I'm an athiest and I had a friend at Uni who wore the Niquab. It was never a barrier to our friendship, neither were our stances on religion. She completely put up with me asking stupid questions about the niquab and was generous enough to share her story of adopting the niquab with me (her mother doesn't wear one, she spoke to other niquab wearers about their experiences and made her own decision). She was a sweet person, and I learnt to read her emotion from her eyes, the veil wasn't a barrier

Actually, covering with a veil is not as necessary as a hijab cuz it's a choice. But just like hijab, there will be situations where u actually hv to uncover ur veil. for example, face identification when u r going through the process such as going overseas, u hv to show ur face to the officer who checked your passport. Even in the Quran hv mention it. And if u actually bump into someone that wear veil like a car accident, just ask for her id and take a pic of it also the car no plate n bring it to the court, just show it to the judges n she will hv to show her face if it is needed. So I dont really see much prob for it. (yes, the woman's id will hv her own face n it is not covered cuz like I said in various situations u hv to show ur face) hope it clear up ur questions

As Muslim if i am in non Muslim country i will object on two of then one without scarf and one with face cover . The one with face cover is increasing (sorry i don't have much knowledge of depth English) the gape in between Muslims and non Muslims and the one without scarf making no difference but the third one with scarf look exactly as Muslim model . I like the hijab and niqab. Modesty is a personal expression of faith. I'm in the West. I dress modestly and have worn a scarf on and off for years. There have been many times when I would have preferred the niqab. For me it's because I'd like to have a bit more comfort zone outside the home. We do talk on the phone, chat, text and email countless times each day without people needing to see our face. So I really don't understand why people fuss about the niqab so much.

Because the people that the prophet came to warn was arabic speakimg people. Allah says in other vers " We have not sent a messenger except in the languege of his people to clarify (the messege) for them. The Allah leaves whoever he wills to stray and guides whoever he wills. He is all Almighty and All-Wise. ( Qran 14:4 ) Allah is the most wise it is he who created everything and he nows the best so who are we to say something agianst his decisions.

I am college student who works in a warehouse on the side and I can personally say that when everyone wears the same clothes it changes how you relate to them. This is the reason why Buddhists are all shaved and wear the same clothes whether man or woman. I am also a western man and I personally observe in myself the objectification of woman. This whole process happens unconsciously and I try to focus on it and change it whenever it happens. But it is a lot harder to not objectify a woman when she is dressed in a manner that sends certain signals in a mans brain. It has nothing to do with self control of the man, this is something that is almost evolutionary. I meditate and so I am someone who is experienced in focusing on certain perceptions and rectifying them when they are not inline with the truth but even I am not immune against this objectification. It's something most people don't even see in themselves. It is politically correct to say that you do not objectify woman so we tell ourselves "we do not objectify woman" but in fact this happens on a very subtle level. That's why one has to concentrate. The way I stumbled upon this knowledge that I was objectifying woman started of when I asked the question why I feared certain woman. (usually attractive woman). And I began to think about this question and my fear stemmed purely from the physical, I was intimidated by it, the girl could be an amazing girl but I would not see her personality at all. I had a much easier time approaching more "conservative" woman because when I looked at them, instead of immediately having something triggered in me that would objectify them I see them as human beings. This is another thing about objectification, when a beautiful girl enters somewhere, I literally forget that she is human being, therefore I do not interact with her as I should. One way to infuse humanness in my perception of scantly clad woman was to imagine them aging and loosing all their physical attractive parts. This visualization would bring me back to reality so to speak. I would then be able to see her humanness. I also live in European country with many muslim woman so when I was meditating while sitting on the metro and thinking about all of this I suddenly understood the whole Hijab Niqab thing. Its origins came from this same battle that I was fighting within myself everyday. The more modern our societies have become the more people wanted to make themselves unique from the rest, and in the process we forget that we are actually all the same no matter how much make-up we wear or how our chest looks. This is a deep spiritual battle and I'm on the side of Islam on this, I totally understand them. But on another level this veiling can have a bad effect on the harmony in non arabic communities as it does put more barriers up and that is never a good thing. These barriers only exist when it happens in the west in the arabic worlds this is probably normal. The niqab can also act as something objectifying, again perhaps this is only in the psyche of a western person like myself, but If I see a woman in niqab on the streets just as the scantly clad woman I do not see her humanness. Its strange.

In an age of security cameras, masks, balaclavas, niqabs, scarves wrapped over faces are all concerns. So when the Niqab-wearing woman in this video says "I don't understand how just because I've covered my face, that makes it harder for others to respect me and treat me like a human being..." well, she's kind of bringing it on herself. She's completely dehumanizing herself because she's removing the ability for others to recognize her as a human being using the most easily recognizable aspect... her face.

+Kevin Walter People can recognise a niqabi with just their eyes and by the way they talk and walk and the way they sound. I wear niqab and people I interact with often do recognise me. In fact if I go without my niqab in front of people who recognise me in niqab, they wouldn't recognise me by my face. They would only recognise me in niqab. Covering face does make other people uncomfortable and other women wearing short dresses makes me and many other people I know uncomfortable but I don't go around saying to those other women that don't wear short dresses it makes me uncomfortable. Of course they would get offended if I say that and of course I have no right to dictate them what they should wear and not wear for my own comfort. The same way I don't want other people telling me what to wear and not to wear. It's my choice. I will do what I want to do, I will wear what I want to wear, either if other people are not comfortable around me. It's their problem that they are judging me not mine. I'm speaking on behalf of the women who are bullied because of wearing niqab. To be honest not all Muslims believe Niqab is compulsory. I think you conflated two different issues here: without the hijab people can judge a woman based on her looks (bodily features, hair, skin etc.)- the way she, as an individual, looks. With the hijab however these things are not apparent anymore: so all that remains for people to judge with regards to her appearance is her dress. It is a different type of judgement. The first thing is to be judged based on how you as a person look with your unique features. The seccond thing is to be judged because people don't like the way you dress: in that case they either don't like Islam, this concept of modesty etc. Whatever their opinion might be.

I don't have anything against Muslim women wearing a hijab, but my personal opinion is that a niqab is a little bit too much. Your face is like one of your identifications and if you choose to wear a niqab you have to expect people to get scared and keep themselves away from you and wonder what you're really up to. I'm not saying it's because you're a Muslim, no, just because you cover almost your entire face and that scares people off. If I would wear a mask or something like that and walk around in public people would be scared of me to and wonder what I'm up to, probably if the police saw me they would even ask me to take it off. Yes I know these women who wears niqab wears them for a religious purpose but that isn't a excuse, it's fine to just wear a hijab, then you're at least still showing your face. If you want to cover your hair you know what fine, that's totally up to you. So it's about security for everyone in our society as well. Also I think a niqab can scare people of because it's often associated with the extreme Islam. 2. No the quran does not say men are in charge of women. Quran says men are the caretaker of women. He would take care of her financial needs, basic needs(including her security), physical needs, emotional needs and spiritual needs. Allah uses the word "Qayum" and it means to take care of something. In Islam it is only Allah who is in charge of us and considering anyone else other than Allah as you in charge is a major sin. And Allah declares men to take care of women not because they are weaker or something but because they are precious.

As a Christian, I could not care less if a woman covers herself completely. My concern is when the face may be required to be shown for: 1. Identification 2. When in court especially as a defedant, plaintiff, or witness 3. Being questioned by authorities for a case, especially in an interogation By which Muslim women may refuse to do so due to spiritual and modesty reasons. These instances are not about taking away ones modesty nor intends to violate spirituallity, but administering investigation, law, justice, and personal identification. It is undoubtedly abused by some in authority, but it does not give us the right to resist authorities and disregard the laws of the land. I mentioned that before already somewhere else and I want to say it here too. A western woman who is working or travelling to a Islamic country would surely not walk around in micro shorts, heels and a belly free top without a bra. We have to respect their cullture and religion and when they decide to live in a western country, then they shouldn´t expect that we tolerate their dressing style unless they tolerate ours. In turkish schools covering the head is not allowed, but in Germany turkish girls can be seen covered. We tolerate things in our countries that aren´t even allowed in theirs and that is over the limit of religious freedom. If you want to wear a Niqab, Burka, Hijab or whatever, then stay in your country and live your traditions and believs there. We don´t want to see that crap in our streets same as you don´t want to see sexy girls in your streets. I´m not a muslim or Islam hater. But what I realized lately is that Muslims in Western Countries expect or even demand too much. They want to walk around like the modern version of Darth Vaders Storm Troopers, they want a mosque in every bigger City. In France they are blocking entire roads because they have to pray etc. Enough is enough. Do Christians who live in middle eastern countries demand a Catholic Cathedral right in the Center of Teheran, Kabul or Dubai for example? In some countries it is also expected from our woman to be covered up like muslim woman. In muslimic countries we have to respect this and that just to stay out of trouble. Maybe we should do the same thing. By law every muslima is forced to wear normal dresses like our woman do and then we will see how many are left in our countries.

In college there was this girl that came up to me wearing a niqab, we had small talk and I realized that talking to someone wearing a niqab is such a diffrent experience then talking to someone without. Its human nature to judge others especially about their physical looks, but with this girl I couldn't judge her based on that, just simply on what she was saying, people who are considered physically beautiful usually are the ones who get ahead in life but if everyone wore a niqab we'd all have to rely on our personalities and hard work.

I love hijab, I used to wear it and then I lose my way and took it off... I am so excited to start wearing it again. However I do not think I am better than anyone else especially other Muslim women just because I wear hijab. I think hijab is better but like the Pakistani woman said the Quran doesn't directly tell you to wear it. I don't think niqab is necessary but I also don't have any problem with women who choose to wear it. I admire them. I admire women who wear hijab and I admire women who don't! So, Islamic scholars don't disagree on this, only non-studied Muslims. Regarding this, "better woman" political correctness, of course a women is a better Muslim for wearing it compared to not. But, it is merely one thing that adds to her. Other things may take away from her goodness or add to it. So, wearing it is obviously better than not. Yes, people can't judge how good a Muslim woman is by her covering alone, but it is supposed to bring women closer to Allah.

I think there is a part in the Quran that a veiled woman must remove it in court if the judge orders you to do so. The comment the veiled woman makes about talking on the phone is rubbish. When one person is speaking to another on the phone, they are on an even footing. When they are in the presence of the other, it is no longer an even footing, as one lies open and "readable" while the other remains hidden and inscrutable. Why does it bother me? It bothers me because like it or not we are human and human beings are designed (or evolved) to operate in a particular manner. Our vision is our primary sense, each face is subtly unique and through that we are able to recognise and assess who we are talking to. We are the great communicators of the animal kingdom, but our communication is not just verbal, it is through facial expressions and bodily gestures. To remove any part of that communication is unnatural, and there are compelling psychological and social reasons why the withholding of a key aspect of our humanity makes us feel uncomfortable. Much play was made by the two traditionalists of what I suppose could be called harassment by men. Well tell them to get lost. Believe it not, anyway, the majority of men ARE capable of controlling their dicks, otherwise rape would be the norm. Oh, and if it is supposed that rape never happens in strict Islamic countries, think again. How would you even KNOW how many rapes there are, as the victim in those societies is highly unlikely to report it, as often she is considered to be just as guilty as the perpetrators, and her life is forever ruined. The whole thing reeks of not only a type of paranoia, but also a tacit admission that women are temptresses ready to subvert the godly man and therefore should be firmly controlled. I think I read one time that something like 80% of communication is non verbal, that's the issue with wearing a mask. Frankly, I find it awkward and creepy, and will likely avoid these people unconsciously. Really, Canada is becoming a bunch of countries within one, and I don't know how that will shape the future. Maybe it won't have much of an impact at all (like it hasn't so far), and we can maintain our economic union. Or maybe, one culture will at some point try to dominate the others. I'm not so sure that separation is a good thing (the niqab symbolizes segregation), and I suspect that multiculturalism has diverged from its original pipe dream. Just my opinion.

I myself wear hoods and scarves in cold weather - but anything covering any part of my face is removed before entering a bank, store, office, court, apartment building or hotel, or any place where security is a concern. For anyone to ignore security needs is foolish - or extremely selfish and self absorbed. Hiding from the world is everyone's right, as is engaging with it. There's nothing wrong with being shy or introverted, or scarred, or dealing with chemotherapy or naturally bald. Nor is the choice to conceal one's identity "more honorable" or more moral or in any way whatsoever better than any other choice of dress. She talked somewhere else about how we nowadays often communicate using only our voice, through telephone or internet. She seems to forget that for meetings that really matter, you would make an appointment face-to-face, whether it's with family and friends, for a job interview, or any other formal or informal occasion where showing who you are is of some importance.

Hijab is forced upon Muslim women by their Father, brother or husband, based on Sharia laws. At some point "old habits become hard to change" however, the issue of Muslim women wearing hijab/neqab in the West is simply to make statement. As if they are saying: "look at me I am the virtues".
