Most jeeps here in Ireland are converted to commercial. When I first moved here there was Toyata corrola Van's and even Citroen xsara Van's. All done to get around the Tax. Lots of VW Golf Van's here as well.

I like the way you mix the format up, from the day to day stuff to the vids with higher production values. Keeps things interesting. I've got bored with plenty of car channels and moved on, but yours is consistently entertaining. Plus I'm a sucker for a Land Rover vid. Mate's SDV6 Disco 4 died the other week - it was the problem where one of the crank oil channels gets rotated, causing oil starvation. Cue grinding noises and four hours on the M6 on the way to our camping trip in the Lakes. Which was a real bugger, because he was bringing the food.

The rear seats are an after market conversion. The discovery van does not come with these from factory nor the seatbelts- they are capped off like the 6th&7th in yours. Also the middle row of windows are usually the same as the rear row so I think someone has changed these on yours. I would have thought it would be easy to get them lowering and raising.

@@HighPeakAutos this is probably a cancelled order from republic of ireland as they are plenty of commercial derived jeeps and cars on the irish market you could at one time get toyota corolla ,ford focus and peugoet 205 vans from 3 door equivalents my boss had a toyota land cruiser in commercial form and we had renault 19s in van form too. if you put a row of seats in these in ireland you would lose the tax status as lots of people did this to beat the vat man customs etc .

Exactly what I was thinking! The normal commercial doesn't have viewable rear windows or rear seats/belts etc. But I read it doesn't change the tax class if they are added, BUT a mechanic was prosecuted for trying to pass off a Disco as a van. He had put removable shelves in the back, from memory.

Friend of mine had a new Disco 3 converted and registered as a commercial by the dealer back in 2005. All of the benefits and few of the drawbacks. Probably a loophole that's been closed by now. Strange side effect was that it was registered in a batch with a lot of Fire Service vehicles, and several times the blue light brigade wrongly assumed that my friend was top brass turning up to an incident and he'd get waved through road blocks, always difficult to explain that you're not who they think you are when their mind is already made up!

Didn't know these existing, sounds like a great idea of a product since you still get a disco 4 with lots of running cost benefits. The windows and rear seats being different is a little odd but would be something I would bother to retrofit (bet they just need a window regulator or something) Clean air zones as mention are going to affect myself since I live on the greater London and Essex border. They want to explain the ULEZ out here where the M25 is, there is basically lots of rural lanes, fields, green parks and some small towns where I live but they treat us as if it is central london congested with cars so they can rip people off for £12.50 a day to pay their tfl debts.

I recently just picked up a Noir Blue 2015 Discovery 4 LCV with a rear seat conversion, my only real criticism is that the rear seats take 2 people (realistically) to fold down! Apart from that why JLR didn't make a HSE version baffles me. Apart from that they are fantastic, I'm lucky that mine is specified with the armrest, DRL LED headlights and Meridian, however, I haven't noticed that echo that you seem to hear in over 2500 miles. Also the rear doors have the window motors removed out of the back of them as there are no OEM seats installed, however they are easily retro fitted. Such a fantastic vehicle I hope you enjoy your ownership as much as I am! As with always regular maintenance especially regular oil changes are key. Enjoy!

As a sole trader (plumber), I bought a standard Discovery 3, collapsed the rear seats & insured it for commercial use, rather than private/light goods. It worked & was totally legal. I did pay the full road tax of around £500 a year (at the time), but incurred no other additional costs. You don't necessarily need to buy the commercial version. I currently drive a V6 Audi Q5 & again; I simply insure it for commercial use.

Great video as usual. One other disadvantage is the speed limit for LCVs. which is 10 mph less than a car. 50mph on a single carriageway and 60 mph on a dual carriageway .Motorway is however the same as a car at 70 mph.

Rear seats are a third party option, you can have original Land Rover seats retrofitted . They do come with armrests if spec them. Soundproofing is the same as the car version. All commercials start life as passenger vehicles.

If it's an LCV, as opposed to a car derived van, it's limited to 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways. That's a big disadvantage for something like a Disco which is built to cruise at reasonable speeds. They can still do 70 on the motorway. If you're doing 77mph on a dual carriageway in a Disco car, you won't get nicked, as you're within the threshold agreed by ACPO. If you're doing the same in a Disco van, it's three points and a fine. If you're doing 90mph in a Disco car on a dual carriageway and you get caught, it's three points and a fine. 90mph in a Disco van is a ban.

it's down to local forces discretion on the buffer zone (10% plus 2). Ie Its guidance not law, which was clarified by Police Cheifs Council a while back. .. Ie 35 past a school at kicking out time you might get a ticket depending on the cop. But definitely a good point you'd have to be pretty unlucky tbf.

The rear side windows might not go up and down, you've got the switch so I should say that the wiring for the electric motor is probably there because the loom is probably the same one for the car, all you might need is to fit the motors which you could get second hand off the net and get them fitted, nice and easy

Dont' get me started on ULEZ, Owned since newish a 2013 BMW 330D and now can't go to local tip just inside the north circular in London without paying, do max 6k miles a year as use public transport for work and ended up with a diesel as couldn't source a petrol at the time due to govt policy driving diesel use. Now I see complaints about road tax for elec vehicles, if can afford £30k+ for a new electric car then can afford to pay to use the roads, while a big old car might pay £600 when worth little and end up scrapped.

When I left school I used to work at the local Subaru/Isuzu dealership.. They used to “convert” SWB Isuzu Trooper’s into what they called Commercial’s by removing the rear seats and blank the rear side windows out with body coloured vinyl..

My first Landy was a Discovery II TD5 Commercial. First owned by Thames Water and very well maintained under a lease. Commercials make sense if you don't have a family or you have 2nd vehicle. They have all the comfort of the normal version and the capacity of a van. I retrofitted the cruise control by buying the switch and wheel from eBay. Mine had completely blank rear windows. If you really want, you can swap the blank rear glass for normal glass. I also removed the steel bulkhead so I could adjust the seat and carry long work items. Another bonus is that you don't have to suffer the downsides of a pick-up...which you pointed out!

My dad bought one of them and put proper back seat in it…. My dads was a full commercial with plastic covers over back side windows and a metal plate behind front seats….all the covers come out and you can bolt seats straight in….just a thought

They are very common in Ireland up to 2016 with 5 seats. Since then available only with 2 seats. In fact any vehicle can be ‘commercialised’ into 2 seats. Although Land Rover seem to have the market cornered here as they manage to get the Disco homologated from the factory with 2 seats, meaning they are subject to a much lower tax rate when purchased new. They have now done the same with the defender.

I agree though, the LR4 is a very handsome car and looks more of a Land Rover than the Discovery 5 which is bordering on being a Range Rover brother or sister, rather than a cousin. As every vehicle I've recently bought with the Keyless theft option has required me to fit a tracker, I'm not sold on the absence of that option being a bad thing. But it's actually a very useful vehicle if you lug lots of mess around and have no need of rear seating.

As a Navara driver I agree with all of your points, they aren't quite there as being a car yet but you can use them as one because your passengers get the same luxury they would in a car. In Ireland you can buy a full spec passenger disco 4, pay €1000 and it can be a crew cab. Tax is €333 here. I converted my disco 3 passenger to a van buy removing the seats, putting down a van floor and doing paperwork. Tax went from €1400 to €333. Getting it taxed is a pain but doable

I’ve got disco 5 commercial and that came as HSE, with black pack and chunky 21inch wheels. Cant get sun roof (but then no leaks) but has the 3 Ltr engine, heated everything and Meridian hi-if. What Matt also missed is that if you run a company car the BIK is tiny and the fuel card cost near to nuffin. But dot shout too loudly as HMRC will surely kill this nice side step.

Those rear seats are aftermarket. I've seen plenty of conversions and the ones I have seen they mostly use the genuine Discovery 4 rear seats and seatbelts as the mounting locations are still there like a passenger D4 and also have the rear windows swapped to glass with the regulators and switches working. A standard discovery 4 commercial would have a cage behind the front seats and the 2nd row windows would be blackout panels instead of glass like the 3rd row ones are. It would also have a large flat loadspace from the very rear up to behind the front seats with small side cabinets underneath accessible from the rear doors to utilise the space under the loadspace floor that would normally be the rear passenger footwell. It seems to me on your one whoever did the conversion did one as cheap as they could. You can also get commercials variants on the Disocvery 5 and Discovery 1. They even sold commercials for both generations of Freelander. The commercials are built in the SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) department, you know, the same department as Range Rover SVR's and Range Rover SV Autobiographies, etc. Being commercials they have to be MOT'd in a different class to cars so not all MOT places can do them. Disco 4 fun fact, in some countries Land Rover sold the Discovery 4 with the option of the 5.0 Supercharged V8 used in the Range Rover Sport (+ SVR) and Vogue.

The rear seats are an aftermarket retrofit. They didn’t make these with rear seats (except for some Irish market versions) but many places offer rear seat conversions.

@@Inflator82 You can do. I’ve seen some with it done. The main reason most don’t is because of cost, the simple bench seats cost far less than buying all the correct factory parts. Technically the vehicle no longer should be classed as a commercial vehicle though if you put original seats in, and you lose the commercial benefits.

Agree, I have a isuzu d max with truckman box, one big advantage is drums of diesel, petrol and wet equipment is separate to the cab so you don't have to suffer a nauseating journey if something spills or really bad condensation. The double cabs aren't brilliantly comfortable or amazing of road but good enough and decent tow vehicles.

I'd dispute your assertion that a Navarra has a rear seat - it has a torture chamber designed to restrict the victims legs and a back rest that is so upright it will cause spinal damage - I could only assume when I had one for a short while they were focussed in the presumably small but specialised market of small contractors/BDSM enthusiasts who would use them. I suppose the 4x4 availability may also attract extreme location dogging enthusiasts too

I ran a Disco 3 Commercial then a Disco 4 Commercial, each for 70k miles. No issues and as a company director, so tax efficient. Strictly, putting back seats in means all the tax benefits are lost. I didn't as we had a Golf when we needed more than 2 seats. Never heard of anyone being caught out, either. Drove at car speed limits too and never got a ticket even when passing average speed cameras that check the vehicle's status against the speed driven and the appropriate limit. BTW, you could option it up pretty highly, beyond XS when new.

Sad day at mine Matt, sold my Fiesta Active for what I can best say was a poultry sum but more than most City dealerships were thinking of giving me - but from now on its busses and the odd Taxi when I go shopping and buy in a months supply instead of a weekly shop. Everything is still in the back passenger doors just pick the silicon out of the plugs reconnect to window winders and turn back on in the CCF files with an obd. The rear seats are a proper grey area re the tax man if you pay for private use as it can't carry a ton like a pick up. There are some only a few high spec ones and they are Euro 6 very late 66plate ones none of the 16 plate ones. They did some high spec ones at the end of the run.

Most Range Rovers you can see on second hand websites here in Belgium are transformed into 'light freight' vans. Backseats out. Tax-efficiency. You only pay 160 euro rather than 599 euro per year.

Worth noting that these were made as a fully finished discovery with back seats and safety belts. Then they were shipped to different warehouse where upon the rear seats were taken out, 🙄 window blanks added and also a full “dog cage” heavy steel flatbed and parcel separator fitted. As they can carry 1 tone of weight inside they qualify as LGV. Back in the day, Nene Overland did a conversion on the RR sport 😀 and issued certificate stating it was wagon 😃

I’ll be buying a van similar to this in the new year. I’d like a Land Cruiser but they’re north of £30k, I’m not keen on the styling of a Shogun Sport so I’ve decided on a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, a low mileage, couple of year old example is £20k (ish). If Mr Burnham changes his tune on the Manchester ULEZ I’ll not get clobbered with the Outlander either. Added to that , as many of my work journeys are fairly local I’ll waft around in electrically propelled silence.

We had a Commercial Disco 2 at work. Very handy for shifting stuff but it had a dreadful automatic gearbox and you could hardly see out of it when reversing round corners. It eventually died of chassis rot

On the subject of road tax my wife receives the highest level of DLA for mobility and has a blue badge. Even if we didn't have a mobility vehicle and bought our own vehicle we would not pay road tax. Ultimately that means we could drive a Humvee with zero road tax. Crazy

That does not comply as a commercial now! The seat were added and not an option at Landrover. The rear window switched and see through glass are also extra and will also make it none commercial, the standard bulk head protection has been removed so now dangerous. They are lovely vans but only when left as a van

Standard Discovery is currently £360 per year and not £615! I have the face-lift 2014 XXV edition so the saving isn't that much for the Van type.
