I think the LR3's short comings were due to tyres. The disco 2 was on maxis AT, the disco 4 on BF Goodrich AT, but the disco 3 was on Yokahoma AVS ST tyres, which perhaps are more geared towards road driving whereas the 2 and 4 were on more off road tyres. Tires play a big role in how they preform, At 18:08 LR3/D3 and 18:34 LR4 or D4 if you compare the thread pattern between the two, the LR4 has more aggressive threads, asymmetrical block patterns larger and deeper grooves in the tires compared to the LR3 that has less aggressive blocks with symmetrical patterns, narrow and shallower groves. Deep aggressive asymmetrical grooves in tires on LR4/D4 helps it gain better traction on loose sand and gravely by digging into surface where there's grip, and rocky surfaces the sharp aggressive blocks on the tire help claw/grip on to those rocks thus provides strong traction. The LR3/D3 symmetrical shallow less aggressive tires cant provide traction in those situations because of its thread pattern and design, and also wider 285 tires (tho not by much 10mm) did not help either as it cant allow the tire to dig down into surface that has traction, it just floats and spins the tire. If Lr3 had similar tires as D1 and LR4/D4 or more aggressive A/T tires it would have been just as good as its predecessor and successor. Conclusion, do your research and choose the right tires for your adventure's environment and know its limitations, just because its stamped or says "A/T or all terrain" on the tires doesn't mean they're created equal.
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
See there's lots of video showing that more aggressive does not help him stand at all. I think in this case both of the newer models did not are their tires down enough but the reason why the D4 was better is because it had way more horsepower and was able to gain more speed prior and maintain more momentum throughout. If the D3 had more aggressive tread it would have still slow down the same and kept digging the same. I'm not saying more aggressive is necessarily worse but if you don't have the horsepower, not torque, to assist with those more aggressive tires that won't really matter. There's plenty of videos of completely All Season Highway tread going through sand perfect when you drop air to 20 PSI now you are absolutely correct as far as the rest of the video climbing those rocks yes the D3 did need more aggressive tread butt on the sand that wasn't the issue it was lack of power and momentum. 190 horsepower compared to the other two having well over 200 horsepower and less air in the tires. I guarantee if you put the D3 at 20 psi and the D4 at 36 PSI they would do the same because the D4 has more power to gain momentum ahead of time
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
I'm not trying to knock your whole tire educational post but I've driven with low horsepower diesel vehicles compared to higher horsepower vehicles and the ability to gain momentum is so much greater. I know both of these models were diesel but look at the horsepower ratings. It's clear the way the D4 was going probably three-quarters faster before they'll even started. But yeah you're correct it's just not the reason it failed the Sandhill

Absolutely! I live in Southern Arizona and we have some extremely tough crawler trails and I admit like a brand-new Rubicon can make things look much easier but I have a D2 just like this one and it will hang in most situations and is 22 years old. If I compared it to a Jeep or Toyota from the year 2000 it is absolutely way better. Only thing I like about a brand-new Jeeps compared to a brand new Defender is the articulation, how wide they are and how low center of gravity. The defender is still good but dimensionally they could have done better on the new one. A little top-heavy. If you park when next to a disco 5 the Disco 5 is actually lower and the body is wider which helps look at the Humvee
@KhanTigre Жыл бұрын
I love how you can se the air suspension work on 14:20, it's interesting how it just keeps the body stable while pushing those tires into the sand. The tire pressure and type of tire made all the difference though. The D4 held a lot of momentum going up the sand hill, the D3 not so much.

@davidhowell5945 Жыл бұрын
Two things stopped the Disco 3, the driver and the tyre pressures. He was driving a bit slowly and the tyre pressures for sand are best around 15 to 18psi. Those pressures would to some extent counterbalance his slower approach. The tread had little to do with it. In fact the more highway tread lets the tyres “float” more whereas the all terrain chunky treaded tyres would dig in more and are not as effective on sand. You can run a Disco at 10 psi and not roll a tyre off the rim due to the design of the bead lock on the rims.

What he said about the D2 was right though the solid axles and Simplicity still having traction control with the ability to do lots of mods and build your dream rig with so much articulation.. something they didn't mention the 2003 Discovery 2 had the transfer case it doesn't even allow for an aftermarket CDL lever so that one was only all wheel drive not even CDL four-wheel drive and it did all that just old traction control.

Disco 2,3,4 presented here are better off roaders than the modern gle, x6 or q7/q8 and costs fraction of the audi, merc or bmw. Add some lift and at or mt tires and discos are becoming a great off road cars to conquer most of the terrain.

I saw a Mazda MX5 go up a hill in the dead of winter time when all-wheel drive SUVs couldn't. Tires are literally everything, yet they are always overlooked in comparisons.

I have a '99 TD5 Disco 2 and I'm in love with it. However, despite the Traction Control system is very effective, it is also a pain in the ass when it fails, which is more often than one would like to.
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
Yeah once you work out the bugs on yours I'm assuming maybe you haven't had it really long. Then the traction control system stays pretty good. After I did the shuttle valve and rewire I had one ABS sensor go bad after that it only does it if your brakes are really dirty and you press them and they squeak or something. I just don't go down rabbit holes with all the people on Facebook following continuity and testing all this stupid stuff I just have a good scanner and I replace what it tells me. Also you can tell if it's the brakes or the Hub because they will make noise and the ABS sensor electronics are basically electrical vibrations and if the brakes or the Hub are making vibrations that hinder the electronic vibrations which are obvious because you can hear the Hub and feel it or hear the brakes then you know it's those. Otherwise when it's all said and done it's just the ABS sensors most the time. I just don't listen to other people online I just scan it and replace it and it's been good for a long time and when it's not it's easy to fix.

At 11:38 the tires are more street seasonal while the others had a much more aggressive tire. Regardless, Its seriously impressive that it made it with those tires!

a comparison that I have been waiting for a long time. The D2 did pretty well even without the CDL activated like the D3/D4 The D4 performs nearly like the new Defender.
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what I was thinking about the D2 how impressive because a2003 doesn't even have the capability of installing aftermarket CDL on the transfer case. They should totally be praising that thing LOL I mean it's dumb for Land Rover to ever release something that can't have true four-wheel drive but it's still be good
@x5or Жыл бұрын
@@ronaldrrootiii6040 I sincerely think of replacing the transfer case of my Disco with that of a defender with CDL for a few months now. I will put 33" tires while changing the ratio of the TB (the Ratio of the Defender is higher than that of the disco)
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
@@x5or yeah that's totally good or at the very least just a different year disco case. I mean it's basically not four-wheel drive I don't get why they did that. Seems like they could have at least put a Torsen differential if they weren't going to allow it to lock

The D2 should have come first, as the test didn't consider these points: (a) purchase price. The D2 cost a fraction of D4 (b) how difficult is it to self maintain? (c) what are the chances of getting stuck due to failure? and which one is easier to fix (d) aftermarket choices and upgrade (although this one is mentioned)
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct! Also if this was an American sold D2 then it doesn't even have CDL. The 2003 did not even come with it on the transfer case to add the aftermarket lever. All the other ones you can add it but only this year the top of the case is smooth there's no attachment . Then that one was only a wd and traction control making its performance even more impressive which I believe because the solid axle setup is much better

These cars are built to go anywhere indeed, but tires do make quite a difference and the D3 proves it.
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
That's what is so frustrating about all the new models especially the defender. 18in Wheels being the smallest and low profile tires. Even if you get aggressive low profile tires you cannot tear them down and make the footprint longer. It's just weird that a four-by-four only company with that Heritage doesn't make their vehicles that way how Jeep does

I feel the discovery 4 was peak Land Rover, luxury but usable it’s not going to look out of place in a field nor a town it looks good performs well and is a beast, including the modern tech. I just feel since then it’s gone downhill focused on being Chelsea tractors, and while that is where the market is I feel they should keep with the disco 4 which was good at both. Only thing close is the new defender but that’s a really expensive farm truck

D1 would have been as good if not better compared to the other ones. I have a disco 2 with +5 and 32”, and a friend of mine drives a stock D1 tdi 200(the first one)…and that thing in stock form is as good as mine, sometimes even better, due to the way those axles can hang down off the car and read the terrain…it’s amazing. Mine stays there sometimes thanks to the TC, wich works awesome… To me the main difference is the improvemente in electronics, engine performance and the comfort, wich goes better and better with the newer models. D3 and 4 are still amazing offroad, their TC is better comoared to the D2 one, but they are far more comfortable and faster on the road… All of them are amazing for their time..
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
@@checa160 hey I understand what you're saying but yours would flex and follow the ground better if your 5 inch lift wasn't so stiff. That's the problem with a lot of lift kits you have to customize the Springs otherwise they are just meant for looks. A factory D2 with traction control will do the same thing as a D1 but better articulation and also having traction control. Also the original D2 having the ace system when you put it in low range the sway bar becomes loose and the system shuts off and it's like a sway bar disconnect. So really a D2 is better yours is just way too stiff.
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
They can just take the ABS fuse out of the D2 and there you go a D1 LOL lots of wheel spin
@checa160 Жыл бұрын
@@ronaldrrootiii6040. Agree. But the problem is you don’t have that much stroke on the factory disco 2 with springs. And that stiffness make it SO good in the road and on fast traks, where the D1 is a lot less stable. Using longer sway var links it improves a lot, bit there’s still more wheel lifts than in the D1. I don’t think D2 has more stroke than the D1 as it relays in the Traction control. So you have the best of both on and off road thanks to the electronics. D1 is simply a little bit more effective offroad in stock form. The D2 models with ACE are better as you say thanks to that system. But still the clearance is a bit better in stock form in the D1(corrected. I had said D2 before, but I meant D1). So being A LOT BETTER onroad and on fast tracks are the fee to pay in difficult tracs die to that stiffness. If ypu go softer win offroad bit loose onroad and on fast tracks. So it’s worthless in my opinion. Not a serious problem anyway. I still prefer the D2 compared to the D1. Cheees

Disco 3 can easily go through any substacle or trail that Disco 4 can. I know because i had both. Somethings wrong with that vehicle. Edit: I watched it again. That idiot in the D3 took it to the “sand” mode at the last period while D4 was on the “drive” mode. Thats a huge difference for speed and pace. Of course that car will sink, what were you thinking?? :)

D3 has on light duty all-terrain tires that’s not made for use in this kind of terrain. While D4 has proper all terrain tire. If they had the same tires D2, D3 and D4 would have performed equally and effortlessly.
@garystuart226 Жыл бұрын
Plus 1 what you’ve both said , also wonder if the D4 maybe had a rear locker as see they were optional on both the D3 / D4
@davidedwards4125 Жыл бұрын
This is my complaint, sand mode a standard and then the D4 didn’t stop on the earlier hill turn thing. Shame as otherwise it was looking like a sensible test. They should use the same driver and settings.
@zech007 Жыл бұрын
@@davidedwards4125 Sand Mode allows more slip at wheel before traction control takes over, transmission to hold gears at higher RPM, and engine to be more responsive at touch of the throttle. In Sand mode should give D3 an advantage but in the end its using proper made all terrain tires what makes D4 conquer that hill effortlessly and not using a on road orientated/light duty "all terrain" tires.
