I bought a 5 year old C5 with 106000km about 13 years ago. Phenomenal 2 litre(?) turbodiesel that was fast enough and never, ever used more than 6 l/100km. The car was handsome, supremely comfortable and carried me for almost 80000km all over South Africa. Never once went wrong. I was building a business and could only afford to service it once yet it continued to please. Furthermore, my driver and I was involved in a high speed accident and neither one of us had a scratch. I've had a Mercedes S Class since and a couple of SUVs but the C5 is the car that I will always, always remember with the most affection. In South Africa, these are scarce to the point of being non-existent, so I'll never be able to replace it. Nobody will convince me that German cars are better - I had eight - than the C5. It was perfect.

Can't understand why you didn't replace the 4th tyre. I was always given to understand that you should have matching tyres, at least on the same axle, if not all round.

It's one of the most important safety things of all, IMO. I once bought a Mk1 Skoda Octavia. It had three identical tyres, and one different one - OSR. The different one was a Continental in good condition so I hoped it would be OK. On RH gentle bends in very light rain, around 50 mph, the vehicle started to turn more than I was steering it. Frightening! It was on its way to rotating off the road. It happened every time in those conditions. Not on dry roads or wet roads. There was nothing wrong with any of the dampers or bushes or anything else. I was very worried because I had a young family at the time. Because I couldn't find the fault, I was going to scrap the car, but a lady concert pianist suggested I try changing that Continental for a matching tyre. I did that and then the handling was perfect. I drove it for ~70K miles and didn't have a single problem with the handing again. She finds it very funny because she says she knows nothing at all about cars. Well she knew that you need matching tyres.

8:39 The button with the Citroën logo on is related to the eCall system, that's the red SOS button. When you press the red button a SIM card connected unit in the car makes a call to the emergency line. When you press the citroën button that exact same unit puts you in contact with some kind of assistance service and you ask them through the car speakers "whatever doubt or issue you got with the car"
@HologramJones
@HologramJones 8 сағат бұрын
The SOS button connects to emergency services and the Citroen one to Citroen service where available. As for the fixed hub steering, once you use it you see the logic. No more chasing around buttons or weird hand positions when you turn the wheel and need a function, you'll always find it in the same place, but most importantly that was deemed the best design for the airbag too

This was the C5 model that Citroën aimed to prove itself with in 2008 and then again after the 2011 model update. They wanted to show the world that they could produce cars that were not only exceptionally comfortable and extravagant but also reliable. And they succeeded. The 2.0 HDi engine featured in these cars (not the 140 hp version with the unreliable Delphi fuel system, but the 163 hp one with a Bosch system) was simply fantastic. It ran quietly even at idle, and at higher revs, you could barely tell it was a diesel. It was incredibly torquey, and even with the automatic gearbox (a six-speed sequential Aisin unit), it managed an average of 38 mpg, which is excellent considering its performance and size. They didn’t rust, and they were free from electrical problems. This was particularly impressive given the sheer number of features these cars could be equipped with at the time (aside from adaptive cruise control), especially considering what was available in the early 2010s. Highlights included: automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, parking assist with front and rear sensors, electric front seats (with the upper third of the backrest adjustable separately and memory for the driver’s seat), an HDD sound system, sat-nav, a 7-inch color display, tinted windows, and a panoramic roof. And, of course, the soul of this car was its hydropneumatic suspension. The magic carpet ride. It wasn’t just comfortable but also safe. For example, on the Tourer model, you could load the boot as much as you liked, and the car would always remain stable and level. Or at speeds above 70 mph, the car lowered its ride height by 2.5 cm to improve stability and reduce drag. These were fantastic machines and could be bought for pennies, mainly due to the poor reputation of the previous models. I owned a 2011 facelifted 2.0 HDi Tourer Exclusive for five years (there was another facelift in 2013). During that time, we put nearly 100,000 miles on it, including countless domestic and European trips, and it never had a single fault. Not once. Other than regular servicing and replacing wear-and-tear parts, it never let us down unexpectedly. We even cruised down German autobahns with a 500-liter roof box and three bikes on a Thule tow hitch rack at 120 mph on more than one occasion. If you can, get yourself a well-equipped and properly maintained example (only with the Hydractive III suspension and at least the 2.0 163 hp engine) and enjoy it because they will never make cars like this for such little money again

I agree. I tend to take the opposite approach. Whenever I have bought a new car, before use it has always had a complete service and inspection by my local garage and unless the tyres are in good condition and at least mid-range, they just get replaced as a matter of course. Even our Corsa purchased for our two teenagers to start driving after getting their licences had a set of four new mid-range tyres before they were allowed to drive the car.

@@SteeeveO Don't be sad about this. The DS5 doesn't even come close to the C5 in practically any aspect. In terms of driving comfort, space, and quality, it's definitely no match. Now even big car supermarkets have 10+year old cars on their fronts and are asking decent money for them which previously they wouldn't have even considered... It's depressing imo that the prices of newer used vehicles are so high (and new) so people are forced to look at older vehicles which are just that -old! 😢

Suspension went funny, and the cost of repairs was too high at the time, so I had to scrap it. Since then, I've owned about 10 different cars in the space of 2 years, and none of quite feeling right. I've owned a C5 Tourer Exclusive 2 litre HDi 16 from 2011. The engine made 140 horsepower. On paper. It felt stronger. There also was a 163 hp version. The C5 was a great car. Only time I sold a car and regretted it later. Still do. Whoever buys this one will not be disappointed.

Matt likes to “bash French cars” as he’s sitting in a Range Rover……which is a true off roader, as it’s usually off road in a garage getting fixed! I’ve had ten French cars, 2 Peugeots and 8 Renaults and have never had an issue with any of them. My mother drives a 2006 Clio bought new and still running like clockwork.

I'm afraid my experience has been the polar opposite, but I'll leave it at that or we'll be here all night, other than a 406 I had which was generally trouble free if not particularly enthralling to drive. No problems whatsoever with my JLR cars. The biggest problem with Range Rovers is the buyers - people buy them used, not realising how much they cost to run, then they start cheaping out on servicing and so on because they can't afford it, then start slagging them off on social media when they break down because they haven't looked after them. Always easy to spot, they put cheap tyres on from brands you've never heard of.

I thought exactly the same too! We’ve had various Renaults from way back in the early 80’s with a 9 until 2015 a Captur and not one has ever let us down. Had two brand new Mercedes and both fell apart, one fell apart and broke down. Had a new Land Rover and let me tell you, NEVER EVER EVER AGAIN. What a pile of hyped up crap that was and the dealers even more so!! For a premium manufacturer their dealers are by farrrrrrrrrrr the worst I’ve dealt with. Truly dreadful. Lexus all the way and Renault of course.

I bought the 2.0 270hp (4x4 as standard) R Type petrol as an ex demo at the start of the lock-down (2020?), in the metallic yellow. 18 months and 12K trouble free miles later, I sold it to WBAC for £400 less than I paid for it. A lot of car for the money second hand. Really needed a 6 pot up front. The detuned Golf R engine was too coarse when pushing. Extremely pretty car though, and got a lot of attention at the time. Super practical also - heaps of space front, back and boot. Matt is not a VW fan and would describe it as dull/ordinary to drive. Probably true, but as a package it's great.
