Good scripts, alot of veteran character actors from NOIR era making appearances, great looking ladies (bad and good) with some physical car chases and shoot outs. Add a leading man who is the prototype of the hard driving police officer and great leader. Younger staff working in the background (camera, location selection, costumes and makeup) many of whom went on to bigger careers. Well managed production company. This makes for a show which is still EXCELLENT 50 plus years later!

At this point Highway Patrol had already aired several helicopter episodes. Helicopters were still a novel device to the public and we wanted to see more of them. A series was developed about this time called "The Whirlybirds" which featured the same type of Bell '47 helicopter and pilot.

The crooks were doomed from the very beginning. Not good to stumble on to a cop in a diner, especially in a rural area where the local cop knows all the local cars. Another Christine featured here as now virtually all 1957-58 Plymouths are known. @@danielsnader6549 I was too isolated. I lost my husband to cancer in 2004 when he was 45 and I was 42. I worked on that house and spent almost 16 years alone. Just working on the house, taming down possums and raccoons, and just being alone all the time. I even went through breast cancer alone in 2011. I decided to sell the night the coyotes were within 5 feet of me, and I shot the shotgun off to scare them away and I was screaming. Not a single one of the 5 neighbours heard. I have severe rheumatoid arthritis, and there was a clawfoot tub I had converted as a shower too. I have knees bone to bone and I had a hard time climbing in and out of that tub. I couldn't afford to finish the 2nd bathroom and like I said, I was totally alone. I miss the place, believe me, but I had to get to a place that if I fell and died, I would be missed after a couple weeks instead of a couple months.

My sister and I could watch Whirlybirds after we flew back from the fields with mom and dad. My sisters and my job were as flaggers at each end of a field. It seems at that time people didn't know that a helicopter does not need to move in order to fly . As it seems calling for backup when you have a radio , and you could have had ten cops surrounding the house in around a half hour some with machine guns if you like . The helicopter could had hovered ten feet over the house to get a good shot . That being said I love this show in almost every episode somebody gets shot and if it's a suspect seldom survive . And I am impressed with Dan's marksmanship with what appears to be a Colt detective special with a two inch barrel that had the ability to hit a garage door from twenty feet about half the time .

A hovering helicopter is easy to hit. A two inch barrel on a revolver can hit a can every time at 25 yatds, hand held. Its intrinsic accuracy is even better. Thanks for sharing.

*If the helicopters on this show look familiar, it because the same Bell Model 47's were used in M*A*S*H. No hydraulics. Pilot had to manhandle everything. Pilots had to use both feet, both arms, and both hands to maintain flight. FYI, the same pilots flew the choppers all 11 years of The MASH series.*

Could also be the scrip was written before it was filmed, by staying with Sedan or Coupe they could use anything they had that was a sedan or a coupe. No delay in filming as they looked for a Ford, Chevrolet Mercury, Desoto, Buick, Pontiac Buick, Mercury, or even a Gambler.
