The hike to Sandstone Peak, the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains at 3,111 feet, is a classic. If you simply want to get to the summit, slog up the steep and short trail to the peak. But I highly recommend taking this popular scenic loop via the Mishe Mokwa Trail instead. You’ll get to fully enjoy the beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains, including the iconic Balanced Rock, Echo Cliffs, Split Rock, and Tri-Peaks. Hiking up the Mishe Mokwa Trail also gives your legs a break; the longer loop is not as steep as the direct route.

Fun fact: the name, Mishe mokwa comes from my language, Anishinaabemowin - the indigenous language around Lake Superior. Spelt Mishi-makwa (Great Powerful Black Bear) nowadays, I have no clue how a language name from over here ended up over there in California. Otherwise, an excellent guide as usual!

Thanks for that, very interesting! I have a little bit about the history of the name and why it's there in the guide on the website. Basically Boy Scouts named it that from the Song of Hiawatha poem by Longfellow.

The old Circle X Ranch keeps on giving. A really delightful place. We used to camp there in scouts.

Best on a clear winter/spring day after some rain. I love to do this exact same loop... but time it to catch the sunset at Sandstone Peak. Headlamp on and watch your step on the descent.

It's a great hike. Thank you for posting. Is there a trail, from this hike, to get to boney mountain?

I did this today and I agree the highlight of this hike is the views from the tri peak. Only things I didn’t like are all the rocks on the trail and the elevation changes.

Hi Cris, I've noticed that for a number of your hikes you get there at or before sunrise while some official websites say lots don't open until 8am.. do you still park in these lots or do you have alternative parking recommendations for sunrise hikes?

I never break the rules and enter when a park is closed, but I do often show up at sunrise when I'm shooting a video (need the light). Generally federal lands like National Forests, etc. you can show up whenever, and I've found that many state and local parks are sunrise to sunset. Even at sunrise, you'll avoid crowds and often have the trail to yourself.

Do the hills and canyon views look this good all year? Wondering if I need to squeeze this in soon since spring is ending or if I can do it other times of year. Also how steep is the descent towards the end? My girlfriend only goes on certain hikes with me for some reason because if a hill is too steep her fear of heights kicks in because she thinks if she falls she will roll down the hill no matter how much I tell her that wouldnt happen if you fell 🤷‍♂️

It's best in spring / winter, and now is a good time to catch the end of it. And don't worry about the descent, it's not too bad, there are no crazy edges.
