You touched on this but I feel it is important to know distance. I don't thin a lot of people can tell the difference between 40 yards and 60 yards

That's a good point. Walking off 40 to 60 yards or using a range finder would help a lot of people get their eyes trained.

Back in the day my dad and his friend were huntin with my dads dog and they would have there heads down and watch the dogs eyes and at a certain point theyd hop up and shoot

I know some guys that do the same. A good dog will always spot them for you.

Yeah stay back Iv`e had other hunters within 50 or 60 yards of me and we would be on a big lake with a lot of choices .
