I knew my girlfriend since she was seven and I was nine she was my neighbor. In 1980 when this song came out, I was 19 and she was 17 we dated. She was a shy, blonde haired, beautiful girl, and I came from a terrible background. I was the captain of the football team, pretty popular and pretty much a tough guy since I had to be due to my upbringing ,at 19 and 17 she was expecting and we got married. I had to drop out of college. She has become a stay at home mom as a baby her self. We got married like this song describes. I got a job in construction & a union card at 19 years old, we have now been married 42 years. It has not been easy, but we never quit. She is the most beautiful woman still inside and out. By the grace of God we are still together and have a thriving business . God is good. There are no mistakes in life just unexpected. Blessings!!!!

Well born in 98 in far East of Russia. I remember my dad taking us to the sea side with this tune on, i remember it as good as if it was yesterday. My dad played this album so much when I was a kid that I could sing every song on the album by heart. This song was and still is my favorite. I grew up in a small town in Ohio right on the Ohio river. It has always reminded me of my parents and where I grew up. The river offers a baptismal soul-cleansing. When the narrator was young it never mattered how bad things in life got because he (and Mary) could go down to the river and somehow that would make everything alright - at least for a little while. This is why the symbolism towards the end of the song is so damn heartbreaking. In the end even the river isn't there anymore. It dried up. Now there's no escape, no source of redeption for the narrator. You grow up and there's nothing that can make things right anymore. Springsteen is a pretty switched-on writer - and I think he's hip to the multiple layers of meaning that can be contained in a rich powerful song like this.

Never really looked at the symbolism that way but I think you nailed it. She was 16 I was eighteen on my ninetenth birthday she delivered me a son who only weighed 3 pounds 6 ounces. The doctor who delivered him, not the one we had paid, told me he didn't have a chance. Went down to the NIC unit to see him before he passed but the nurses all hugged and guarented me he'd be fine and 6 weeks later we brought him home. Then we went down to the river and into the river we dived, He's a strapping young man 5'10 170# The marriage soon fell apart and I raised him alone from the time he was three. Then I met the most beautiful woman who wrapped her love around both of us and our lives were complete.

I have a worksheet with questions and discussion points. The song is about a place where most people's joys and carefree days end after high school. You don't go off to college, you do "what you'r daddy done." When there is still promise in his life, it is referenced through green fields and flowing rivers, Mary is tanned and "wet" skin from the reservoir;. Water and greenery are symbols of life. At this point, he and Mary are so. close there is not even any physical distance between them- he holds her tight to hear her breath. Compare this to after the pregnancy, when there is nothing but physical and emotional distance. They act like they "don't remember" and "pretend that they don't care,'" yet he imagines the old days, riding out to the reservoir in his brother's car. The teenage paradise they were supposed to have for another year or two is gone, and notice the absence of life/hope: there are no flowers at the wedding and the river is now dry. Did anyone notice that there is not even a mention of a baby or momentary joy from parenthood? the ending of the song is very stark. The students in 2018 end up loving and appreciating the song. It's evident from their written reflections that most of them can relate. Music is a gift and I also end up using Bowie, Dylan, Sting,, U2, Run DMC and others. When you use music to teach, it does take some time to integrate it into the curriculum and make it meaningful/relevant. Maybe on the last day, I'll throw on the Springsteen Greatest Hits cd and say, "Just shut up and listen, Motherphukkers, it's the Boss!" Sorry I went on so long...

I think I was your age too the first time I heard this song. My Dad always taught me to listen to the lyrics and the story they are telling you. Bruce is one of the best at this. That's a BOLD statement, man, especially going up against live performances like The Who "A Quick One While He's Away" from The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus '68, The Eagles "A New Kid In Town" from D.C. '76, The Allman Brothers Live at The Fillmore, Little Feat "Waiting For Columbus," The Band "The Last Waltz," Frampton Comes Alive, Rush "Xanadu" Live '81, etc. And I didn't even mention The Beatles or Led Zep. As a young kid, father somehow gave me this CD 💿 ( it was 1997-98 then, post war Croatia 🇭🇷), and I started to listen ,but I couldn't understand one word ,I didn't speak English back then. At the back of the cd, there were written all the songs and lyrics. I started to listen and read and use my mom's English dictionary to find the meaning of each word. Believe it or not, that's how I learned English,and later realised that Bruce was born on the same day as I am .😮 He's still my favourite singer...

It hits the heart so hard, man. How many of us have been young, taking our young lover down to the lake or river because we were all too broke to do anything else? Just remembering those times is such a trigger for the goosebumps. If you never been there, I'm sorry. I'll always remember those times, coming back from the lake with my long-lost sweetheart, just fully exhausted from being in the water and sun all day, and driving back as the sun set. Now she's passed away 9 years, and I'll never return to the places we shared, like hanging out at the Red River, and Lake Murray, and Lake Texoma. The world is big and some places just hurt too much. My hero. I have all of his albums and I finally bought The Ties That Bind box set yesterday. It took me more than a year to be able to afford it as I have been unemployed until recently. My youth is passing and life isn't going the way I expected it too. At times I feel depressed and like giving up. Memories, good and bad, haunt me and make every day a struggle. Sometimes I need to go to a place that feels familiar and safe. Even if it isn't perfect. I guess the guy in this song had the river, a memory of the river sustains him even if by that point it was a dry, drained riverbed. He just needs that reminder of what good happened in life, a reminder that all the rubbish in life was worth the struggle. I guess we all have that place. For me, it may just be this music. This is my familiar place. My good memory. Springsteen writes songs that feel like lessons being given by an old wise friend. I just cannot get over the beauty of this song. I am glad I have this concert on DVD. As soon as I have time I am going to sit and watch this and be in awe.

Springsteen has given us decades of unforgettable music. But for me, that period book-ended by "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "The River" was the crowning achievement of his career. Those two albums, and all the live recordings in the two years or so between them, were like nothing before or since. And this song and performance encapsulate all of that in seven minutes of heart-breaking beauty. BTW, Roy Bittan never gets enough credit for his piano work during this period.

Eben I love Bruce's music, but I didn't 'get' most of it until I had some life experience. Now I get it. As for music today, the sad thing is that there is great music out there; it just is becoming harder to find. Most people don't listen to the radio anymore (I don't either) and if they do they hear artists who are already established. But that's how I discovered Springsteen in the first place. A local college radio station introduced me to R.E.M. in the early 80s (yeah, I'm old!). MTV was cool back in the day, when they actually played music. Local, small live-music venues have been disappearing for years now. It's just more difficult for artists these days to find an audience.
