I remember Camp Crystal Lake from waaaaay back. I did my 6th grade camp there and the Friday the 13th movies were big at that time which was about 30-odd years ago. We joked about it, but it made the night hikes just a bit spookier. I totally get what you mean about hiking anxiety. Every hike I've done that's been above just casual, I couldn't get to sleep the night before. That and the fact that I always had to drive from LA/OC to the trailhead made those first couple miles a bit of a slog early in the morning. I'm looking forward to getting back on the trail. Thanks for blazing tthe trail out there for us.

I don't really ever have bad dreams before, but every once in a while I wake up with the wrong mindset to do a long hike in an area that I am uneasy. Sometimes I wake up feeling excited and invincible, and sometimes I feel apprehensive. I usually go with my gut and do a shorter hike in a place I feel better about when that happens. I hike alone 95% of the time, but if a place ever gives me an anxious vibe I'll see if I can enlist someone to tag along with me! It is strange that certain hikes can trigger a sixth sense, but not others.
@AliceFordAdventures
@AliceFordAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
I certainly agree. And since I often hike alone I tend to listen to those sixth senses most of the time too.

I've hiked a lot of places like that in California. This video got me missing it, so will need to plan another hike there soon. I lived and worked there many years ago. As far as the rattlesnakes (which I've had many close encounters with), I've known people in the foothills where I did a lot of construction work who would keep Siamese cats, which according to them, are pretty much on a "seek and destroy mission" when it comes to those snakes, or any snake for that matter.

I did this same route 2 years before you did. Except I went to the top of Mt. Islip too. There's a cool abandoned cabin on its peak, and you can see what's left of Crystal Lake from there. I camped in the campground for several nights. And one night, I heard a wolf chorus at around 9:30pm. Very cool.

Hi Alice I really like your videos. I have a question so I always hike alone and from the videos I think you do to. I also make the mistake of reading to much on social media about snakes, Mountain Lions etc I get so nervous to go because of it. Do you have any advice on how you get through the nerves of what you read and hiking alone. Thanks!
@AliceFordAdventures
@AliceFordAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Missy, Thanks so much for watching. I do hike alone most of the time. If you tend to be nervous I would say 1 try to stay off of social media before a hike, maybe stick to reading trail reviews on All Trails or hiking websites. I also recommend just being overly prepared. I don't wear headphones and am always listening to the sounds of nature just in case I hear a snake. Just be observant. If you are hiking in snake country it's also best to avoid hiking right after it rains as snakes come out to try and get warm on pavement and warm dirt. You can also bring a trekking pole to poke the bushes. I always listen to my instincts too, sometimes I turn around, sometimes I change morning of on which hike I am going to do. Sometimes I sing out loud or carry a rock when I am hiking through tall bushes when I can't see what's around me. If a specific hike scares you too much, skip it or do it with a friend. But i find that educating myself on animals and their habits really helps me alot.

I very much like your vids. Always interesting. However, being the malcontent that I am, I have a complaint, just the one, said complaint being, your vids are too short. Wish they were a whole lot longer. This one was so short wasn’t even winded at the end of it.

If you really want the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up, think about this: the black bear is NOT native to the Angeles National Forest area, it was brought into the area back in the 1930's. And EVERY place named Bear Canyon, Bear Creek, Bear Valley, Grizzly Flats, etc was named after the 2000lb+ California Coastal Grizzly that used to roam those mountains and (often) the STREETS of Los Angeles and surrounding communities, up until around 100 years ago. In fact, the last grizzly shot in Los Angeles was killed in 1916 in Sunland. The Grizzly's not our state animal for nothing. Nom nom nom.
