Sodium, pickles are loaded with sodium which is what your body is pouring out when your working hard, combine the more sodium/ salts you have in you're body the more water your body will absorb, our trainer used to make all of the starters on our team eat a pickle before each game

Pickle juice is a miracle food! I've never found anything better to prevent cramps when you are doing long rides or are recovering. I drink it straight from the kosher pickle jar.
