I've owned a 2014 981 Boxster S PDK/Chrono for 5 years now. I'd definitely recommend the lightning fast PDK dual clutch, but ensure to fit the alloy "Sports steering wheel" (£1,000 Porsche retro fit) which comes with the big alloy flappy paddles. The steering wheel in the video has the "up/down" buttons which are fiddly to use. It is money well spent, and is a joy to use when flipping through the gears, or just let PDK fire through the gears on your behalf. I've always been a "manual" guy" but would never again buy a manual after driving a PDK. Get full leather of you can, then when the top is up, there really is a marvellous expensive, feel good smell to the car. With regard to mpg, I get around 20 mpg, and you won't get any more if you like to blip the throttle occasionally. Don't bother with the sports exhaust.. it just adds annoying pops, and the standard exhaust sound is superb as it is. Some say Chrono it is an expensive clock, but it is far more than that. It comes with launch control, adds a "sport plus" button, firms up the transmission mounts, and has loads of driving stats/charts on the display (track lap times). All of this improves the standing start acceleration immensely. All UK reviews (I've yet to see a Uk performance "test" on a PDK with launch control), have constantly reiterated the same "5 second" figures, but these are for manuals, or they simply haven't tested them. My theory is that Porsche have put pressure on car mags to hide the performance of the PDK/Chrono version as it clearly treads on the 911's toes. For the "launch control version".. 981 S with Chrono, Porsche quoted 0-60 in 4.6 in their brochures, but all tests put it just above 4 seconds with launch control. This will throw you back in your seat. It is a very fast car, and Porsche always position it's performance exactly the same as the base, PDK/Chrono launched 911, but no more, as that would be really bad PR for 911. Porsche can't allow that. But, as I say, to do it you need the S with PDK and Chrono launch control. Here are some 0-60 & 1/4 mile test figures for the PDK/Chrono Boxsters: 981 S Boxster (6 cyl) 7A 4.2 sec 12.7 sec @ 111 mph Car and Driver 981 S Boxster (6 cyl) 7A 4.2 sec 12.7 sec @ 109.7 mph Motor Trend 981 GTS Boxster (6 cyl) 7A 4.1 sec 12.6 sec @ 109.7 mph Road & Track (GTS has just 10bhp extra) A major appeal of this car is that it screams to nearly 8,000 revs - a fantastic noise under hard acceleration - especially with the top down. It is all very well listening to some videos showing an exhaust at idle, but a totally different exepience being in the cabin with the car hits those high revs. I've never experienced anything like it in another car. For example, I've driven several (2014 to 2019) 911s at Porsche Silverstone, and they just do not produce such an exciting noise - they are somehow just not as thrilling. The 981 Boxster was a major step forward. It is best described as a mid engined 911. The interior is virtually identical, as are many of the car components. The major difference I'd say is that the 911 is unshakeable around corners (the Boxster is still superb in corners) but the Boxster is so much more thrilling, so much more fun. Maybe it's the open top/mid engine combination, with the wonderful sounding engine that does it. For me, if you want open top, the Boxster looks better than the 911. Whatever it is, I could have have a 911, but chose the Boxster instead. I'd suggest to anyone, drive them both back to back. One final point, the replacement 718 is a 4 cylinder, but the joy of this car really is the 6 cylinder engine. Both cars are identical, other than some repositioned vents and a few minor changes to the lights and a band along the back. Once again, drive both back to back.

300hp in a light chassis is the sweet spot. It's enough to be quick and usable on the road. The modern chase for horsepower is daft as you never really get to use the cars potential and get the best from them. I love 911s and always wanted one but just couldn't justify 2x the cost over my 981 Cayman S for the spec. Having owned it now for 2 years I think it's better looking and (don't tell 911 owners) handles better because of that mid engine.
@terrylessmann22744 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed your review - very spot on. 981s are great cars. The only fault is the top of the door cards come unglued and you get a wavy surface across the top of the card. Porsche replaces them (at owner's cost if warranty is expired and NOT cheap) with the same flawed design that will fail again. This tends to occur on cars in warm weather climates. Greta won't have to worry about that.

In all that time and mileage I’ve only had a handful of minor faults which have been quickly resolved. Yet, I constantly get the “Oh I bet you know your Land Rover service manager well” or “ They are comfortable to sit in while you wait for the recovery wagon” comments. Used one every day for 4 years. A little bit hairy when it’s icy and not much fun on a very rainy motorway, but marvellous. Actually think it’s more marvellous than my 997.

High Peak Autos 997 is quicker, steering is similar between the two but I think the Boxster was better balanced. The 997 is a slightly better daily driver, extra space, quieter, great visibility but I am sure the Boxster is more fun and is convertible! I agree with you that the FType is a good competitor, to be honest the performance of the 380 or 400 HP f type is more on the level of the 3.6 or even 3.8 911, but price is more comparable with a 981 Boxster or Cayman. Keep up the great videos.

Haha love the rant man. I have a Boxster S 550 Spyder special edition and absolutely love it. I just ignore those negative comments, it’s hard not laugh when people tie their own worth to an object they own instead of their own self as a person… that just screams insecurity lol

Great video - as usual!We all have our particular viewpoint/opinion and we are all always correct - from our point of view. It's impossible for us all to agree/share the same opinion; life would be totally boring if we did. The trick is to ACCEPT difference for what it is - different. If we don't share an opinion, there's no need for us to waste out time/energy saying so. If others continue to express what we consider to but crass opinions, that's THEIR problem - no need for us to take it on board and adopt it, engaging our emotions on a futile mission. So for anyone reading this; iif you don't agree, that's fine by me. you're perfectly entitled to hold your opinion... Now sod off!

great car. handles better than a 911 imho. PDK fantastic especially with sport steering wheel and paddle shifters. Best performance for the money.New body style makes it more "manly". My next car will be the 4.0 Boxster S if I eventually (not soon)part with 2016 F type R. Have to wait till they are on the used market. Great value for money.

I can understand your love for this car. It's so similar in many ways to my Alpina Roadster in terms of performance and impracticality. A true smiles per mile car. A big 👍🏻s up.

Boxster has a big frunk and OK trunk plus extra seat. What else do you need?
@ConstantGeekery3 жыл бұрын
Boxsters may seem expensive, but they are holding value well. Factor this in to the total cost of ownership and it can work out to be very reasonable. I’ve had my 987.2 S for a year, and there are similar models with higher mileage currently selling for more than I paid.

Great video! To me, an MX-5 is all the sports car I'd ever need. A Boxster would be a natural step from there.

Great review as always Matt.I have owned four Boxsters over the years.One Mk1 facelift 2003 2.7 manual a Mk 2 986 2.7 and 3.2 both manual and my last one a 981 Mk3 2.7 Pdk and this was the pick of the four cars.The sort of car you could poodle round town one minute and then change to the sport setting and launch it down a twisty B road.Also fairly practical too.I am a drummer and could take my small kit to rehearsal in it.One day I will get the 981 3.4 S that you have reviewed here…. I hope? If you are thinking about getting a Boxster of any generation then just do it.You will not be disappointed

Haha so riiiight about the English! I've lived in Australia 9 years now and its refreshing, they don't care what you wear or what you drive (they don't have much time for 4 cylinder cars but still they aren't that bad about it). Great review, keep them coming

I was one who suggested your Range Rover would be unreliable. That is because I've owned one, and it WAS! I've also owned 2 Boxsters . THEY, however, are fantastically well built. I would have another in a heartbeat. Especially the model you're driving today. I've owned a 911 too and prefer the Boxster every time.

It's a shame that I have to agree with every point about our people. I used to believe that we were a nation of proud achievers who brought up our friends, relatives & neighbours as we rose the ranks. I still try to believe that there are a good number of people out there that behave this way, like yourself. I'm looking to get rid of my 2016 Audi RS3 & get into something a bit more classy & bit less copy paste, I'm not at all worried about what other people will think, It's not my only car. I've been a follower of your videos for a while, great job cracking out another ace video! Thank you.

Says a guy who drives a Ford Mondeo: "Could you not afford a 911?" Response: "Could you not afford a Boxster?" Seriously, so glad about Matt addressing the negative British attitude. What gets me is people pretend not to care or notice but deep down they do. "Pull him down" mentality. As for the car- I've always liked the Boxster and this latest version looks the part.

But in a strange way its right. Boxter isn't a 911 so if you've got enough pennies for a Boxter at 30k why on earth wouldnt you stretch to 45k for a 2012 onwards 911

Gr8 video yet again on a fab car. I've driven the S and the Z4 M and being tall in a low seating position, the S gets my vote all day long purely because of the view over the bonnet. Both cars are great fun to drive but I did prefer the S out of the two. Keep it up mate, oh and em, stay safe.

A friend of mine who drove a 911 told me that he found the Boxster the better handling car. That must have been around 15 years ago and referred to the versions we had back then - but I think the story still is the same: The 911 still has the stronger engines, the tradition, the image and a very influential fan club - but as a sportscar on a "normal" budget, the Boxster just is the better deal. Never mind the snobs and idiots that sneer at any well built sportscar that can do without brute force...
