I just bought a Tolhurst HIHP Speed in the Carbon Fibre Black finish in Thunderbolt Black and surfed it for the first time yesterday. If Darth Vader surfed, this would be his board! I have had just one session in fun, pretty soft, waist to chest high waves, slightly smaller than this video. I used Harley’s Longboard Thruster XL fins same as this video, and set the centre fin position exactly as recommended. Initial impressions based on one session only. Overall it’s an incredible board. And the thruster set-up absolutely rips for a longboard. You don’t have to be able to surf as well as Harley to really have lots of fun on this board. The highlights of this board are a) outright speed and acceleration, it’s a lot faster than regular 2+1 longboards, you also can generate more speed on the wave face, by pumping it a little like a big shortboard, further maximizing its speed potential b) light and agile, very maneuverable, a great carving board, suitable for big high speed power carves or tight cutbacks c) when you put in a good cutback you throw serious spray compared to a regular 2+1 set up longboard d) I got to the front to do some cheater 5’s which felt comfortable (I am 54 years, 93kg/185cm/205lb/6’1 - about 5kg/10lb heavier than Harley Ingleby, surfing for 10 years). So I LOVED this board with the thruster set up. And are super excited about getting out again. I also tried the Quad Fin set up. Frankly I struggled a bit with the Quad set up in these conditions. However I understand the quads suit bigger, head high plus surf, and hollower waves. So I’ll be very keen to test that set up in bigger conditions. In terms of padding, it doesn’t paddle as easily as my other bigger boards - 8’6 and 10ft Walden Magic Models. However it is lower litre-age and higher rocker than those boards. And despite this it seemed to catch waves quite well, which is the main thing. So a little weird, but it caught waves better than it felt like it paddled! In summary very stoked and excited to own this board. It was actually a great funboard in fun wave conditions. And of course it has some serious upper end performance potential when the big waves arrive. This is my second Harley Ingleby board. My other is a 7’10 Mid6 in Thunderbolt Red. It is also an outstanding board and the reason why I bought the HIHP Speed. Shout out to Harley Ingleby, Billy Tolhurst, and the Thunderbolt team! 🤙🏄🌊 PS - The Carbon Fibre finish looks so pro-level. It put some serious pressure on me to deliver the goods in the line-up!😂😂😂
