Great video! You seem ready. 😊 Taking dedicated sleeping clothes is so smart. It not only feels very nice to put on dry, warm clothes at night, but, in the event you get soaked during the day, and the temp drops, those dry sleep clothes could be a lifesaver. Very wise.

I have been admiring your sun hoody. I really like the color, and as far as I can tell weathered the trail well. Without getting into detail, did you go through a process where you weeded out some of the clothing items to save weight?

Monday, February 12th: Experience shows the closer a thru hiker approaches Mount Katahdin, the more clothing that is shed. In 2020, I started with 45 lbs. In 2023, I started with 35 lbs. In 2025, I am aiming for a total weight with food, water and clothing for about 30 lbs. We make our choices, we take our chances. Good luck to you! Happy Trails! Ross08

Looks like good gear for a winter start. I started with the same Altra mids. I liked the warmth and they did keep my feet dryer in snow. I switched to Speedgoat mids at Fontana Dam because my feet were so sore. I felt I needed more cushion. I switched to Speedgoat trail runners when the mids wore out. Still had foot pain even with more cushion, but it helped. I still have the Altra mids for day hikes. I used camp shoes off and on - croc knockoffs or cheap flip flops. It sucked to put on wet shoes to go to the privy. I did drop them in a hiker box when I got tired of carrying the weight, then missed them and picked up another cheap pair. By the time I got to Maine to where the water crossings are, I carried them for camp, but didn’t use them for water crossings. Had been walking through water most of the time on the trail because of all the rain so my feet were already usually wet.

Best wishes for you on your journey of expansion. I believe it’s more about what’s going on between your ears rather than how much is on your back. I’ll just bet you’re gonna do real well.

I use that AT buff for soooo many things. After the really cold weather, you can send the wool one home. I seriously only use the AT buff even in winter with a hat to keep my neck and ears warm while hiking on the southern part of the AT….and I’m one that has to have a warm neck and ears too! Best of luck!
