This hike highlights the Book Cliffs; a unique desert landscape that stretches over 200 miles between Utah and Colorado. It is listed as the longest continuous escarpment (slope/cliff at the edge of a plateau) in the world. We spent a few hours in two sections that zig zagged across the Mesa and Garfield County lines. (Note: the hike was in late October, which is hunting season, hence the bright orange on everyone, including the dog's vest.)
The terrain is part of Colorado public lands, governed by the Bureau of Land Management. CO has over 8.3 million acres of public land managed by BLM, which is a bonus for explorers looking to get outside. The area we traversed was a rustic, untamed section with no defined trails.
Jellybean the boxer loves exploring the open spaces. After hiking, her paws are checked for cuts and cactus tines, and she enjoys a hot bath to clean off any potentially hazardous dirt or dust from the old mining sites. (Note: Bean chases lizards, similar to how she scampers after her feline sister. She's never caught or hurt one. She also sniffs bones that we find on our hikes but doesn't lick or chew them.)
