I was just on Half Dome Sep 17, 2024 (cables up). I got half way up and our guides asked me to come down because it was starting to snow some. Bummer. Super fun though. How often did you need to clip and unclip? (In other words how many tie downs are there?) The advantage of using a prussik knot is it self tightens on the cable so you can stop and rest whenever you like. Factoid. If you get there are 7am, there's no one around.
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 3 сағат бұрын
Oh my gosh Ellen, that is such bad luck about the snow! But better safe than sorry when it comes to slipping on HD. Why didn't the guides just belay you or set you up with a prussik though? If I was taking someone up and they were already half way I would just pull my emergency rope out and belay them the rest of the way up and down. Was it too big a group to do that for each person or something? Anyway, the first time we did it there were quite a few anchor points on the right side (as you're facing the rock on the way up), so we had to clip and unclip probably a dozen times. Maybe half as many anchors on the left side. Then on our subsequent trip they had removed a couple of anchor points on the right side, creating at least one steep section with a very long runout (there were already two such sections on the left side). For anyone who's not sure about their endurance/ability to hold onto the cable securely, this would be a good argument for prussiks because a slip and slide in the wrong place could mean a long skid down the rock before hitting an anchor point. --A

You look great, girl, but you are not dressed properly for climbing! Sorry, but I would not climb half-naked on a Via Ferrata. I would always wear long climbing pants, just in case of slippage and a fall! We have climbed a few Via Ferrate in the Dolomites, and I would not want to skin my knees, shins or thighs on the rocks. Weirdly, it is mostly the American tourists who think they are in the heat of the American Southwest, or Death Valley...
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 12 сағат бұрын
It sounds like the long climbing pants are perfect for your needs, Gaby. We have done SO many via ferratas, including many of the hardest ones in the world, and never once had a slip or a fall so I'm honestly not too worried about that. Many of my favorite female rock climbers wear the exact same gear that I do, and I feel super mobile and comfortable in it so it's definitely the right choice for me. But everyone is unique, and props to you for knowing what works for you and going with it! --E

It's absolutely stunning, and what an adventure!! So, I owe you a report on my Skyline 30 fastpack. I mentioned before I was getting. First, sorry it has taken a while to report on this. The work schedule and heat (gotta love the Vegas heat) have made it difficult to test the pack. First thing first, with the vest harness of the pack and dual chest straps along with optional(can be removed) waist strap, this pack hugs the body with very minimal movement while you run or hike. Secondly, and this is for Adam, there is nice stash pockets on the harness for optimal snacks (pop tart) storage along with gels and other goodies you may want or need. Next up the size. At 30L plus a nice outside stretch pocket, you can store everything you can pretty much desire. **Note #1** This pack will make it difficult to carry a food canister inside for the Sierras where one is needed. However, with that being said, there is a nice Y strap for a small bear canister if you absolutely must need a bear canister. This pack is definitely worthy of a max 2 to 3 day adventure carrying ultralight necessities. The Skyline 30 does come with 2 hydraflax bottles. Also, the capacity of carrying a water bladder internally with port if needed. I have yet to use it overnight on trail, but will soon test it out in my local mountains now that the weather has turned for the better here in the dessert climate. I have used it so far for training walks around my neighborhood 3 times for a nice 8 mile loop I do for just putting in walking miles. If I forgot to mention, the Skyline 30L is made by Outdoor Vitals if you are interested in a look. I see you both may be using something like this on a possible 1 to 2 night adventure out in the backcountry. Thank you for your sharing your adventures. Mark

Wow, you guys are in godly shape. I just did wheeler peak today and I couldn’t make it to the summit. I was shy by about 750 feet but I feel like I made the right choice because I started getting really dizzy and nauseated. there were some poor choices made that I will have to reevaluate. Took too many things in my backpack and didn’t carry quite enough water. There was multiple points when I was about 1500 feet or so from the summit where I started feeling like absolute shit. I got really nauseated and I couldn’t look down the hill because I would get real dizzy. Multiple times I thought to myself am I gonna have to call someone for help way up on this mountain? Of course that’s not an option so I had to walk my ass back down and that was probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever dealt with in my life.. I think I’ve come to the realization that mountain climbing may not really be for me.
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 19 сағат бұрын
Good for you for turning around when you started to feel bad! Wheeler Peak is really high at over 13,000, and that's not an altitude to fool around with. Don't give up on mountain climbing yet, though! You might try acclimating at a high altitude (somewhere like Aspen CO is about 8000 feet) for a few weeks before you try it again, and see how that feels. I have a lot of trouble with altitude when I'm coming from lower down, but when I acclimate for a few weeks I can crush 14ers so hopefully it will be the same for you! --A

Yes sure! We flew into Venice and rented a car, and then it's really just a couple of hours drive north into the Dolomites. We stayed in a bed and breakfast hotel in Ortisei, which we absolutely loved and think is the most charming of all the little towns there. But of course there are lots of cute towns with lots of bed and breakfasts to choose from. But we do recommend the bed and breakfast type places. They are so cute, and the food is always delicious! ❤️

ELISE and ADAM a hello from France. Superb hike in unreal gorges probably dug by the druids to offer a peaceful bed to the sometimes turbulent river. It's not as easy as you seem to show, and behind your amused laughter accompanied by ELISE's voice and music, we see the concentration that sometimes appears on ELISE's face. At the exit of the gorges, like a mirage placed on a thimble, the elegance of a church welcomes you. Magnificent ! Kisses to you both. Magnifique ! Bises à vous deux. DAN

Awesome! And interesting that you say it could be a good "beginner" via ferrata. I wouldn't say it exactly looks easy but I could see that it didn't seem to demand the same kind of strength and stamina and technique that I've seen in your videos from, for example, the Dolomites.
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 20 сағат бұрын
Yes Catherine! If you are interested in starting out with via ferrata this would be a great one to start with, because there wasn't too much vertical climbing and there were almost no overhangs, which are definitely the most challenging sections in via ferratas. There are some great starter routes in the Dolomites too, but as you say also some really challenging ones. If you wanted to start out with a Dolomites one then Piccolo Cir would be a good choice -- so beautiful, but not too long or difficult. ❤️
