Hiking an active volcano is now a highlight in our life. If you ever have the chance to experience the views and magic of a volcano at sunrise, you must do it. To make things even better, we hiked with a gang of naughty monkeys, just to remind us once more that we aren't in Kansas anymore 🐒🐒🐒. Hiking Mt Batur at sunrise was an experience we didn't completely expect out of Bali Indonesia.
We were awoken very early, 2:30am to be exact 😴, ate a quick breakfast and were then shuttled in vans to an unknown location We arrived in the dark and were handed hiking poles and head lamps. We began our assent, not knowing the physical task before us
As we trudged up the side of the mountain, we began hearing a sharp, crying sound. IT WAS A BABY PUPPY!! We couldn't believe our eyes as we stared at the tiny helpless animal in front of us. What we couldn't believe even more is how everyone else, tourist and local alike, had very little care for the poor little creature in front of us. Supposedly, we will never know for sure, the mommy dog was coming back (relieving the tourists enough to keep them moving 😉).
We continued working our way up and soon discovered that this would be a very hard activity. Huffing and puffing the whole way, we finally reached the summit! ⛰
We sat down on the edge of the hill and looked out to the sea. We welcomed the morning sun on its return to this side of the world and marveled at its beauty. The neighboring volcano in the background of this epic sunrise paired with rolling clouds in the foreground, made for the most picturesque moment ever. We truly weren't able to share the depth and colors that took place before us but we hope that you are still able to feel the magic of that moment as we said good morning to the day.
As we sat in that moment, we were given a hardy breakfast of bread and eggs, which were boiled in the heat of that very volcano. The water for our coffee, we later discovered, had been harvested from the volcano's steam and used for our morning coffee. Something that we will never take for granted again.
Not thinking this moment could get any better, we met the neighbors! 🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒
We were greeted by a troop of naughty monkeys who were ready for their morning breakfast from the tourists. We could not believe our eyes as we watched these little creatures tumble and run around our feet. This was the first time either of us had ever seen a monkey in the wild and we loved every second.
We spent the next 2 hours walking along the edge of the volcano's crater and looking out at the beautiful views. Our guide, Madee, was so wonderful and taught us many balinese sayings! We enjoyed a great conversation and hike as we made our decent.
This is truly one of the most incredible experiences we have ever had! Have you ever done something similar? Let us know in the comments below!!
