Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States - finally!
Mt. Whitney is one of the most popular hikes in the U.S., which means not only is it one of the most beautiful places you'll ever see, it's also nearly impossible to snag a permit to hike it during peak season. Thankfully, the Mt. Whitney permit lottery is only required for part of the year, and during the off season, though permits are required, there is no quota. The greatest challenge of hiking Mt. Whitney in the off season is the weather - snow storms can make the trail icy, dangerous, and often impassable. Just our luck, an atmospheric river dumped multiple feet of snow on the Whitney range just a week before our hike. We prepared for the worst, brought all our winter hiking gear (including crampons), and were ready to turn around if conditions were too rough. Much to our surprise, we were greeted with warm weather, hard packed snow along the trail, and a Whitney summit with zero crowds!
#mtwhitney #hiking #winterhiking
DISCLAIMER: Mount Whitney is a potentially dangerous hike, especially in the off season. Do not attempt this hike without the proper experience, equipment, and emergency communication device. Know how to assess trail conditions, and be prepared to turn around at any time. As always, climb at your own risk.

Mt. Whitney is so beautiful, thank you for showing us! For someone who works an office, 9-5 job your weekly videos is a total escape. Your videos are what inspired me to try hiking for the first time last spring. I previously thought that hiking was something that was impossibly hard for me to do. I'm usually out of breath after walking up a hill! However, you guys look like you were always having so much fun and I wanted to try and experience it too. Funny enough, my first hike was also in the snow and I thought it was ridiculously hard. When I got to the top though I realized that I could do really hard things and the feeling was incredible. Thank you for inspiring this newbie hiker to try something that I thought I wouldn't be able to do!

Yes! You should definitely go back before the next storm! And seriously, thank you very much for trying to get up after that crazy snow. The only reason we made it up was all the brave people like you who forged the trail through fresh snow so we didn't have to post-hole the whole way. We've been in that situation you were in, with deep fresh snow with no footprints to follow, and it is incredibly grueling.You totally deserve to go back and have a nice worn-in trail to follow to the top this time! ❤️

@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely -- sometimes you just have to take the bucket into your own hands! Especially with these permit lottery hikes. We spent too long lamenting that we couldn't win permits rather than figuring out how to do these hikes in the offseason, when they're less crowded and can be equally beautiful. Of course it's often harder and more dangerous with snow, etc, but for us it's definitely worth that trade off!

Thank you so much, both for the compliment and for sharing your turn-around story. It's really important for people to know that turning around is okay, especially at high altitude. I generally don't have altitude issues, but at around 13,000 feet even I was really suffering on this one. If I hadn't had Adam and Advil to help me through it, I probably would have turned as well. ❤️ -- E

Located on the eastside of California's beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains sits Mt. Whitney at 14,505 feet. The trail starts at Whitney Portal, 13 miles west of the town of Lone Pine CA. The climb is about 22-24 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of over 6,100 feet. During the off season (11/2 - 4/30) you can attempt the climb without a quota permit but, you’ll still need a wilderness use permit. In this epic expedition we are accurately reminded that Adam & Elise are always in their most comfortable state when they’re climbing to the extreme and the journey back to civilization is like being forced back to earth after being acquainted with heaven. These two adventures have started early, real early. 3:00am and Adam & Elise are wide awake, dressed and ready to take the battle to the mountain. However, Mt. Whitney is no pushover, she’s intense, extremely dangerous, unpredictable and a physically demanding mountain. If you’re not extremely physically fit and don’t take her seriously, she will easily bring a climbers hopes & dreams crashing down to reality. Elise is one of those extremely physically fit athletes/climbers yet, at 11,000 she’s exhibiting the effects of altitude sickness. You can feel Elise’s pain the higher they climb, it comes across with a palpable reality. As intensely physical as climbing is, the sport also has a strong psychological component. Adam recognized Elise’s symptoms and he’s right at her side offering her comfort, lifting her spirits and helping her punch through the pain. As I watch them climb ever higher & higher, I can’t help but take in the expansive & picturesque views of the interior High Sierra’s and the trail’s precipitous exposure. The trail ends at the Smithsonian Institute Shelter on the summit of Mount Whitney. Adam & Elise have conquered the mountain and as Adam hangs his feet over an entirely vertical surface, I say, perhaps a bit too loudly, “will you please get off of there?”.

So my vow is not valid anymore. And now I would put my effort into Yosemite anyway. It blew me away in April the huge snow year could not touch April 2011. Buried by four feet storm. Switchbacks are awesome for photos. Stop turn around take pictures. Video. Look how tiny Wotan looks!!!!!!!! It is ginormous. From trailcrest. Wotan is like 12700 feet! That backside trail was buried. 2011. Gone one giant sheet of snow.

Thanks Carolyn! Adam has that same problem with altitude, and at about 10,000 feet also, but fortunately on this one we were able to go out a few days early and acclimate a little bit. We even did a whole other hike up to 11,000 feet a couple days before. We'll show that one next week, and you'll see Adam suffering more on that one that he did on Whitney because he wasn't acclimated yet.

You guys are such an inspiration and have been knocking it out of the park with your hikes lately! I met you recently on your way from Half Dome to Clouds Rest and you were so sweet to take a picture with me and chat about training and music and inspiring others, despite the long journey still ahead of you! This video hit me right in the feels. Elise's struggles are so relatable! I did Whitney this past summer - it was my third summit ever, first hike over 10K feet so needless to say it was a struggle. I got an asthma attack trying to keep up with my group but eventually gave up and continued my trek alone. I didn't think I was going to make it, I shed a few tears, I couldn't catch my breath, had to rest after every step above 13K and almost turned around due to the incoming storm... But made it with a few minutes to spend at the summit, the most precious minutes because of everything I went through to get there. I was denied the beautiful views because of the clouds engulfing Whitney, so I thoroughly enjoyed your video and the 360 views! Did you guys use the crampons? Sending you love, you're amazing!

Teddie you're amazing! We loved talking with you, and both of us find your attitude very inspiring -- it totally rejuvenated us on our hike up to Clouds Rest. Wow, what a story about your Whitney hike -- so impressed you were able to battle up to the top at that altitude! We carried our crampons the whole way up just in case, but were really lucky with conditions and never needed to put them on even once! Still, we were glad to have them just in case, because we never knew what conditions might be around the next corner. Please stay in touch -- we really want to see how your hiking career progresses! ❤️

I have been climbing 14ers since I was 18. Now at 52, I have climbed nearly 30 of them. I used to get horrible headaches at high altitude, before I discovered baby asprin. Thins the blood out so you can transport more oxygen. Never had problem again. Although now I bring a small bottle of oxygen and take a few hits up high and ALL altitude symptoms completely disappear. After 3-5 puffs, oxygen levels spike, breathing drops like a rock, and the legs comeback QUICKLY!!. I to have a youtube channel called Brads World wear I filmed eight 14ers after cancer in 2 years. Keep climbing and enjoy the moments. I have since retired from climbing now and I miss it very much. Time and the miles took their toll, and eventually you have to stop. So enjoy the ride while it lasts! :)

I've been on Whitney multiple times and I just love the switchbacks. I'm really glad you had good weather as you know it can get completely scary and miserable at times. It's really interesting to see that the snow is only just beginning - thanks for showing us that. The lake you are looking at from the summit is Iceberg Lake which is at approx 12,600' (on the Mountaineer's Route) so it's essentially a 2000' drop that you're dangling your toes over. If you wait till next year just before the permit season, you can do the hike again, but skip the switchbacks and go straight up the chute and glissade down. You will need ice axe and crampons and knowledge of how to use them, and you have to start further down the mountain because of snow on the road. Oh and pre-COVID I've been able to get overnight permits pretty easily by specifying a wide range of dates. And you now have to do the Mountaineer's Route anyway which is not a lottery, just highly limited. On the Mountaineer's Route you have a view of Whitney almost the whole time which is really special.
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Ellen! The switchbacks are so gorgeous on a clear day, and Iceberg Lake was amazing from straight up above. Are you sure about the Mountaineer's route not needing the lottery? We wanted to do it this summer but heard that we still needed a lottery permit for it. If we can do it with just a regular permit, we will def do it this coming summer. And of course a huge yes to the glissade! ❤️

@@LiveHardxLoveHard Mountaineer Route is Lone Pine North Fork in Inyo Wilderness Permit system. They have only 6 per day. And if you exit through Whitney Trail you still need the lottery. If you opt to exit through Mountaineer Route then you don't need to. Mountaineer Route can do as a day hike, thus no permit need. People use the Mtn Route for Whitney and Russell.

Thanks for bringing back to me a fond memory. Summer of 1969 while at MCAS El Toro I hitchhiked a friday afternoon to the Alabama Hills where I slept on ground with a US olive drab wool blanket. Saturday morning made it to Lone Pine then Trailhead. Back then there was no permit system or cost. By noon reached summit and experienced altitude sickness for first time. Yes I did throw up. I sat dizzy for a while taking deep breaths but only by taking water and hiking down some did the headache subside. Then the fun part came. There was a long snowfield leading down to a point of trail to save about an hours hike. It was slushy but slid on my backside . What a thrill that was. I remember the view of Sequoia Park at the Crest that made my heart leap within. What a wonderful mountain. Returned to base with a couple of hours to spare . Those were the days when you could hitchhike safely and really be free in nature. Happy trails.

Thanks so much, and glad you enjoyed the views! We were honestly super lucky -- apparently the weather had been terrible for several days before, but it was absolutely perfect for us. Truly unforgettable to be up there all alone like that. ❤️
