4 verses: 1 - Willie (highwayman) 2- Kris (sailor) 3 - Waylon (dam builder) 4 - Johnny (star rider) Written by Jimmy Webb ******** The four men came together just to record this one song. It was wildly successful so the group was formed. (People were already calling them the Highwaymen). They stayed together and toured until Johnny & Waylon's health began to fail. ********** Desperados Waiting for a Train is a fabulous Guy Clark song that they recorded. Get the live version.

Kristopherson played the sidekick to Wesley Snipes in the Blade movies. He also wrote 'Me and Bobby McGee' and 'Help Me Make It Through The Night'. Waylon was a very good guitarist. That's him playing his old white guitar at the beginning of every Dukes of Hazzard episode. Waylon also played bass guitar for Buddy Holly and was the first artist signed to Buddy Holly's own record label. On the night that Holly's plane crashed Waylon lost a coin toss with the Big Bopper and gave Bopper his seat the day the music died. Waylon was also the first artist to go double platinum in Country Music. One video I would recommend that you watch is ' The Conversation' with Waylon and Hank Williams Jr singing about Hank's father.

@@TXplowgirl There is a period. Then he says Waylon was a very good guitarist, he also played the guitar at the beginning.... The reason it is called outlaw country is because during that time, country music had its tradional country music, then the Outlaws came along and pushed the plug. These were men that were denied by the Grand Ole Opry at the time, they have since been accepted by traditional country but back in the day they were rebels

Grew up in the 80s with an older father so incidentally ended up with an extremely eclectic taste in music. Later I'd listed to NIN and honestly as much as I connected with the lyrics, the music didn't connect with me. I was amazed when I started to connect with Johnny Cash outside side of traditional country music(in my 20s) when he collaborated with alt rock groups. I felt that I really met Johnny Cash "outside" our country roots. I had so much respect for a man who carried his heart in his music until the last days of his life. The lyrics didn't change much but the voice and delivery of the sound made a huge difference to the way I digested and accepted the message. Really goes to say that the delivery of a song really matters to the people you want to hear it.

This song is all about reincarnation, the spirit living more than one life in this world. I really enjoyed your reactions, but hope you would listen a second time, more carefully - it's a bit deep at first. You guys were talking about the man who fell into the dam, and it made me remember a story about the Fort Peck Dam in Montana. My husband & I were stationed in northeast Montana with the Air Force back in the 1960s, at Glasgow AFB. At that time, nearby Ft Peck Dam was said to be the largest earth-filled dam in the world except for Aswan Dam in Egypt, and being from west Texas we were very impressed by its' sheer size. As we would drive across the highway that was built atop the dam itself, the spillway was huge, one could look down the slant of all that concrete to the water far below. One thing we always thought of was that at least one human being was entombed in that dam; there was a plaque telling of that fact. Apparently, water had been added too swiftly into the earthen portion during a stage of construction, making the earth turn into itself. There was a temporary railroad track across the top surface, carrying workers, and some of those people were swallowed into the dam itself. That story never failed to make me feel so very sad.

In 1969, Kris while in the National Guard stole a helo and landed on Johnny Cash's yard on a Sunday morning. He was a struggling songwriter and wanted to pitch one of his songs to Cash. The song "Sunday Morning Coming Down" was later cut by Johnny Cash. Kris also wrote and performed "Me and Bobby McGee", which was made famous by Janice Joplin. Willie - Highwayman(a robber that traveled stealing from other travelers), Kris a Sailor, Waylon a dam builder, and Johnny the pilot. Outlaw Country was more than just a sound, it was an attitude. Cash was told to stay away from the stage lights at the Grand Ole Opry. During his performance, he moved to the edge of the stage and stomped one of the lights.

Waylon Jennings was the dam builder in the song. It was great these artist performed together. You two need to do "I'll Never Smoke weed with Willie Again" by Toby Keith with Willie on stage. Funny as all get out. Kris Kristofferson wrote "Me and Bobby McGee" Janis Joplin's covered it obviously. He also wrote Cash's hit "Sunday Morning Coming Down". HIs song "Help Me Make It Through the Night" with his ex-wife Rita Coolidge, is worth a listen.

lol @ "I'll never smoke weed with Willie again." I think I've heard more than one person say that about Snoop Dog too. - Keith

@@BourbonCountryReacts Oh, Snoop Dog said Willie was the only person that has ever out smoked him, Snoop had to hit the time out button with Willie. Funny stuff. Watch the live version, not the one that is 3:08 minutes.
