I got a good laugh when he says "We don't know what's going on at 121.5 MHz" well it just so happens that 121.5 MHz is the frequency used by the ELT or Emergency Locate Transmitter that is triggered when a plane crashes. That's one frequency you really want to stay away from unless you want the feds kicking in your door.

I can see the Pi being used to transmit a signal to block a frequency but I am really surprised you can transmit considering Pi only outputs a digital signal Initially I thought you were transmitting through the SDR but only models like HackRF one can do this. I will give this a try

In Germany even FM transmitters are illegal if they have a range above 2 meters. So, I wouldn't do something like that here.

U can also attach one of those radio broadcasters u use for wireless CD player to your car. Solder on to raspi with a signal booster and that's how I messed with my neighbor which was about 40 yards away.. couldn't get any further though...

The raspberry PI foundation, knowing the hardware function this is based on was used for an illegal use made sure to change enough of it so that in newer chips PIFM would no longer work, to protect naive users who did not realise that emitting a FM modulated square wave would also emit on its higher harmonics frequencies in the military and avionics bands, and not only on the FM band, and thus made the user vulnerable for arrest. So no, PIFM as is, will no longer work on later models of the PI !

Yes, but we don't have any guides on it yet and it depends on the model that is being attacked. A replay attack is much more common.

121Mhz is in the air craft band. air band is 108-136MHZ so you could be causing interference to aircraft communications or aircraft navigation aids.

If you boosted this signal to a very very very very high degree or were right next to the receiver, that might be true, but even with an optimal length cable, this has a range of about a block at maximum.

not always true. a weak signal can be radiated very well. if you take a transmitter that sends a 100mW signal into a horrible radiator and said system is at ground level it may only have a range of 100ft to 300ft maybe up to a 1/4 mile. take that same set up only have the radiator sitting up at 1,500 ft above ground level you could see a range of 15 miles or more. if you have a good radiator (1/4 wave vertical or a dipole (1/2 wave radiator)) the tiny 100mW signal will do much better in range. Several years ago I got to talk to a airline pilot on 2 meter ham band (146.52MHz actually) he was on a handheld radio with about 4 watts RF power and I was using a hand held radio as well with about 100mW of rf power (hand held radios tend to have crap antennas) he was at about 30,000 feet and about 100 miles away and had no issue talking to him for the moments he was in line of sight. So while at ground level it may not seem to have much range it could be in theory being picked up by aircraft cruising around at 30,000ft 50-150miles away
