Great that he found James Stacy for this episode. The real life story is that Stacy was hit in 1973 by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle, resulting in the amputation of his left leg and arm, and the death of his girlfriend. Stacy's ex-wife, actress and singer Connie Stevens, organized a 1974 celebrity gala to raise money for his expenses. The gala, whose attendees included Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand, raised $118,000 ($0.7 million today). In 1976, Stacy won a $1.9 million lawsuit ($9.8 million today) against the bar that had served the drunk driver. He returned to acting in 1975 and retired in 1992. He died in 2016 at the age of 79.

As the widow of a veteran i know first hand how the VA treats our brave soldiers who risked their lives ,and gave lives for our freedom. None of them should ever need or want for anything, esp housing, medical and dental ,or food.there are thousands of homeless veterans on the streets and it breaks my heart. Our govt sends billions to foreign countries and dont take proper care of our own vets and their families.

What a humbling experience. Am 42. As a kid growing up in the 80s I saw a few episodes of HTH but never followed up or remembered. Must have been 8 yrs old. While away this past summer in the Great state of Florida on Vacation, my wife and I were flipping through channels and we saw Michael Landon. I remember little house on prairie . We started watching this show. Fell in love. What a good man he was. Up to season 3. This episode, been crying for weeks almost every night. God bless Landon and French. The world needs more shows like this. Too bad the Satanists at Netflix would never create anything like this again.

The way I see veterans is any who have served in military, owns a piece of stock, of the USA, and that means they should get full coverage and benefits of everything. They put their life on the line, for us, so there shouldn't be restrictions. I remember when I was married to my first husband, a vet, he went through about 10years going back and forth trying to get VA to say his medical condition was service connected, so he could get his disability. Finally, after all those years the VA finally said it was service connection. But we sure had gone thru struggles, and hardships before then, but we lived through it. I just couldn't see how someone who fought for this country would have to struggle so to get benefits. One thing I loved about the VA was their hospital, whenever my husband had to go, and I visited, the veterans were all nice to me, and I loved playing pool with them, and other games. It wasn't like a hospital, but a home away from home, with good friends, and I really wanted to work there. Salute to all Veterans.

I felt bad for the guy that bought his lunch. Nowadays it happens all the time out of respect, and people are thankful, but back then it was seen as pity. About thirteen years ago, we lost two officers in a double cop killing here in Charlotte. I attended both funerals. On the way back from the cemetery for the first officer to the church for the wake for the second, I stopped at Arby's (who give the 10% employee discount to first responders) for lunch. The cashier called his manager over, who cleared the till and told me that lunch was on him. I thanked him and did my best to not cry.

Damn right! My spouse and children have dealt with a lot. As both a veteran and a former convict I can say that both groups get bad treatment, but I think that veterans should be considered first and convicts should be rehabilitated more effectively. No running around the yard stirring up sh*t, implement mandatory work schedules and educational requirements, and pay back their victims or debts, however, they should receive adequate medical care, food, and hygiene supplies. I, too have seen what neglect does to countermand the efforts of rehabilitation and giving veterans a new start without being "herded" through the red tape. As this show illustrates, every life is worth saving and it is up to us to make the effort...The rest is up to the person who needs saving. :)

That is total BS. It is full medical coverage. I developed eczema in '94 from a blister I got at work. The VA totally covered all of my treatments and prescriptions. Oh, and don't blow off the eczema as nothing but a skin rash. I honestly thought I was going to lose both feet. It was totally debilitating. Yeah, it was a royal pain paperwork wise but they took care of everything. It cost me a total of something like 8 dollars.

Gripping episode. James Stacy actually lost his arm and leg in a motorcycle accident. When he was 79 he died of anypholiptic shock caused by....antibiotics. ironic isn't it? Watch Lancer if you want to see his pre accident acting.

Actor James Stacy (Joe Mason), is perhaps best known for starring in the late 1960s TV western Lancer. In 1973, Stacy was hit by a drunk driver while driving his motorcycle, resulting in the amputation of his left leg and arm and the death of his girlfriend. He returned to acting in 1975 before retiring in 1992. In November 1995, Stacy pleaded no contest to a charge of molesting an 11-year-old girl.[9] On December 7, 1995, he failed to appear for sentencing in Ventura County Superior Court and was arrested the next day in a Honolulu, Hawaii hospital after having fled California. He attempted suicide by jumping off a cliff. After recovering, Stacy waived extradition and returned to California. On March 5, 1996, Stacy received a six-year prison sentence. The prosecutor in the case initially said she believed Stacy might have been eligible for probation for the molestation, but his post-arrest behavior, coupled with two arrests in June 1995 for prowling at the homes of other girls, led her to seek a prison sentence. He served his sentence at the California Institution for Men in Chino, Ca. Stacy died in 2016, aged 79. He was survived by his ex-wives; actresses Kim Darby, Connie Stevens, & one daughter.

Lots of recycled footage in this episode. The chopper landing, and the car doing a u-turn were in other episodes. Cutting corners in California is the status quo.

ML learned early when he acted as Little Joe on Bonanza, found it cut costs when directing and applied it more when VictorF got sick that fifth season.
