Wow, I didn't know there were big horn sheep in Los Angeles County...reason enough to hike to the mine. (although the chances of seeing them are probably minimal) I'd be interested in an episode featuring your top 5 hikes in other categories.

I saw them on Scout hikes when I was a youth. I have an unbelievable story about them, just past the Bridge to Nowhere where we were camped.

@@rh5563 Yep. Hike to bridge to nowhere around October-November and you will likely see some big horns.

@@yehman71 , My friend was 2 feet from an entire herd passing right in front of him. I observed this from 50 feet away. I led, as my friend Jeff and I traversed a small canyon, which had a small stream running through it. A loud rock fall sound was heard, as I turned around, I saw a ram standing right in front of my friend. This canyon was extremely narrow at this point, maybe 20 feet wide, with walls at about 85* (almost vertical). Now, no one moved or spoke, that ram that was within reach of Jeff. They just stared at each other. I could hear the big ram breathing hard. After a minute or so, which seemed like eternity, the ram leaped up the other side. 10 seconds later, the entire herd traced the ram’s hoof prints with my buddy and I not moving an inch. After it was all over, we ran at each other, laughing hysterically, knowing damn well that that ram could’ve ended both of our lives that day. I just recently visited Jeff and we relived that old story.

Let’s see… I think there’s plenty of mildly unusual hikes. Potato Chip Rock, Black Star Canyon, Skull Rock, Ortega Falls… and just searching “haunted hiking trails southern California” brings up a surprisingly long list.

If you do this hike this year in 2024, be VERY careful. It is easy to be swept down the stream because the water is rushing. Use hiking poles.

Re. #5: I'm almost positive the waterfall was used in the 1970s horror movie "The Incredible Melting Man." Just a short scene, showing a decapitated head rolling down the waterfall in slow motion. 😬
