I mean, Auras and stuff aside, Meditation *is* effective and can help improve focus, reduce stress, and even dull pain through something like a self-inflicted placebo. And to be clear, these are things that have actually been studied and have actual scientific evidence to them. But also its not like a Japanese show incorporating a prominent part of their spiritual and martial arts tradition is anymore misleading than garden variety magic.

I was really looking forward to Pomelo Retro’s take on this series. Did not disappoint. 💯 As a 90’s kid from the Philippines, Maskman has a special place in my heart as it was my gateway to Super Sentai, strongly followed by Fiveman, Jetman, and Turboranger. This show made me a fan of the heroes in multi-coloured spandex and giant combining robots. While it has been a good part of my childhood, i do agree that the series itself has a lot of holes… although it paved the way to the tropes now synonymous with the super sentai franchise (i.e.: 5-pc robot, sixth ranger). I quite liked the gendering of the suits using earrings - which they also did for Blue Dolphin of Liveman and Five Pink/Yellow of Fiveman. Personally, i wish they’d revisit this design… 😅 Trivia: Maskman was supposed to be Fiveman (hence 5-pc robot and the 5’s on the chest) before production decided to change the title card. Also, Yellow Mask is the best Maskman! 😁 So glad he used the Yellow Mask suit for his avatar for this video..!

Rewatching this video, I remembered why Prince/ss Igam was so hyper-fixated on defeating Red Mask - even going so far as to travel back in time to kill kid Takeru. 27:22 Takeru was the guy that made Princess Ial fall in love with him, making her side with the overground humans and betraying the Underground Tube Empire. This brought further shame to the Igam Family, now headed by Prince/ss Igam, after Emperor Zeba usurped the throne - making him/her look like a traitor by association just by being Ial’s brother/sister… Igam’s not completely bothered by the rest of the Maskmans because they were not a source of shame to their name… 😁

Why is having a superpower system based off a pseudoscience a bad thing? In the infinite multiverse of fiction anything is possible and often superpowers are used to define what a lot of people claim is real science. So if anything calling it a superpower just makes it all the less believable it could be a real science It’s like trying to explain why a lot of heroes can just absorb radiation and get cool powers

I have been a Super Sentai fan, since Saban's adaptation of stock footage they combined of their Americanized production of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which would soon bring me to the real thing later on, which I find even better than my last experience through my childhood. I have nearly finished the first eleven entries of that original franchise along with the five others from the 1990's, which is about nearly a total of 16 in my experience. I have an exciting feeling that my childhood dream of watching the forgotten Super Sentai shows is at it's peak just three more and it's finally complete.

Wow one of my favorite super sentai of all time. Zeba kills Igam's clan and took the kingdom and for what I remember Igam family has the power to defeat Zeba and what ever he wants to do. You just didn't explore the lore and backstory more or you just didn't like the series that is why you got lost. (imho)

I am someone who is a big fan of super sentai. While I'm not some who has seen every episode of every season, I've seen enough episodes and done enough wiki binges to formulate my own barebones opinion, at least when it comes to pre-Gokai seasons. However, I *love* watching these videos because I am always interested in other people's opinions and how their thoughts can shine new light on things i never thought about. And, while I will admit pronunciations occasionally irk me, as someone who is good a parroting words he hears, i completely understand everyone has their own brains. Breh, that was an awesome review! Saw the entirety of Maskman at the beginning of this year alongside Liveman and Jetman. Lately, though, I grew to love Gingaman as my all-time favorite, even toppling those 3 (must be the "Peter Pan meets Tarzan, Zelda, The Last of the Mohicans, Princess Mononoke, and G Gundam" vibe). Good review as someone who doesn't care for maskman and one of soda weakest sentai entries you hit the nail on the head, however there's one thing I disagree with. The aura power rant you give I'll be blunt was silly. The aura power is clearly based on chinese buddism/mysticism, I'm aware they're jokers who actually scam idiots into believing that's a thing in real life but I doubt soda and toei when making the series were trying to make maskman into an mystical kung fu propaganda for the masses, and if people actually thought so then that's on them and not the creators. By that logic dbz would be problematic since the characters use chi which is also something these kung fu scammers preach to their students as legit.

The aura bit complain is kinda silly, I get what you mean, but in a work of fiction you can literally take anything and make it so it actually exist within that universe, they could have call the super power "spirit", "energy", "ki", etc, and it would have been the same. I think they used aura to make it a bit more "unique" than the generic "energy" or "battle spirit", or like you said, because it was popular in the 80s. But saying you can't use a real world concept someone made up because it's used to scam people it's like saying you can't write characters with psychic abilities because there are people in real life posing as psychic to scam other people; and the same would go for fortune tellers, characters that evoke holy powers to heal people (the real counterpart in the world that is used to scam people would be faith healing), etc. Bottom line is that you can name your super power whatever you like, if a kid then becomes gullible enough to believe those things exist in real life, that's on them for lacking critical thinking skills.
