Hiking the Lost Palms Oasis Trail in Joshua Tree National Park is a unique experience. The trail is in the southern part of the park, which has more of a Sonoran Desert feel than the majority of hikes in the northern part of the park. You won’t see any Joshua Trees on the Lost Palms Oasis Trail, but you will see the park’s largest grove of California fan palm trees, tucked into a hidden canyon. There are no big climbs as you make your way over the ridges and washes through the desert. It’s a fun desert hike that’s worth your time.

Any chance you can include gps coordinates of the pictures you took for this hike? I see many people on KZbin getting lost on this hike and never making to oasis and turning around. It would be helpful to plot your pictures into Avenza maps.

Each guide on the website has a GPX file, which should give you all you need to make sure that you're on the trail and in the right spot. Adding lat/lon to every image would be a pretty heavy lift in terms of effort, of which a ton already goes into these guide.

Other (south) side of the park. There's an old gold mine here on the Mastodon Peak hike, pretty cool site.

Do you drive there early morning or stay at a hotel the night before

I've done both but this time I drove from Orange County, was about 3 hrs, left at 330am... but staying in a hotel is always better. Or even camping there at Cottonwood.

Is there seasonal or year round surface water there?

That's a good question. I believe there's always water there, but it's not always pooling above the surface.

The Oasis of Mara was burned by an arsonist several years ago, but to my knowledge this one has not been affected by fire

No, that one was Borrego Palm Canyon in Anza Borrego... sad it was really nice
