazing grip esp in tight corners and when you stiffen up air suspension car hunkers down and shows how nimble a bloody big car can be! Ha!

There are two cupholders at the end of the rear armrest and one folding cupholder at the center console. You can also put a bottle or another cup where the folding cupholder pops out. I bought a nice example 2005 S 500 L a few years ago and I've been very happy with it. Low maintenance costs, great noise, no problem driving all day long and the champagne fridge is a superb party trick. Also the 2004-2005 S 500 get the 7G-Tronic in rear wheel drive models so you get the same fuel economy as the S 350 but a LOT more power and torque - and better exhaust tone. Also there are no two batteries. The W221 does have two batteries. The Airmatic is really not that expensive to repair. Parts are relatively cheap and you don't need to repair the whole system at once.
@alexandergonczi37323 жыл бұрын
Im not sure but I think there were 2 cupholders in the rear armrest. You had to push the front and they would pop out sort of like a drawer
@atticman42753 жыл бұрын
In my country, the used W220 S-class is cheaper than the used w211 E-class. People usually hate repairing the air suspension in the S-class.

The cupholder is notoriously flimsy. Yours is apparently missing, comes out of the smaller compartment if the armrest. Clean the soft touch surfaces with alcohol cleaner, you don't need those anyways. It will get rid of the sticky

I love me 2002 s430! No NY winters. 82k on it. The only thing I've replaced in the last 5 year's is the air ride compressor 800 bucks installed and the battery 269 bucks! Great milage on Hwy aprox 32mpg. Best car I've owned

There's a used car dealer that uses one of these S class mercs as rolling gate barrier to his car lot. It looks totally knackered, the suspension is on it's arse and there's rust everywhere. It's incredible how such an expensive car can end up a total bin job !!!

I had two over the years both facelift one S320 cdi the other S500 (55 reg and 04 respectively) , fab cars when there wasn't a issue.- insanely complex electrics as said. I do have moments where I go on autotrader and think about buying another... maybe I'm a glutton for punishment! Nice review thanks. 👌
2 cup holders in front of arm rest. And two in folding down arm rest in back seat. 👍

I had a S320 cdi for around 3 years. As you rightly say keep a couple of grand to one side. Great car to drive over in Europe but avoid french multistory car parks, having to take two goes at a corner really gets old Frenchie wound up.

Definitely use a Mercedes specialist and try to buy one with the most complete service history you can find with Mercedes dealers or specialists - excellent advice. This can be cheap, fantastic motoring. The W140 is better made, but wider and more ungainly. Lots of great advice on this video. Style wise, these cars are colour sensitive - silver looks best.

You make very good points here about the homework and studying these luxury cars pre-purchase. A lot of people, for example with the Lexus LS, seem to think by the motto of "most reliable luxury car" "ah they live forever", well yes.. if proper maintenance has been thoroughly applied throughout out its life. However, suspension components, some electrical components and even exterior stuff, they don't last forever, and they cost a fortune to repair in most cases. For example, on the LS, my side mirrors make a shocking grinding sound when folding outwards.. that's a whole new set either new or used from Japan. I think that's where the average joe goes wrong when looking at these cars. You can buy these cars at a low cost due to depreciation over the years and then spend that money 3 folds over just repairing certain things.

I would look at a top spec LEXUS from the same time period or a Nissan Infiniti and see how they compare in price / ride / running costs.

I sold my dad's 2015 S63 coupe a couple of months ago having only done 40K miles. He's switching to electric for his daily commute. It was the most opulent and beautifully put together cars I've ever been lucky to sit in. Everyday I keep thinking that I should've kept it, but I don't do a lot of miles myself so it had to go.
@tjfSIM3 жыл бұрын
Ungainly is definitely the word to use for the W140 - totally agree with you on that, especially those enormous slab-sided c-pillars. I much prefer the look of the W220, it’s just a much tighter and more dynamic design all round. It’s a shame they represent a period of slightly questionable build quality for Mercedes, but still a great looking car.

Hi Matt I’ve had a s500L and a s600sel W140 the older version of the one your testing and I really fell in Love with them especially the s600 it had so many toys on it like an electric adjustable rear view mirror electric rear blind little rods the popped up from the back of the car when you put the car in reverse soft close doors,double glazing the list was almost endless I wish I’d of kept it now as there are not that many on the roads now great video as always hope you are well best wishes ian.

I saw one of this recently, but it was imported with very low mileage ( not to be trusted ). What really put me off them was, Jeremy Clarkson, saying "turn up in a mercedes, people will think the chauffeur has arrived, turn up in a BMW or a Range Rover, people will think here comes the drug dealer." I think I'll just stick with SL 55. NOW, where is that lottery ticket? Good review by the way👍💯, DW40 not be confused with UB40 I suppose😂😂😂.

Had myself 99 s500l for almost 2 years. It had shitload of miles, so it was "money pit" to some extent as things were breaking down her and there. Few takaways: air ride is heaven, best ride quality I've experienced but fun ends when airmatic system breaks down. Other things I really loved : light steering wheel, spacious interior, very comfortable seats in back, good power. What I didn't like: front seats (FL) were not comfortable , some interior part felt cheap and also electrical and mechanical issues due to age and big mileage. But when it's working, it is amazing to ride in one.

Hi colm here, I bought mine in mayo 4 yrs ago, yeah I know about the tax!!! But it's worth it, my philosophy is you can buy an average car for upwards of 15000 euro and it will take you from a to b for sure ,I bought mine for 1800 euros and I tax it every 3 months,its worth every cent, I like you went over it in my mind for a few years. Soon these cars will all be taken off the road and you'll be sorry you never did.
