Nestled in the beautiful Olympic National Park, Mount Storm King should be on your Washington hiking list. This is a challenging 5 mile out and back hike that offers the most incredible views. Be aware, that the trail is only maintained by the parks department up to a certain point, which is about 90-95% of the way to the very top. Past this point, expect the trail to become much more narrow with drop-offs on either side. Then you go up a very steep section that friendly hikers have added ropes to in order to help you. Up a quick scrabble, and then you’re done and can relax and enjoy the views. Make sure to bring plenty of water, shoes with good grip, gloves for the ropes, and food to enjoy at the top. With lots of breaks and slow hiking, we made it to the top in a little over 2 hours and back down in another 1 hour and 20 minutes.

You do in fact need either a National Park Pass or NW Forest Pass to park. Might get lucky and not caught but why risk it and forgo helping the park system.

Thanks for the video and honest feedback on this hike. You look like people with relatively the same fitness as my wife and I. However, we have kids. They hike with us usually. Do you think it’s still doable for them?

Glad you appreciated it! I think most of the trail would be doable for them, but the very end section may be too challenging.

So, going down the ropes, do you go repel style or facing forward?

Ford likes to go down facing forward and I do a mix of both styles, but mostly repel/ facing the mountain. I think it's best to do whatever feels most comfortable for you in the moment!
