PLEASE NOTE THIS VISEO WAS SHOT IN 2021, some information may now be outdated. Especially Briksmax has been updating their components. Though they are nicer they are also no longer compatible with the others. They are currently (February 2024) not including converters.

First of all, thanks for this video! I'm just getting into this whole lighting-topic and your video provides a good overview over the different brands. As for your comment: do you mean that the Briksmax components are no longer compatible with other brands, like Light my Bricks for example?
@HighTeaToys

@@dr_schultzI am so sorry I have only just seen this comment. Yes as far as I am aware, they are no longer compatible though there are converters on the market. However, this is third-party information as I haven't ordered a light kit from them in a few years now.

@@dr_schultz i know that some kits st least use the new connections (same as the ones in the FunWhole sets I’ve reviewed recently) as it’s better and more sturdy but I also don’t know if they rolled that out to all their kits. I assume they keep their old kits the same and maybe use this new stuff in their new kits. It seems a lot of work otherwise.

@@HighTeaToys Yeah, that makes sense. After all, I have very little experience with lighting of lego sets, so what I have noticed is certainly only a little aspect. Anyway, thank for your input and your help!

I live in Australia, I’ve bought kits from light my bricks before and they are usually around $100-$130 (aud) for one kit. They do have a lot of lights, and the cables are well hidden. Even though they are in seperate elements its still quite easy to setup. This means its quite easy to DIY. They have instructions online and because they work from the bottom up you can test the lights as you go. The lights are very sturdy while still being really thin which is a big upside aswell.

I've just taken the plunge on the LMB kit for Rivendell. Big dollars... but I've already spent $800 on this set so why not round it out to the even grand? [laughs hysterically] Wish me luck! (Seriously though I am justifying it as a $199 lamp for the corner of the living room.)

Figuring out how best to light up a Lego set, never mind a whole Lego city, is a daunting prospect. Thank you for taking the time to help explain the differences between all the different brands and how they work-and especially how they can go wrong. I hope that everyone who might be starting to go down this path will watch this, and part 2 before they start. It will undoubtedly save them a lot of time and aggravation (and perhaps money.) I've used Game of Bricks for all my lighting and I think they are superb. Something you didn't mention is that many Game of Brick sets also include the option for remote control and sound! Sound can add another level of "wow" to sets such as the Lamborghini Sian, Ghostbusters Ecto-1, R2-D2 and Back to the Future Delorean.

@@danielgraham5199Length of time can’t be answered because it varies wildly on the set. They are not difficult but you need some patience and care. They have lots of photos and you will obviously need to dismantle some sets, but this is explained in the instructions. As @HighTeaToys says, start with a small set first to see if it is good for you.

The LMB wireless power connectors are amazing. I've added them to so many sets that are too huge to move around. Like the Friends apartment. I split it into 3 sections and just used the wireless connectors so its easier to move and plug in.

Lego is expensive but also compared to other hobbies it has some cost advantages which is that every set comes with everything you need in the box, and further upgrades are optional. Compare this to other "miniature" building hobbies like trains, soldiers, dioramas etc where you need to purchase the kit first (for similar prices to Lego!) and then on top of that all the glue, paint, tools, and esoterica like "flock" for grass. Light kits cost around $80-$200 for the big sets, and I think anyone who has painted Warhammer miniatures would say "what, ONLY $80-$200?!" 🤣

I just wanna say you are awesome and this video is incredible!! I was looking for information for lighting kits for the large Hogwarts castle and watching install videos was making me think this may be too complicated for this set. Your explanation for the individual brands and even suggestion to use fairy lights was just the best. I feel more confident in buying these now for sets but am going to start small like you suggested as this is my first purchase. For now fairy lights make the castle looks great with all the stained glass viewed from the front. I have a few smaller Star Wars sets I am going to start with before I eventually spend the money for castle legit lights. You are the best and I subscribed for sure. Thanks again!!

Loved the video! I have experience with Briksmax & Lightailing but I'm currently comparing light sets for the Natural History Museum which is how I found your video. I have 8 Modulars in last 3 yeara & all have lights here's how I got on. My first ever Lego was the Diner Modular and installed Briksmax lights as I built it. When I opened the box & saw the contents my mind was blown! But I soon got in to it & I was blown away when they worked perfectly at the end. I have zero electrical knowledge and I had no lego experience so it is possible to jump straight in with Briksmax if you enjoy a challenge. My next was Assembly Square and I tried Lightailing and I agree with your agree with your assessment, sure it was easier to install but I hated all the separate USB's. I got a hub at first & it was near a socket so it was OK but then I moved them into Ikea glass cabinets with no power so I have them all plugged into power banks which was not suited for the Lightailing so I eventually replaced the lights with Briksmax. I did another 6 Modulars all with Briksmax lights. I too have had excellent customer service with Briksmax they have replaced everything that has been a problem even if it was my fault & they are very quick at responding to emails. I have had issues where something has shorted & either stopped all lights working or it drains the power bank mega quick. You have to check every single wire until you find the culprit. Last time it was the very first light I put in so I didn't find it until the very end of the process which was Soooo frustrating! Now I'm looking at lights for the Natural History museum and Briksmax isn't ticking all the boxes this time, it has amazing internal detailing but the outside is lacking in comparison to others and I'm considering get 2 sets, Lightailing & Briksmax having compared. The other 2 mentioned are mainly concentrating on the outside. It'll be the first time I do this so I've no idea how it'll turn out! I love my modulars, I get as much enjoyment from looking at them as I do building them and that in large part is because of lights, there is no way that I would build a modular and not have lights! Heads up: From the Boutique Hotel on theren are no more wires connecting floors Briksmax now have connector plates.

Thanks for this! I've only ever used Light My Bricks (and only twice now on Boutique Hotel and Police Station). Both of them are gorgeous and weren't TOO hard for this beginner to install, but they were definitely pricey. I will definitely look into Game of Bricks and Briksmax in the future, but I feel like I've spoiled myself with Light My Bricks that I don't know if I could let go of some of the features, even if if they cost more. I'm looking to light my Bookshop next, and to me Light My Bricks just looks so much better - even though the cost is like double. It's tough, but as somebody who doesn't have a lot of room, I just want the sets I have to look the best that I can make them look. I would really like to learn how to run my own lights and solder the wires myself at some point, but I haven't quite gotten there yet. Looking forward to your FAQ video!

No worries at all, I would love to try Light my Bricks as they do look amazing, but the price has always seriously scared me off. I find it really hard to justify. I think they do a great DIY range too so you could always buy elements from them if you wanted to make your own light kits, no need to solder just yet. This was kind of what I meant with figure out where your priorities are, the Light my Bricks ones definitely have a lot of premium features and if you are okay with the price they are the nicest looking one in my opinion. If you have instagram I'd love to see some videos of the ones you have as I am very curious :)

I know what you mean by making the set look the best that it can. Even though some light kits are a fraction of Light My Bricks cost, it would always irk me knowing it's not the best.😭 In some rare instances I do actually like the finished lit product of other companies more....(rare). If you can afford it, I would always choose the one you think looks the best! DIY would be so much cheaper I bet.. please let me know if you find some good tutorials on DIY light kits! thx

I tried lighting a few modular sets, and ended up removing the lights. Even tho they look really cool at a distance (and make for wonderful pictures), I didn't like the extra stress put on a lot of bricks. A lot of the tiles wouldn't (and couldn't) connect properly, even following at best how you're supposed to wiggle around the wires ; same thing with bricks. I get the appeal, but I guess I have too much OCD for proper brick connection :p

Great and very helpful overview of some major brands for LEGO light kits! Especially for beginners like me. Thanks a lot! I personally found that I will have issues to handle tiny wires (always hated wires mess created for all electrical countless devices) and I decided to go with lights having integrated batteries and ideally being remotely controlled (maybe only exclusion for wires I would do for streetlights, where the wires can be hidden easily under the ground tiles). This also allows me an easy access to the different levels of buildings like the original LEGO kits without scarifying any playability. Any idea for companies providing battery integrated lightning blocks with remote? I have found several, but with integrated switch in the light block, you would need manually to turn on/off.

I shelf display my modulars around 2 walls of the home office using kit shelving (the white melamine with matching brackets/wall rails you can get in Wickes, B&Q etc). I recently decorated the room, and part of that was to provide a usb outlet for each modular without any trailing cables down the walls from using powered usb hubs. So, enter dado trunking. The sort of stuff you see in actual offices, I.T rooms, hospitals. Single socket plates spaced every 50cm, with two powered usb phone charger outlets per socket plate at 2.1A total. Hence local power for all my modulars, no sharing the same source provided by one or two hubs. No trailing wires, all tucked away neatly at the back of the shelving. Happy days

My question is whether or not you think it would be possible to raise one of the buildings (similar to basements on outside of house) to allow "drop space" for all the connectors. It would take some planning - and lots of bricks. I'm very interested in your thoughts on this idea. Absolutely love your VLOGs. I can turn a bad day around just by watching you!

Great information. I've had some bad experiences with the "wire the connections yourself" kits - wiring the Haunted House I blew a few lights because not all lights took the same power - too much power and there was a "pop" and a small puff of smoke - oops. Lightailing is as plug and play as you can get, but you will miss the opportunity to light things like individual candles in the chandelier of the Disney Castle. I wish this video was around when I started lighting Lego. You provided so much great information.

Next out was the christmas tree. Here i went for Lightaling /brixmax type. Thank you mega-much for this video, H.T.T.! I'm highly interested in illuminating my LEGO Spaceship collection, and this video has helped me tremendously in knowing what to look for when investigating illumination kits, indeed! Cheers, my fellow LEGO-Nerd! Liked | Subscribed

I was looking for my first lighting set to use with Starry Nights. I am leaning towards LMB because from what I have seen the set with remote is only one that allows the lights, whether stars or houses, to twinkle, blink.

My ecto-1 and Delorian I went with Kyglaring as they do awesome light and sound kits. They are expensive but so worth it. My Disney castle and looping coaster I went for light my bricks and they did a great kit for the castle, the looping coaster one of the light strips the adhesive isn’t great and I got to the P and it doesn’t quite stick very well but other than that it’s ok. I got around that with some double sided 3M tape.

Thanks for the informative video! I own over 700 LEGO sets (not all are built :p) but never got interested in lighting them up. Now that I recently purchased the Eiffel Tower and Colosseum together with some coffee tables for a new display project in one of the corners of my living room, I got really excited about lighting those 2 up. I doubt that interest will jump over to my rows of City and Ninjago modular rows (similar to yours) but who knows. :) I compared the Lightailing and Light My Bricks sets for the Colosseum and I prefer the Light My Bricks one for sure, since you can change the light colour inside the colosseum and - just like you mentioned - Light My Bricks seems a bit more realistic in their lighting placement. There is no kit for the Eiffel Tower yet, but if they do something close to how it’s lit up in real life (lights flashing for a brief moment near midnight) then I’m all sold on that one. Also the Colosseum will be lit with warm yellow lights, the Eiffel Tower (hopefully) with cold white light. Super excited about this project, especially since I visited the Colosseum last summer and the Eiffel Tower during the summer of 2021 (I live in Belgium myself).

Nice verbal breakdown of comparisons. I would've really liked to have seen examples of you actually installing the different lights to get a clear indication of the details involved with each option. Perhaps that could be something for another video. (I'll have a look at your channel, as well - you may be well ahead of me and already posted something like that). Thanks!

Came across this video, and appreciate this! I do stopmotion, and want to do some night scenes, and I need to consider lighting for some of my scenes. Thanks for this. I think I"ll be checking out Light My Bricks and Game Brick.

Intrinsic value. What matters to you may not matter to me. I think the light kits are very cool. Just like lighting your house with Christmas lights. Not everyone does it.

Just been getting into. I started with Briksmax for my winter sets. And man those are ridiculous to run wires under bricks. I got light tailing for my ATAT and was kind of surprised/disappointed that they were pretty simple and lacked the customability you described.

hey Chris yeah Light Tailing and Light my Bricks are really disappointing for me in the case of EIFFEL Tower :( LMB is way too simple, a simple wire pulled through the tower for the money like EUR 160, while Games of Bricks offers professional LED strips for like EUR 116 with remote control

I've tried all these brands and Game od Bricks is by far my favourite, excellent customer service, great effects, sound and remote operation. Light my bricks are the worst, their pricing is just insane, and they use the same parts and effect boards as Game of Bricks.

Nice video, have you been thinking about adding a let strip under the middle desk, so it can light up the roofs of the buildings on the ground? Would look epic.

I use battery LED lights from The Hobby or craft shops. They are about 5 dollars. Cut them as needed some use coated magnet wire which id even small then the "kits"

The lights on your buildings look amazing! Personally, I have neither the patience nor wiring expertise to really make it worth pursuing for me. (I remember the video of you installing a few a couple weeks (months?) Ago) They really do bring a lot of life to a display though, so more power to anyone who can get through installing them!

I think that is a very fair outake. I dipped my toe in the water with lights kits over a year ago for the first time and thought I wouldn't get any more after then. But I have come around to them now. They are very fiddly though. Once installed they are great but they make a lot of things more difficult. Like moving things around etc.

I didn't even think about the transportation! I'm not 100% sure, but have you ever heard of the i-brix prototype lighting system? It's still under development, but it uses a wireless power transmitter baseplate to light up the LED bricks. These, I think, would be cool to mess around with for lighting a smaller building, and I think they'd make for an interesting comparison video!

@@kibavee3295 People keep mentioning it. It sounds super cool, though I'd like to see it mass produced first as I am not really somebody that likes to may a premium for light kits. I really hope it'll become a reality at some point.

Jangbricks did kinda a neat video on them a few years ago, certainly they're not going to look quite as natural as a more custom designed lighting kit in their current state. Right now my only lighting in my layout is a flickering LED tea light sitting inside one of my Lego houses (kinda like a fireplace) Someday I may work up the courage to do a bit more!

Awesome, appreciate this video so much! One question: Is there a difference in the quality of the LED, ie colours and brightness and flame elements?
@HighTeaToys
@HighTeaToys 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Between the different ones I personally own I can’t see much difference. Though I don’t have any flickering special effect ones. The main difference I find is the colour choice but between the three brand I own I’ve not noticed massive differences. I would be curious to see the light my bricks one in person to see. The brightness is mostly dependant on how you power them. They can look really bright if you only have ine kit to a plug. But if you plug more in the brightness goes down. My diner has a special effects board where you get a remote so you can se the brightness. It never comes across perfect in camera though. It much easier to judge when you see it in real life. Hope that makes sense.

My biggest problem... longevity. I built a custom 7-11, added lights from Aliexpress. I never turn things off. Some burnt out after just 1 month. Think I', going to look into those lights that require NO batteries or USBs, that just take power wirelessly from a nearby pad.

Great detail in this video. What type of light is good to light up the sides of the buildings? I suppose that's often referred to as architectural lights. What do you think has worked best for you?
@HighTeaToys
@HighTeaToys 2 жыл бұрын
It hugely depends what brick you are sticking it into or on top of and the effect you want. I think just a stud light in a transparent brick works well (see how the bookshop townhouse outside light is made) or for the bank there is a strip light in the arch brick.

the issue i had with my light kits is that once they are installed in my sets (parisian restauraunt and Book shop set) cant open and close them to look at all the floors because all the cables arent long enough to remove roofs. I think the new lights have bricks in them bricks so you can open and close your modular buildings to look inside.

22:20 makes more sense to say "ampage" instead of "voltage" there, or just "power", or best to just say "plug". USB is supposed to be constant 5.0 volts no matter what. Your not splitting the voltage when you add more into it.

I just did an DIY approach to my Longneck Lego set from Horizon Zero Dawn I bought LEDs made some holes into my lego ( I know a deadly sin but I dont plan to ever take this model apart ) and lay the cables myself and making a little thingy to make the trafic light blink on and off but off the shelve options are always cool and I only wanted to light up the parts that are light up in game so no spotlights or anthing like that

It is hard to say as I haven't build the eiffel tower muself not really compared the different options out on the market. I personally would say have a look at all the different brands and how they light the set up. Pay close attention to if you see any wires etc. and just go with the one you like the look of best. They are all going to be very fiddly I think.

Decided I like the game of bricks one for performance and budget I just wondered, do the lights come on (on the last settings) if I hooked the mains unit up to a smart plug to automate to turn on and off certain times each day? Or with the remote version, once turned off does it *require* the power button to be pressed to turn it back on once power is added? Hope that makes sense Also is it possible to just have the lights on with no sound? (On the sound game of bricks ones)
