Such a underrated song.. The text is amazingly written, the voice is beyond everything and the guitar playing is just plain beautiful - Although, it's Bruce I'm talking about, he never disappoint.

I used to listen to this song when I was in college and the album just came out. I remember traveling back home to Chicago and thinking that I'll just go off and forget my regular life or feeling that something could really drive me to do something like the song says. Maybe this song called my bluff and prevented me from doing something really bad.

blue - totally agree. That phrase (is it a stanza?) is my favorite - no lyrics in the last 4-count..silence... as he lets the last words linger and drift, flying alongside the car along the dark road this song is easily my favorite for visual imagery ("l slept the sleep of the dead, I didn't dream") and confessions/epiphany ("I told myself it was all something in her, but as we drove I knew it was something in me") thanks for your post, Blue -

as an aspiring songwriter, it doesn`t get better than this! T.G.O.T.J album is pure poetry sung by a weathered soul. Check the "LIVE IN DUBLIN" dvd too, probably the best concert I`ve seen without being there. Long live The Boss!

I slipped off her shoe She was a perfect size 7 I said there's no smokin in the store ma'am She crossed her legs and then We made some small talk That's where it should have stopped She slipped me her number I put it in my pocket My hand slipped up her skirt Everything slipped my mind In that little roadhouse On Highway 29 It was a small town bank It was a mess Well I had a gun You know the rest Money on the floorboards Shirt was covered in blood She was crying Her and me we headed south On Highway 29 In a little desert motel the air was hot and clean I slept the sleep of the dead I didn't dream I woke in the morning Washed my face in the sink We headed into the Sierra Madres cross the borderline The winter sun shot thru the black trees I told myself it was all something in her But as we drove I knew it was something in me Something that's been coming for a long long time Something that was here with me now On Highway 29 The road was filled with broken glass and gasoline She wasn't saying nothing It was just a dream The wind come silent thru the windshield All I could see was snow + sky + pines I closed my eyes and I was running I was running then I was flying
