I have 2 Garmin watches: a Fenix 7S Pro Sapphire Solar, and a Venu 3. Currently I'm on the Venu 3 because I'm recovering from a total knee replacement so I'm not exactly hiking these days, and the Venu 3 is perfect for my current needs. I had chosen the S version of the Fenix because i have very small wrists and 47 mm is just too large so i went small, though at times i question my decision. I'm glad for your honesty about the Fenix 8 because i have read tons of reviews that agree with you. I am considering getting the medium 47 mm Fenix 7 (i need to try it for size) because I really could use a larger display, I'm not a fan of amoled displays in the outdoors and who doesn't like a longer battery life? However if it's too big I'm happy to keep my Fenix 7S. Because it works perfectly, does everything I needed, nothing i don't, looks fabulous in bright sunlight with good backlight in dim conditions, and frankly i think that with the Fenix 8, Garmin made the mistake of trying to please too many people, which brings the performance down as is often the case. They tried to combine the Fenix 7 Pro and the Epix. But then they released the Enduro 3 which basically is Fenix Pro 🤷🏻♀️ too bad the Enduro doesn't come in 45 mm, that would be my next choice. Not sure where Garmin is going with the Fenix 8 but it's not a direction I'm interested in pursuing.

Nice video! I use Overpass quite frequently but didn’t come to the idea searching for peaks close to a way. FYI: OSM has nodes, ways and relations as type of data. Ways are used for everything which is not a single point and therefore also for closed lines like buildings, lakes, areas, etc.

I just went a couple days ago. It seemed like the water was way higher when I went. Chest point at some levels and much more flow. I even fell once! lmao

Hi - your videos are amazing. I love how you show maps, and include information about practical things like parking and bathrooms. We are going to Santa Cruz and Joshua Tree and your videos have been very helpful. I have a question about Santa Cruz. We are doing a day trip, planning on hiking to Potato Harbor. Is it possible to link up with an interior trail and still get back to the ferry? Or should we just go straight back to the ferry. We are in our 60's, but move pretty quickly. Answer if you have a chance; no worries if you don't see this or have time to respond.

We carefully control access, including hunting, on our property in the Northern Rockies. There are times of year when vehicular access is not allowed off designated roads across all of our units and other times when access is granted to the public on many thousands of acres in partnership with a state agency. We have simple rules: No open fires; no off-road vehicular traffic; and, regrettably, no camping is permitted on our private land due to excessive seasonal impacts. Regarding hunting, certain wild ungulate species may be harvested by hunters holding the appropriate license and tag(s) and some may not. No furbearers or other predators may be trapped or shot. We have violators annually: camping within six feet of No Camping signage; fire pits created every year despite signage prohibiting this practice due to severe fire danger (including for the visitors…); cut fences, torn down gates, locks shot off; trespass on closed units, particularly during hunting season; driving off-road; and on and on. We are also seeing more wounded but abandoned animals during hunting season and plenty of trespass incidents which we will prosecute if we feel we have sufficient documentation. In addition to all of this, we see a sad and serious change in what constitutes “fair chase”. In the season just ended, a hunter in one of our units shot and killed a bull moose (legally under State regs but specifically prohibited under our rules) on our deeded land where 5 or 6 of the hunter’s friends, each equipped with onX, stood on different ridges on that unit, spotted the moose and remotely electronically directed the hunter to that location where the animal was shot and killed. This is not hunting. This is simply harvesting. I add that with all of the newcomers to the Intermountain West bringing a self-righteous sense of overweening entitlement to be able to do whatever they want, wherever they want, whenever they want, we are considering reducing or entirely eliminating access. Private land is private land. If you have a landowner that allows access, I suggest you respect the land, the wildlife on it, and the landowner’s rules.

Seems like Garmin has changed management and taken a new direction. I guess I'll keep my 7X until they find a way to screw it up. I heard a lot of bad things about their programming and other practices lately. Would not be surprised if they started selling our information to make more money.

The area by the river just past the parking lot is out of control. So many people just show up and act like they’re at their house bringing entire grills sometimes down that path to the river and leaving all their trash for the rest of us to see. Would be totally fine charging a small fee to enter the area to help with upkeep. I’d be even more fine with a larger fee to have someone onsite making sure people are acting a fool/leaving their garbage and to monitor the parking lot where break ins are known to occur.

The only daypack I own is the Outdoor Vitals Skyline Fastpack. It's a pretty cool pack, aimed at fastpackers, so it has front soft flasks and is designed for jogging.

Good for the Bridge to Nowhere people. It's not a $110 hiking fee but a jump fee. The hike is incidental/included. I'm glad they take pride in what is now a monument and want to keep it clean. When the area opens again, I'd pay $10 to hike it.

Restrictions are necessary on any activity that harms environment. I’ve traveled the world for 60 years, with your own eyes see the beauty of well maintained beauty and life of the planet. See areas with over population that once beautiful lakes, mountains, river’s no longer support the local population, or environment. Where I live, visitors park on pulloffs along the roads for the nights, throw their trash, waste, into the river. Water is for people, farmer’s, rancher’s, wildlife. Respect everybody, land, wildlife, or stayhome on social media. See the world on video’s. In life, leave it better than you found it.

It's not called Birdseye anymore but satellite is still there, buried in the map menus. Either way I'd go with the 67, the battery life is much better.

I have lived in LA for over 30 years now and I've done various hikes along the way but never bothered to do the Hollywood Sign. I'm older now and have a lung condition that prevents me from doing anything too strenuous which is a total bummer. I work with a lot of out of towners who ask me about the "hike to the Hollywood sign" and I always feel lacking because I have never done it. This video is exactly what I need to share with those looking to do this hike. Editing is spot on as it highlights the trail and the various sections very well. This is the best video of the hike that I have seen. It makes me want to try it even though I don't think I could make it all the way. I also like sharing your hiking guy website as it is very useful with all the maps. Thank you so much for doing this!!

Good evening Cris, I hope this finds you well. You mentioned previously that you were going to include the GPX file to 3-D printer mountain peak company and your news video. I don’t know if you meant the next one or this current one you released? I’m interested in the name of that company that does the mountain peak 3-D printing. Thank you kindly
@Hikingguy2 күн бұрын
I had a few issues with the process on the original company, but two other options: custom: gpxtruder.xyz - some prebuilt ones of popular hikes: www.3dadventureprinting.com

Went through 2 camelbaks. Older one was fine but the newer one leaked when I didn’t close the reservoir properly. The Osprey is much better simple to use, no leaking and the newer packs made securing them easier. No issues with bite valve breaking.

I think they should fence off the property line and usfs needs to reroute an additional public trail around the property. Land owner needs to post no trespassing sings. In my opinion if the land owner doesn't own the land from the trail head to the bridge then they should follow the no closure orders just like the rest of the public. Its there responsibility to iron out all these types of scenarios prior to purchasing land in the middle of a forest.

Private ownership laws gone mad. The lease / title laws need to be examined & changed. Public lands and their management are funded by everyone’s taxes and exist for everyone to enjoy. If local laws are being broken, go after the offending parties, not everyone else.
@thecarys563Күн бұрын
@@andrewwilson6091 hopefully this is the rationale for the parking fines. I'm in favor of enforcement against the bad actors and not fencing everyone out.

Private property or not, it's an established route through a flood control easement. They'd have a hard time prosecuting a trespassing charge...

Thanks Chris! Happy Holidays! The problem of access is becoming intractable, I'm afraid. Better access seems to be leading to more damage and disrespect as more people recreate outdoors (an unintended consequence of the pandemic), but charging higher fees means only privileged people will have access, who may be no better in terms of being good land stewards. We need better humans on this planet.

I'm 78 and used to hike over this bridge via the narrows and on up to iron and fish fork many times and a few times up to hwy 2 along prairie fork in my teens. There wasn't any trash to speak of on this hike then. Times have changed for the worse I'm afraid, as many things have in my opinion.

Your hiking news is always interesting. I am old enough to remember when you went for a hike with no electronics and just had to be careful and smart and take care of your own needs with a map and compass. Maybe that was better in some ways, because it meant that you had to know what you were doing. You made sure you could do land navigation, you had the right equipment, and you assumed there would be no rescue.
@bs44273 күн бұрын
Nobody is paying a $110 just to go on a local hike especially when its already difficult paying for groceries, gas, and other living necessities. Theres plenty of other hikes around that require no money. Bridge to nowhere will have zero foot traffic unless its the wealthy and it's also not that special of a place to be honest. Plenty of other place to dip your feet in the water for free. Reminds me of campgrounds in California that say you can camp but you can't have any open flame stoves or grills to cook with, which pretty much cancels out camping for most people unless you are rich with an RV or can afford a huge power bank and an electric griddle. It all just shows us how big the wealth gap here in Cali is going, which is the real problem. Fix the wealth gap, lift the poor up to middle class and people will start caring about their environment again. Its hard for the poor to care about graffiti, littering, etc when they are already living in squalor and feeling disenfranchised.
