I was a Coastside resident and drove that treacherous stretch of dark, twisting two-lane road thousands of nights over my eight years of living in Half Moon Bay. The 1980s were wet years and we Coastsiders experienced a half-dozen closures of the Slide, along with closures of the main road east, Cal 92 "over-the-hill" to San Mateo. Two of our three sons were born during that period of my life, and with simultaneous closures of both Highways 1 and 92, the isolation of Coastside families from a full-time medical facility was a terrifying prospect. I'll likely never have an opportunity to travel that familiar route again, this time through your beautiful tunnel, but I congratulate the determination of Coastside residents for finally building this safe and reliable access to and from your communities.

I miss Devil's Slide. As you come out of Pacifica heading South, I loved the view you got just as you crested the top and turned to the Left, and there in front, below, and to both sides was The Pacific Ocean in all of it's Glory. Granted that the tunnel was needed, but that run has never been the same since they built it. Still, Well Done CalTrans.

The road is still there you just need to walk or bike or run to see it. e bike may also be allowed.

I will definitely have to visit. I love the tunnels to the sea here in SoCal (two into the Malibu area and the other in Santa Monica from the I-10 freeway onto north bound historic Highway 1) and I’m sure this addition to the north coast will bring some of that same magic to travelers there!

I lived in Marina CA, just north of the Monterey area. I have driven the devil's slied area multiple times. The View of the Pacific ocean was always breath taking. I all so remember several times that portion of the Highway being close. I move away in 2004 and have never seen the new routing.

The part of Highway 1 that is bypassed by the tunnel is now a recreational trail. I have walked it too many times to count. It is so steep in parts--up to a 9% grade if I remember correctly.

I thought this tunnel would NEVER get built. I first heard about devils slide way back in 1983 when I was a 12 yr old 5th grader. Through the years I heard the same debate; tunnel or not which led me to believe this wouldn’t ever happen. Still amazed every time I ride my motorcycle through that tunnel.

Why does 380 westbound from the airport go slightly beyond 280 where it intersects and then a portion of 380 heads directly into the side of the mountain at this spot and completely dead ends? Was there a plan at one time to also build a tunnel extending 380 westbound through the mountain and to connect along the coast with CA 1 but was never undertaken? I always wondered about why 380 did not simply intersect with 280 but had that tiny segment go toward the mountain, as if to enter a tunnel at that spot. It even looks like that would be the spot a tunnel would have begun. Does someone on Caltran know why?
@harpsealSF2 ай бұрын
Your guess is correct. It was planned to eventually connect to Pacifica. I use the term "planned" very loosely. I have tried commenting with some links to info on it, but KZbin keeps shadowbanning the comments for some reason.

I drove on the part that is now bypassed at least once, in the summer of '89, going northbound. It would have been just another stretch of highway to me. I remember years later seeing political signs in Pacifica or Half Moon Bay that said "Think Tunnel".

Yep, I remember in 1990s my boss who lived and commuted from HMB had a bumper sticker, "Think Tunnel" with that illustration.

That`s great you finally got your Tunnel built. Was talked about long enough, and all the dignatery`s are all happy now. I retired from Caltrans back in 2006, and funny all the bickering and negative that kept get slung around back then. Typical government. After all the years of setting aside Bicycle lanes, you still need to paint a stencil to tell them which side to ride on and an Arrow to tell which direction to go. When are bicycles going to be taxed a Road Tax? They need to pay their fair share. Cost millions to build the tunnel, now millions to maintain the Bicycle lane. It will eventually fall into the Ocean and or slides onto the road.

It was much much much longer than 10 years. Caltrans was set on a 6 lane freeway over the top of Montara Mountain since the 1950’s. Various revisions were made to that plan changing it from 6, to 4, to 2 with full passing lanes (all on a 6 lane roadbed). Tiny little coastal town of Montara, managed the get a measure on the county ballot and it’s overwhelming passage forced Caltrans to finally give up on it massive freeway project.
