I typically only get blisters when I don't break in my shoes like I should have. My best on-trail treatment has always been putting a band-aid over the whole blister. Sometimes, a piece of duct tape is all I need if I don't have a big enough band-aid. Great video and great tips! What was your worst blister experience on the trail?

Hey Shawn! thank you for the watch and the comment! I super appreciate it. love the tape idea. Duct tape is a super fix all on trail. unfortunately the toe nail experience in the video was a real life scenario. One of the hikers in our backpacking group got ill and me and another guy took turns carrying that pack on our front side. Because of the extra weight and the lack of clipped nails I lost two nails. Super not fun but lesson learned. Appreciate you!

Surprised the two pairs of sock trick isn't mentioned. I was really sceptical, and usually don't get blisters but on a 170 mile hike in Scotland I got them four times! I stopped and did the tape and blisters when I felt hotspots, but it still kept happening - and yes I was wearing shoes I knew well, although they were new-ish so that didn't help, although I had trained for the hike partly in them and had worn them in the weeks running up to it on purpose....I switched to wearing two pairs of socks, the blisters stopped.

This is awesome and I appreciate the info! I’ve heard about it a couple times never tried it myself, but I’m definitely gonna be giving it a go now! Impressive results and can’t wait to try it

I love the trail goat. Brooks makes good trail shoes as well. Happy hiking!

Blisters just mean you're undertrained for the hike you're doing. If you train X miles every week at home then go on a X mile / week hike with the same shoes at close to the same elevation gain, won't ever happen.

Hey Dave! First, thanks for the comment, and your channel is amazing. I do agree with you that if you have put in the repetitions, it would be very difficult to have this sort of incident occur however there are many different factors that have the potential to pop up. I genuinely think you’re right and it’s a single greatest way to avoid it however, I have been surprised a couple times on long through hikes or ultramarathons while still having plenty of miles under my belt. Hope you have an awesome day, brother.

I was well trained for my Scottish hike, I had done 50 miles of hiking in a week in the same type of shoes and socks a training earlier in the year with 60-100% total pack weight (i.e I hiked with all my gear for many miles to check), and had done long -140 mile trip, a mix of wildcamping and day hikes, but all in the same 2 week period before with full gear a few months before. So 170 miles would be fine right? Especially as it was drier than those spring trips which were wet af and I didn't get blisters on. No, I still got blisters repeatedly. So it's not always training! Training just helps to weed out problems - but they can still happen. I then went on to do an over 100 mile hike continous, no day hiking shortly after, no issues. So maybe it was just damper up there, or having more hills, I dunno.
