I had the first and second generation Boxster S. Pure, immense fun and beautifully built. And great value. I remember the gorgeous induction sound, tuned to give the best sounds to the driver. Never felt the need for an 911. Surprisingly practical too.

I bought an 05 987 boxster 2.7 last year as a first car when I was 17. I still have it and I still love it to bits. It’s now become my daily as the jcw mini I had as the daily before now inevitably spends half of its time in the garage. I don’t think mines had the ims baring done but I service it every 6-7k miles and it’s currently on 70k and I’ve had no issues whatsoever. In terms of driving experience, the flat 6 is glorious in its sound and is so responsive when in the right gear at the right rpm. Furthermore, it’s cornering ability and feedback from the wheel makes it so enjoyable on any back road. Another positive is that it has been so reliable in the time that I’ve had it. The only problem is the running costs in terms of fuel consumption and road tax, but I didn’t buy it to be economical nor drive it economically. If anyone is unsure as to whether they should purchase one, you absolutely should the car has few drawbacks and is by far the best drivers car for the money.

I worked as a detailer at a Porsche dealership for 3 years, your impersonation of 911 owners is spot on. Always liked the Boxster especially the 981 with entry level 2.7 engine which was constantly overlooked. The Boxster is a fantastic entry point into Porsche ownership and flatters the average driver but it doesn’t take long in a 911 to realise it’s a serious bill of kit which requires skill and experience to get the best out of.

Great review. I had a 996 for two years, and in year one did 12k miles in it (I did a lot of driving that year) and it was fabulous. The second year I did less than 1k due to life changes, and that is when the car suffered. They don't like standing still for long periods so better to go for one that us well used rather than low mileage. Porsche specialists are better than Porsche dealers but you are still going to spend more than you would a more 'modern' car. The major service every two years is a bonus, and budget about £1200, less is a bonus. Use a CTEK charger because the battery goes flat quickly, but if you use it on a regular basis, less need. It was the most fun car I have had and made me scream with joy in the country lanes. Got plenty of hairdresser comments from the ignorant, but you know they are ignorant so why worry.

Good honest review there, thanks for sharing, Matt. I echo your very accurate account. I've lived with my 2003 986 (not 987! ) 2.7 for 8 years now and I'm lucky to have it as a second car for the weekend. I've done about 28K in it, it's been all over Europe and the UK and has been a dream to own. Service costs are on par with a Golf, unless you need things like bodywork or exhausts etc - it can get a bit pricey, it's still a Porsche. Loads of old rivet waffle out there, and most of it can be ignored. Just one thing to add (hopefully it's helpful for other would-be owners). I have serviced my car myself religiously since I've owned it, and have wads of paperwork in a box file to support this come sale time. I suspect a lot of Boxster owners do this too, as the model lends itself to being a hobbyists' car. Incidently, I followed my mate in his 2005 987 S for about 400 miles in France years ago, and both my 5 speed box and his 6 speed pulled the same revs in top. Proper nerd am I. 🙂

The 2.7 is revvy and happy and you can have loads of fun without going silly speeds. I've also owned a 911, and agree with you that the Boxster is a more engaging and more fun ownership experience for the road. The 987.1 is a timeless shape, such an amazing car for the money.

Dad does just that. Daily drives SUV and has sports car for weekend. I borrowed the sports car for a weekend. A mercedes SLK 55Amg. It's great fun on the right road but use it in busy city centre traffic and you feel vulnerable. Very low to the ground. Not to mention using a boxster all the time in town will use a lot of fuel. But on a sunny day on a country road it is sensational fun. Before the SLK he had a boxster and it was great. Handled really nicely. Sounded great. I’ve had a 2004 Boxster 2.7 for 5 years … probably only worth £7000. Every trip an adventure, a car that turns around your hips as you swing through bends. But also ridiculously practical, you’d not believe how much boot space … we’ve taken suitcases to the airport, we’ve carried plants from the garden centre, I’ve tracked it, and in winter with the hood up it’s really snug and warm. Had a few boxsters the worst was a 718 Spyder. Too heavy and the electronics kick in too quick. Believe it or not the 986 is more fun to drive. Just buying a one owner full history 987 boxster off a neighbour as I got rid of the Spyder after only a month. Great fun car get one bought.

Hi Matt, Couple of things: My 06 2.7 Boxster is £320 a year in manual guise (the tiptronic will be more, but why the hell would you unless we're talking the later cars with PDK?...its a bloody sports car!). The 3.4s is £620 or there abouts. My car does 28.4mpg on a real world combined, with town and 60-70mph B and dual carriageway work over a hilly A66. Also, I've found the 5 speed box to be great. You can literally be in a 30 at 28mph in 5th gear, and it doesn't bat an eyelid...you can just drive about and accelerate away comfortably with no stuttering as I do in mine. Put a decent exhaust on it and it sounds like a GT car..I'm not exaggerating. They're all you need on a B road. Another thing is the 2.7 is regarded as not suffering with bore score or IMS failure, according to respected sources. Also, no gearbox problems that the 6 speeds have (jumping out of 2nd gear). Selector cables break on 997 and 987 models; so try and find one that's been upgraded. The window regulators fail too; so again look for one that's been replaced. All of them (986 onwards) can get the RMS weeping. There are quite a few weak points on Boxster's and Cayman's, so for those buying one look into them, as what they say is VERY true- "There's no such thing as a cheap Porsche"...it's a fact.

could not agree more. i would choose one over a 911 any day. the perfect 2 seat sports car, beautiful flat 6 motor, with enough performance to entertain with a wonderful soundtrack.

If you're over 6'1", you need the sports seats for sufficient legroom. Great car. Toured Europe. Perfect. Even hit a legal 160mph (satnav correct) and it felt stable.

I like your style sir, I appreciate your confident statements about the Boxster I really want to get one. Oddly enough, just before watching your video I had looked up James Dean's 550 Spyder and saw the price of a reproduction one. Then it occurred to me that the Boxster looks to be a very similar roadster. I thought it was interesting that you mentioned Dean during your dive. Great review! Cheers from the US.

I had a 987 in 2009 when they weren’t very old , it’s was a brilliant car , I was 30 something and loved driving so a match made in heaven but even though im a great fan of these cars that flat six isnt a reliable engine , at 40k miles it developed a knock and some debris in the oil , to fix it was ridiculously expensive I moved it on to a Porsche specialist, 5 years went by and I saw it for sale extremely cheap , so I bought it back lol it was on its third engine !!!! And even that engine was chuffing blue smoke and not running well I spent about 3k on it , a new dmf, aos , rms , ims carrier and seal , the list was endless but it would just fail in new ways , like it didn’t want to live , so I gave up , remembering why I’d sold it in the first place and sold it in again , when I see a nice example of the year I had like yours (mine was even the same colour) I’m insanely jealous lol but after looking at others after I moved mine on I saw the same problems , leaking rear mains , leaking ims , a knackered aos or IMs worries , I loved my boxster but it scarred me for life , so much so I ditched ice cars altogether and went pure EV as an early adopter

I loved and hated my 987 Boxster S for the same reasons you stated. I actually bought it from a big dealer local to yourself that begins with D. After driving a 911 Turbo on a track day I knew I had to own a Porsche but unfortunately a 911 Turbo was way out of my price range at 21. I was never 100% sold on the looks of the Boxster (and the S barely looked different to standard!) but revving past 6k with the top down is some of the most fun I've had in a car. Hopefully one day I'll own a 911 and then I'll be one of those nerds haha!

"toasty bottom" - don't know why but that did make me giggle. I found the steering too heavy for parking as a daily, definitely a good second car choice.

I never used to like the Boxter but I have to admit you’ve swayed me a little. I often find the ones that say ‘you only buy a Boxter because you can’t afford a 911’ are the types that can’t afford either. I still prefer the Honda S2000 over this however.

Thanks Matt, another great vid. The one thing that prevented me buying one is the gearbox issues I may have. Like you said it's a great 3rd car toy (My Wife's, My daily & that would be the 3rd). Why have a boxster as a 3rd when I am happy with My Audi S5 Convertible as my daily driver? Decent performance, didn't cost as much as a 2010 boxster, practical & very reliable. OK, it has a DSG box but you do get used to it. Drive the Audi in the snow & lots of fun to be had (60/40 split)! You can wiggle it, just a little bit....Oooh, Ahhh! Sorry! All the best.....

I am beginning to realise that Matts prejudices are much more interesting than the descriptions of these highly priced sports cars that few buy. I would need the auto equivalent of a stair lift to get in and out of these bumpy noisy flyers.

I’ve got a 987 3.2 and I couldn’t agree more with your point about just buying the best one, although I do think buying your perfect spec is important too. I bought mine specifically because of the terracotta full leather interior and lobster wheels. My perfect car

Another great review Matt. My daily driver auto Subaru Forester’s cam belt broke early Dec and still waiting for the repair to damage caused so have had to daily drive my 2009 manual 3.4S for the past 6 weeks and it is surprisingly good despite the ropey weather we’ve had. 85,000 miles and tight as a drum, the build quality is immense. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻

Seriously considered buying one back in 2010 (had some spare money at the time) . Servicing costs put us off and bought a 350 SLK instead. Don’t regret it and still have it over twelve years later.
@boxsterbenz40592 жыл бұрын
servicing costs of both the boxster and the slk can be an issue if you use the dealer. i have an '07 boxster (original owner) as well as 2 mercedes ('15 c300 and '18 sl450). none of them go to the dealer for service once warranty is up. i have independent garages locally that do a great job for me. none of them have cost me more than a few hundred canadian dollars a year (including oil changes). [insurance extra]. because of canadian winters i also have a '21 lincoln aviator so that i don't have to take the sl450 out in snow or ice. the c300 is all wheel drive as well.

Where I live on the German/Belgian border I see a lot of cars like these that are garaged for half of the year and used in good weather. We have special registration plates for such cars that are valid for 6 months of the year. From Aachen to Monschau the roads can be long and wide then drop into dipping mountains of the Eiffel. Perfect for sports car rides in good weather.

Nice review. The earliest Boxsters with the yellow indicators are more desirable than you'd think due to looking more pure - retro but also ageless. The 924 predecesor is much the same (you'd never believe they came out in 1976). I'm sure plenty of committed Boxster owners could live with driving one everyday but I agree many have multiple owners and it's good to hear a dealer's perspective on that. I won't say what I really think about your comment about willingy deciding to go from this to an SUV... ;)
